Hopes for Remake & Rebirth (story/content)

I'd really like them to do something with the PHS in regards to certain events so we can get all of the characters thoughts on something that happened, kind of like when Zack got messages/emails through after chapters in CC, or leading up to an event, I quite liked that touch, it'd be interesting if they did something similar in the remake.

Or, they've done something with FFIV for the DS when you changed your party leader you could get a thought bubble up and you could see what was going through their mind at the time. A really nice example would be it'd be interesting to see Tifa's thoughts throughout the game in relation to things Cloud says or does, or Aerith thoughts when she learns a bit more about the Ancients, just little things like that would be a nice touch and open up hints about the characters stories a bit more.
If you're aware of the Tales of games - Abyss, Symphonia, Vesperia - they have a mechanic where at certain points in the game (based on various triggers), it'll prompt you to press select to watch a short "skit." The skits are optional and go away if you ignore them long enough. They don't provide any necessary exposition for following the game's plot. They solely exist to give you more insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Sometimes they happen after important events. Sometimes they're completely slice of life.
I also think a lot about the mechanic of support conversations in Fire Emblem, where you can just place people next to each other in battles all the time, and unlock conversations between them, strengthening the bond between them.
I'm very interested in ways video games can develop characters.
I especially like that they make it optional, so it doesn't distract from the action of the game unless you let it. And I hugely, massively, appreciate when any kind of narrative includes character interactions that are not NECESSARY, but only serve to give you a deeper, more complex view of the characters.
That being said, I don't have my hopes up.
This is going to be a huge project, and I don't expect them to spend much time on anything that's not necessary.
On replaying the OG game, I have realized in the past that, it doesn't actually have a whole lot of depth to it. It just feels like it does to those of us aware of the compilation as a whole. I'm one of those weirdos that loves the BOOKS. And I think that's where the depth belongs, in any medium where they can flesh things out further and more complexly without bleeding money and taking 10 years to release the game.

Please have the characters remember and resent that Reno and Tseng cheerfully killed thousands of people with no attempt at excuses or justifications, and definitely no Turks/Rufus secretly aiding AVALANCHE behind the scenes, or undermining the achievements of other characters a la BC.

I'm all for this but I'm curious what the rest of you think about having locations like the ruins of Banora being present and explorable little sidequest type areas. They're clearly Compilation content, but I kinda feel like having a new Final Fantasy VII, I want access to be able to visit places like that and see new character reactions to things, since they're also locations that they can capitalize on the Compilation references whereas they can leave the main game sections free from them aside from occasional background and extra details.

I'm down for any allusions or references to other compilation content. I think the only thing that's ever bothered me is the constant retconning and contradictions that make it difficult to suspend your disbelief. If they can combine everything in a way that doesn't feel like a gross smashing together of different but similar universes, I would honestly appreciate it.

  • okay so this game has the dark and gritty stuff but PLEASE square remember the game had a good sense of humor, something you've been sorely lacking. weird shit happened all the time. the characters would give each other shit and take the piss like real friends. please don't forget that. it's okay to be more silly and less pretentious

Seconded. The OG was quite serious, dark and gritty when needed but it also had plenty of goofiness in it to balance things out and it was this balance that gave the game it's charm and amazing tone. I really hope they keep that spirit in the remake and don't go overly serious with it.

There also should be more information about Sephiroth's childhood. Just have some NPC lab aide around who remembers Sephiroth's years growing up in Shinra.

Maybe even have an NPC former Soldier who remembers serving in the same unit with Sephiroth during the Wutai War.

Hey guys.

So do you think the Turks are going to have black or blue suits?

I never really got why they were blue to begin with. Black makes much more sense for their line of work. While won't really mind much either way, for the sake of prioritizing OG canon over the compilation, I think it should be blue.

I'm thinking that they probably made them blue so as to keep them more visually distinct from Sephiroth.

I definitely want the lighter moments to be as plentiful as possible, that's something wider compilation content was completely lacking (aside from maybe CC). Hello Costa Del Sol visit #1, I can't wait to see what the remake makes of you :P

I second the notion that being able to find the ruins of Banora or Modeoheim or whatever on the World Map would be pretty cool.

