Final Fantasy XV (was Versus XIII)

I feel deeply sorry for Alex's fate, yet I can't help but taste the comical side of it. It's like something out of a sketch or a sitcom where the main character is hopelessly left out of the loop of enjoying the popular thing. This shit simply shouldn't happen.

It sucks that you don't have the game yet, but that is one of my favourite reaction gifs from one of my favourite films, and you wouldn't have used it otherwise, so it's not all bad... ;)

Yet another reason why I know we'd get along if we met face to face  .

Oh you guys. Even I can see the fun aspect to this! I'm starting to enjoy it a little bit, even. It's just too darn silly!

Good lord, the music playing in Duscae is gorgeous. That track starting with the Japanese-sounding flutes and the guitar kicking in and such.

I also wonder if FFXV is enjoyed more by watching "Kingsglaive" after playing the game. Hopefully there will be some of us here who play the game first and can weigh in on what they get out of seeing things unfold in the opposite order.

For some reason, I decided to do exactly this. I haven't seen the film, but have it as part of the Deluxe Edition, so will check it out after the game.

So yeah, can weigh in on that account at some point.

I can't promise anything, but I can do that. i haven't seen Kingsglaive yet, either. I'll keep you posted, if you want. :geek:

Well, I didn't pre-order it like the majority of you seemed to have, but I walked to GameStop last night and they gave me the Day One edition, so that's neat.

Only took eleventybillion hours to download the update, BUT THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING

Alex, I hate to sound harsh, but it might be in your best interest to go full digital like I did.

Get a TeraByte PS4 (or hard drive from Pro or something), then just swear off physical games completely.

I download ALLLLLLL my games via PSN Store through my WiFi, and I linked a PayPal account up to it.

The only wait times are for Pre-Orders and most of those come with Demos you can easily uninstall later on. And PS4 can download stuff while you're sleeping too.

I don't own a single disc. It's all in my Library and Account.

^The issue with digital (for me personally) is that it's about 30% more expensive to buy a new game on release day.

Not harsh at all! It's a very sound piece of advice.

There's what Lex said, and then the little unimportant fact I already own a PS4 and replacing it would not come too cheap  . I'm quite happy with Steam, I'll admit, even if I'm not using it too much.

To be honest with you all this is literally the first time I've had something like that happen to me. Admittedly, I usually pre-order at the local store and just pick it up on release day. Never crossed my mind that Square might screw me over this royally.

You see what I did there? Royally. Hehe. I'll reclaim my throne.

Well, the idea of pre-ordering is that you get it on release day. Square's shop didn't deliver, 3rd parties did. I'd say cancel your order (if possible) and make hard complaints and shit.

Double Growth
Just reached Chapter 5, 17 hours in. I dunno guys, I'm really liking it. The combat's still fun: the better you get at parrying, the more fun it gets, also, some of the situational team-up moves are thoroughly enjoyable.
If you're near Ignis, he'll give you his spear (which is his alternate weapon), and Noctis will attack with both of them. With Gladio, Noctis will get on the flat of his blade and he launches you into the air to basically do a dragoon Jump. Very cool
The dungeons are phenomenal, probably the best Final Fantasy has ever done. And the bros are actually becoming...quite likable. I never had any interest in them in any of the promotional material, but they've kinda grown on me.

I've really only encountered one "set-piece," so far, but it was a lot of fun.

I even kinda like the fishing.

Once you get the hang of fishing, it's like Free AP/Items/EXP/Food for days *Hint: reel in when the wire tension and fish line arrows have disappeared*

Granted, I planned on going Full Digital well in advance, so yes it's a tad more expensive, but I saved up and the payoff is well worth it, especially Flash sales and Bonus points for big purchases.

Warning, huge story spoilers, do not click.

what the shitting shitballs

Before I get into it, the Leviathan fight was absolutely spectacular and will probably exist in my mind as one of my favourite moments in gaming forever. As a player it was just phenomenal.

OK so that one spoiler turned out to be true. I have a couple of things to say:

- Luna was by and large, shit. But since I'm not one of the people whose enjoyment of the game rested on Luna being a good character (because my hopes of that died with Kingsglaive anyway), I'm not really bothered by it. In fact, she did end up being a mite more impressive in the game what with the whole standing up to Leviathan thing. I don't dislike her, I mean how could you. It's impossible to dislike Luna like it's impossible to dislike glass. It's just there, it serves a purpose and there's very little to it.

- Her death would have had more impact if she wasn't just a plot device, which she is. She is literally just an object of the plot :/. She has zero personality. Unless "pious" counts. I mean I get it, that's who she is in the end. She knows her purpose and is fully committed, which is respectable in its own way. But what the game is doing is trying to make us feel through Noctis, and all we really have of Luna is his expectations/ childhood memories/ fantasies of her. We don't actually know Luna or who she is, so her death - while shocking to the unspoiled for sure (and even to the spoiled tbf) - lacks impact in the same way that say, Aerith or even Galuf did. I feel like it'll have an impact on people who are "plot-lite", or don't analyse as much as we do. People will care (just not us, much XD).

- I at least felt very slight emotion. I mean I was shocked. Very shocked. Carlie got the live reaction (though she doesn't yet know what I was actually reacting to, she just heard a lot of "WHAT THE FUCK", "WHAT THE SHITTING SHIT", "OH MY GAWD" etc).

- People are probably going to hate on Gladio for attacking Noct at the beginning of Chapter 10, but I don't think that would be deserved. At this point it's "several weeks later" and the three friends are also servants and loyal to Lucis, and this person in pain is supposed to be their King and he really needs to get his shit together.

