- Age Cid up to about 40 or at least late 30's.

- Make the optional basement scene from the original an actual part of the main story. The fact that it was optional actually baffles me. (The Zack and Cloud escape from Hojo.)

- More dialogue for Vincent.

1. Why, what age is he now??
2. This is actually, I've found, a surprisingly 'controversial' suggestion--it comes up a lot, and certainly players who miss it are missing a significant chunk of the story, that's not really debatable in and of itself. BUT, there is something to be said (imo) for making players dig a little, explore a little, etc etc to receive all of the info. Especially cos, returning to that basement once you've seen Cloud's actual past almost seems like it should be instinctive...the key word, of course, being almost.
3. On one hand I agree, on another I feel like they could risk losing a bit of his nature if they make him too verbose...I guess I'd slightly modify this to be: Have Vincent's dialogue be stronger in terms of defining him and his characterization, as I feel like they were a bit sloppy with his portrayal in the OG.

1. Cid is apparently like...32 in FFVII. Just strikes me as too young...

2. Interesting point...but it feels like such an essential part of the story that making it optional seems strange.

3. I hadn't considered this, but you make a good point. I agree.

Ahhh, okay, for some reason I had assumed Cid was already older...so yeah, I agree, make him a bit more grizzled, which is already implied. They'll need to work out the years/time/etc w/ him supposed to have been the 'Young Hotshot Pilot' during the initial failed launch, but that's not a big deal. On the Cloud/Zack flashback topic...regardless of my feelings about 'optional/dig-for-it' story stuff (and your point about how central to the plot it is to be OPTIONAL really can't be overstated in a way), I fully, fully expect that it will be an unavoidable part of the narrative...most likely, it will be worked into the "Cloud's Subconscious" sequence, which if I'm not mistaken, was where it was originally placed in earlier plans for the OG's script.

Actually, on a side note...damn, I hadn't thought about how fucking disturbing/nightmarish the whole "Cloud's Subconscious" 'level' is going to be with 2019 graphics...I used to rush through that part due to heebie jeebies on the damn PS1, sooooo....

Yeah, there are a lot of disturbing and nightmarish scenes in FFVII, haha. The bit with Cloud in the Temple of the Ancients, where he starts flashing and stuff, the Nibelheim Mansion bit, etc. It's not just the writing, but the music (or lack of it) and the direction is often terrific. Even small scenes like just after you sleep at Junon and you get the black screen with that inner conversation...really creepy. There's also downright upsetting parts, of course. The flashback to Aeris' childhood is crushing.

Oooh, I actually love those little early on, text-on-black, "Been a long time since you slept in a bed like this..." and all that jazz. Some of 'em are creepy, others I feel like just had that kinda...'mysterious' vibe, you know? And yeah, they are freakin' brilliant with use of music, apart from the songs themselves...the sudden drop outs, or the moments where you get just the 'heartbeat pulse' of Sephiroth's theme song, but the rest hasn't kicked in....yet...but you know it's coming...

I actually remember feeling such a peculiar mix of emotions finding those Aeris/Ifalna/Gast tapes, and thinking that was part of why that bit is so brilliant. Actually, that's another example of plot moments that are TECHNICALLY optional...you're not obligated to play those tapes, by any means, and could easily just walk on by w/o ever even knowing they are there. Also, on a side note, liked how Gast, who has kind of been this important-but-fringe character in terms of the narrative, suddenly returns to a position of importance as Aeris' dadd-ayyy

Those tapes are seriously sad. I could actually understand leaving them optional -- they're significant, but not essential to the narrative, so it could work. If the standard of direction is as good in the remake, there are going to be a lot of really scary, disturbing and upsetting scenes.

The fact that I am Cid’s age is really not good. For heaven’s sakes, I’m a smoker, and as cynical as the rest... but to be like Cid? At 32?? You’re trying to tell me he is 3 years younger than Barret?? The dude is clearly somewhere between 42-60. Either that or I’m doing really well for my age.

So to answer your question, my totally ridiculous wish is that we get varied dialogue based on who's in our party and who's not. So let's say while traveling from Fort Condor to Junon, the player party is Cloud-Tifa-Red XIII and the extras are Yuffie-Barret-Aerith. While you're out in the field, your party banters based on who you have with you.
Such things were done to a great effect in Bioware's Dragon Age series. All pairs of party members had unique banter between each other, and you had to travel by foot a lot to hear all they had to say.

