also generally I go with either grass or water, depending how how early you can get a good grass or water type. usually you can get a decent fire pokemon later and the games seem to have been generally set up to make fire starters difficult

Fire starters were harder in the beginning but better in late game in early versions. New dual type fire starters have changed that.

Also, Grass starters are almost always better. Except Chikorita. Fuck Chikorita.

Bulbasaur/Squirtle (because, I mean, c'mon...IT'S SQUIRTLE) -> Cyndaquil -> didn't play RSE -> Turtwig

Although the fourth generation starters all turn into some pretty wild shit. ALL of them are really, REALLY good.

Oh my god I remember in Pokemon Red/Blue if you trained Charmander too fast he'd fall asleep on you in battle, that bastard. I'm not sure if the others did it as well, but I remember him being the most likely to flip you off in a fight.