- Perhaps surprisingly, I have no issues with Luna dying. I think the overall imagery, how it was handled etc. was quite well done? It lacked impact because Luna is all but a non-person. My issue at this point is a lack of understanding of Ardyn's motivations for killing her. I'm going to assume that this does get explained in some way moving forward. Do not spoil me either way.

Now I'm just incredibly excited to see what happens moving forward.

Well, gosh. I've only reached chapter 3 at this point, because I keep running around to do hunts. At least I have chocobos now.

...I get the feeling I'm not leveling up enough. The boss fight at chapter two was brutal, and I was around level 15 then. :< I'm level 17 now, and I'm still kinda struggling with hunts around level 12. Guh.

The sidequest listing has a recommended level listed, but I typically aim for twice that to be safe.

Also getting your Ascension up to a point where AP hunting is a thing, is a good idea too.

I also recommend NOT skipping long rides as you get AP for the trip. Not sure if you get anything when you skip.

Oh and worth noting there's a shortcut menu in the map that lets you warp to the last rest area you were at, or where the car is. You can't use it for caves and dungeons, but it's handy for world map quests when you're in a pinch.

I think you need to have the AP skill for car rides in order to get said AP for car rides though. (I have that though.) (Also having Ignis driving for me during long car rides gives me a chance to dash off into the kitchen and get a drink of water)

The other day, my friend gave me a tip and told me I should be holding down O to attack, instead of tapping. It actually works, when you're trying to string together a long combo. The only downside, is that you gotta wait until Noctis finishes his attack animation to do anything else. I think my biggest issue is that I'm too used to tapping buttons to attack/block and parry when I should be holding them down.

I'm inclined to believe that either levels don't matter (you can sometimes kill shit ten levels higher than you), or there's some kind of autoscaling going on (so the HP and shit of monsters in a lvl 12 hunt is adjusted to your current level). I'm not really feeling a strong link between stats and how well you're doing, but, maybe I'm not paying attention.

Combat (holding circle etc) is... well idk yet. On the one hand it tries to feel like a real-time thing, like an action rpg thing. On the other, I don't really feel like I'm in control of my character. On the one side it's fast, on the other you can't really do anything when you're committed to an action (esp. with large weapons). And since the camera is usually quite far away and everything jumps around a lot, keeping track of what is actually going on is difficult at the best of times. Think camera clipping into monsters a lot and shit, as well as your character seemingly randomly switching between targets. The lock-on mode should be 'set' instead of having to hold the button down (unless I'm missing something) IMO.

Maybe wait mode is better / different. If I can be arsed, I'd do a replay with Japanese VA's and wait mode. Speaking of, the cutscenes and whatnot seem aimed at the Japanese VA's, I'm really getting the impression that the English voices take longer to express the same thing, and that often gets cut off or overflows to either a next sentence (so the characters talk through each other) or scene.

Anyway, chapter 4 now (I think), story's picking up. They should've seriously considered adding more story at the start, instead of basically dropping you off in a desert with little to no background.

^Oh levels matter. I'm nearly level 60 and it makes a tremendous difference with progression. The only thing I'd say is that certain enemies are just tougher than others, level be damned. You'd expect a Catoblepas and Behemoth at the same level to pose a similar threat, but the Catoblepas is a more challenging fight IMO.

EDIT:
Oh no Ignis is really blind lol. Like the game is dealing with it well by giving me into trouble for walking too fast. Poor Ignis QQ

I thought of that. But being paid and on its way (supposedly), I honestly think it'd be more trouble than it's worth, cancelling and getting the money back.

I'm just hoping I'll have it by tomorrow... :'(

Thanks for the warning, Lex. I absolutely do not want to spoil myself!! In fact, thanks to you all because I'm able to avoid story spoilers and all that. Great stuff! :D

I just got to Duscae yesterday while playing. Omggggg this is so much fun <3 I spent 10 hours in the first area alone before I wanted to progress the story. :awesome: And Duscae is so pretty I can't even :reptar: I'm gonna be spending a shitload of time here, I'm sure...

A couple notes,
I really like the four guys, Prompto and Noctis being my favorites. I remember them saying you would care about the characters but I was curious to see how they'd 'do' the characters and their relationships, since they start off really close. So far they've done a great job imo. I care about them and love their interactions.

The combat system is awesome. I really love it. It's quite simplistic to operate yet looks so beautiful and satisfying. Definitely pleased.

For the story, it seems good so far. However my only con so far is that they really don't give you much at all at the very beginning. I would've liked to have seen another 5 minutes of cutscenes with the four or Regis before the game started, or something to give game-only players more to go on. You really get dropped in blank slate and not much is explained.
Even now I feel like there's a lot of history I'm in the dark about (it took Cor to explain that all the tanks and shit in the first area were from Lucis and Nifleheim battling years ago).

Now, I definitely enjoy the 'getting right into the gameplay' that happened so soon, and I also love the wide open area. You could either explore for ten hours or spend a couple advancing the story. I like options.

I feel like they did a lot of it right, but the downpoint is there's a bit tooooo little info/story in the beginning cutscenes. (Much more than FFV though, where you start off with a chocobo, find people by a meteor, and become friends then go on a journey :wacky:) If they just added more info on the situation, it would've been great. Could've been a voice-over of Regis talking about the current events while viewing certain game locations you get to visit or something; anything would've helped. :monster:

Otherwise? It's a great game so far. Honestly if you don't play the game and just watch all the cutscenes online (why would you even do that :wacky:) you're missing out/have missed out on so much fun and experience.

As for my current progress, I just finished Deadeye's hunt, gonna ride me some chocobo today. :awesome:

I summoned Titan! Shame it was night, so I didnt get the best look, but it was pretty sweet. I love the summons in this, they feel so damn powerful