His age, Reeve's age, and the timeline as a whole needs to be rejiggered a bit.

Come on, everybody knows people age differently. Some age harder than others. I've most certainly seen folks who were in their late 20s and looked hard and grizzled as if in their mid-40s. Life and all sorts of stuff can make you look far older than you are.

Cid's just a hard muthafucka.

Yeah, I'm thinking like the battle model. The low-res model and concept art may be a little too red for continuity's sake (damn if it isn't striking against the white though) now that he has been completely blonde for so many years. His hair has ranged from neutral blonde in auxillary games to greenish blonde in AC (literally the opposite of red, though that may have been due to the cool palette of the movie) so I feel the strawberry blonde OG battle model would be the best compromise within the compilation. I also feel like it would further distinguish him from his half brothers, who look almost exactly like him.

It would be interesting to have a little backstory on her, but passing a portrait would definitely be a great noncommittal way to at least show that she existed beyond 3 words in Case of Shinra. The little world building things go a long way.

A part of me wants them to retain the wonky translations.

"This guy are sick."

"Attack while it's [sic] tail's up! It's gonna counter attack with its laser!" From the trailer, looks like they already fixed this. I got scorched because of this line (Nice breaking it, hero. *looks at Cloud*) so I kinda want new players to experience it as well as a sort of petty revenge.

"Beacause you are... a puppet." Perhaps the only Jenova line in the game, and it includes a typo. Just further proves she's an alien.

"Phoenix Down" I kinda like it because it sounds like a phoenix just got knocked down or something.

There were a lot of questionable translations in the OG that I've grown to be very fond of, but these are at the top of my mind right now (can't be arsed to remember the rest). They're gonna fix these in the remake, I'm sure, but a man can dream. And of course, I always loved Cloud's "let's mosey."

Since they will likely stick with three person battles only, and since they walk a bit ahead or a bit behind you, I want in universe justification about what the other characters are doing (as in, they are elsewhere, so as to justify why they aren't helping you fight). Hell, since they are cribbing a lot from a lot of the final fantasy mainline games in between 7 and 7R, they should do ATEs like 9.

For example, going to Kalm from the Midgar outskirts. Takes two seconds in the original game, but for a variety of reasons could take longer this time. Depending on who the two person team is, you could have awesome scenes:

Barret and Red: Comedy (TFS maaaay have corrupted me here).
Tifa and Aerith: Getting to know each other and establish their own close friendship.
Aerith and Red: Discussing how weird Hojo is and getting to know each other fresh.
Barret and Aerith: Talking about Marlene and Barret finally getting to say thanks.
Barret and Tifa: Discussing the future of the resistance, Cloud's leadership, recruitment opportunities...
Tifa and Red: ....no clue about this one, but it could be nice.

In terms of content, one thing I would like to see in the remake is the presence of media - radio, TV, internet if there is one. Of course, you'd have the "Shinra touch" on the media, but it doesn't have to be glaring. They could simply broadcast mostly game shows and other entertainment programs, with newscasts being more occasional. If you're the supplier of people's daily entertainment, they'll hardly want to go against you.
In game, it would be fun to be able to just turn a TV on and watch a "regular broadcast", with those being able to bring in all sorts of in-world cultural references. It could be a great platform for world-building.

I bet they're keen on reality TV.
"So you think you want to be in SOLDIER?" The last candidate standing gets to try out for SOLDIER for real - but in fact, they all end up in Deepground.
"Costa Shore" - the compelling drama of people who spend their lives sunbathing on the wings of seaplanes
"Monster Hunter" - self-explanatory
"Fan Club Wars" - it's actually a panel quiz show with teams from the different fan-clubs
"So you think you want to be in LOVELESS?" same format, but for aspiring actors
"Hidden Treasures of the Deep Slums" - the compelling drama of poverty stricken folk who pick up trash dropped from the plate for a living
"The Swarm" - the compelling drama of girls who dress up as Honeybees and call you Poo
"Midgar's Worst Summoner" - also self-explanatory
"Dragon's Den" - that's exactly what they'd call it, and if you think President Shinra wouldn't be 110% up for this then you haven't been playing the same game I have.
