Good things about DoC

ForceStealer

Double Growth
Well, most of the games characters in uniforms already established so I guess they couldn't do too much about that. But they even greatly simplified Genesis' outfit.

@Masamune: I understand the misgivings on Tifa's much skimpier cowgirl outfit. But I'd hardly call the SOLDIER emblem change "completely out of touch with the original FFVII."

Ok, I know this thread is all kinds of old, but I did just spend an enjoyable portion of my evening going through it. I did enjoy DoC when I played it, which was about 3 years ago now. I guess I didn't really expect it to blow my mind (I'd been told about it and borrowed it from Force), so I was able to enjoy it for what it was. I had a lot of fun with it. I really want to play it again now, actually, partially because this thread reminded me of the things I did like about it (such as the simple yet fun gameplay and the soundtrack) but also because there are parts of the story that are mentioned here that I barely remember and would like to revisit.

Just wait around for us to do an LP of it if you desperately need to see it.

The worst thing about DoC is that it has so many good ideas that nothing was done with or were taken in the absolute worst directions.

I just wish they'd stop it with the amount of supah special pplz Shinra was experimenting with. One is believable. An entire football team is pushing it.

Well, at least that would be an explanation. Shinra FC. :awesome:

Although I didn't love it, it's really not that bad to play. I want them to release it on PSN (just as a ps2 "classic", not a HD remake) so I can play it again because I've forgotten a great deal of the story and it's the "latest" in FFVII canon world.

Crisis Core did a much better job of imagining the world of FFVII stylistically (ESPECIALLY Midgar, very well done IMO), but there are a few golden moments in DoC I enjoyed. The Shinra Mansion was exactly as I had imagined it from VII - not the basement though. How the hell did it get so huge?

I just remember coming out of the basement and into the mansion and instantly recognising where I was. I enjoyed that.

IIRC, the level actually starts in a sewer and then moves through some catacombs before you get to the actual basement. I assumed Deepground dug their way in.

So I'm starting a play through of this tonight with Force (it'll be my second time playing it, but the first time was years ago now and I barely remember anything about it tbh) as the wrap-up to our Compilation Epic Adventure Timez. Ngl, I'm kind of excited...

I wish I could play it again. I'm pretty sure my PS2 would cause me problems if I tried to use it though. And I can't get it to run properly on PS2Emu.

I'm sure they'll release it on PSN at some point.

When your only defence for something is "It's not that bad...", you know you're scraping the very bottom of the barrel. No wonder Squenix whack out this third-rate garbage when people have ready-made excuses for it. Dirge of Cerberus was a terrible game, right down to its clunky-ass controls, shoddy camera work, repetitive gameplay and bland level design. Even its "story" (which I think is being mighty generous) couldn't save it, in fact it's difficult to decide which was the greater screw-up of the two.

Let's also not forget the stunning cinematics are also a fat middle finger to the player: 'See all this badass shit Vincent can do? Make the most of it 'cause you'll never get to do it. Heck, you'll be lucky to clear that cardboard box over there!'

Well you know, you usually have hope for your favorites that they'll get better and then learn from their mistakes.

I mean, yeah. You're...sadly right. But when I still had hope I thought it was just a bump in the road towards better quality or whatever. An experiment.

...Didn't expect it'd be the new par for course.

It's interesting how little Vincent engages with the bosses. Most game protagonists make threats, invoke the power of friendship, or talk about how much they hate the guys or the horrible things they've done. Vince doesn't care who these people are or what they want. He just kills them when they're done talking. In the first four chapters, the only thing he says to a Tsviet is 'Protomateria?' The boss he engages with most is Hojo, and that's only to tell him to shut up.

I always got the impression that the DGS thought they were much more dangerous than they actually were. And I liked that atmosphere.

The game overall was not too bad (i would only give it a 4 out of 10 on a really good day) but overall dont u guys think it in general suffered from being the FF7 follow up we all wanted to happen (as in we all wanted a another ff7 after finish 7) but then was nothing like what we were hoping for and now pretty much everyone has it in for the game?.

random view on the general hate towards this game lol

Dirge was just a badly designed game in its original Japanese release, regardless of following up FFVII. Even with the adjustments made in the international release, it's still mediocre at best.

Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the hell out of it. But it's a badly designed game on many levels.

Let me dash some rumors: I finished DoC. But I'm glad I was thought of. :monster:

Obviously the best part of DoC was the excessive VinLu. And the fact that we very nearly get a confession of love from Lucrecia. And the worst part was pretty much everything about the way Hojo was represented.