I'm really hoping Lucrecia's cave is in the same place and looks as mental as it did in the original.

Would also love to be hearing more Cetra lore since the wider compilation completely ignored it.

Force said something on page one or two re: triple linked materia slots, I've always thought that this could have interesting implications. Like linking powerful materia with mp turbo and hp/mp absorb.

Would like it if they added a water and wind materia. I've modded these in myself and used water cannon/ aero animations to make it work, but proper ones so we have all the elements :D.

All the OG weapons. I'm not even a little bit interested in that multi sword OTT nomura thing Cloud uses in AC but I wouldn't die of unhappiness if it was included.

I am hoping more than anything that they do justice to Aerith's death scene. I'm sure we all are though so maybe bringing that up is pointless. Even if it gets an M rating though, I wouldn't be surprised if they framed the scene in such a way that you don't actually see the sword coming through her torso, and I wouldn't mind not seeing that tbf.

Related to that, I really want that sense of silence to remain after that moment. How no one mentions it again for a really long time. This always bothered me when I was younger but now that I'm older I feel like it's super poignant that they have this pain and they mention it right after it happens, then they're kind of just focussed on the mission and don't talk about it. HOWEVER, if there are videos at the Icicle Inn I better hear the characters commenting on them.

Hey, they could totally give us a bit more of a scene if we can still return to sector 5 in the late game and you see Aerith's "ghost" in the church. I've seen people say this is a scripting glitch but I'm still convinced it's intentional, because one of the kids say you scared her away and the other asks where she's gone.

No matter what they do design and gameplay wise, I want that feeling to be there that we're fugitives on a journey post Midgar. That's important. I think the worst thing that could happen is cutscene transitions between towns rather than actual travel, but hopefully that's worst case scenario brain ramblings.

idk, a million other things

I really don't want them to overuse Sephiroth. Part of the reason he was so effective in the original game is that he had so much influence on the plot and the other characters despite barely even being onscreen. That went a large part of the way toward making him so intimidating. It also seems like the more he's onscreen in the Compilation, the less effective he actually is, so they've undone part of the reason he was such an effective villain twice over. I'm fine if they put in references to him at various points in the plot to elaborate on his background or whatever, but in general, the less we see him, the more effective the moments he actually is onscreen will be.

^^Sephiroth is scary the way Jaws (the original) is scary. His influence is felt everywhere, but he's rarely seen until they take care of him for good

I actually want Jenova to have an equal footing with her son and even have a more humanoid form. I want her to actually be implied to have been her own planet's omega,Chaos, or even goddess. Neither she or her son have total domination of each other but are just in a symbiotic relationship. And make it so she is much more sentient than she was in the original game.

Starling

I don't see that working with the OG's feel. It'd be changing too much. Also, I got the impression from the OG that Jenova's been brain-dead since the Cetra sealed it. Sephiroth going insane is scarier knowing it was all him, not Jenova manipulating him into it. He seems to have assimilated what was left of her into him, making them essentially the same entity by the time the plot rolls around so I guess there's that.

Claymore

*Shudder* Yeah, I definitely do not want that. I still cringe at the thought of the raging wars that used to go on in a part of the fandom between those who maintained that Jenova was in control the entire time (and so, Sephiroth wasn't the great villain that SE and the fandom were making him out to be) against those that believed that Sephiroth was in control. Even though Advent Children made it clearer, they kept pushing that Jenova was the be-all-end-all and that Sephiroth ranks the lowest of the series' enemies.

Yeah. I really don't want to go down that road again.

Im very curious whether or not they will keep all the language from the original game. There was alot of that in it, more then any T rated game I can remember.

That's actually the first thing I thought of when it was announced.

I want to see the love triangle debate sorted. It needs to be made clearer. Personally id like to see it fit in with the Case Of The Lifestream (The Maiden Who Travels The Planet).

He doesnt really show any emotion towards either of them...well, until one dies. Maybe Jenova broke his brain (or other organs).

I'd like them not to patronize or painstakingly spell everything out for us.

The ambiguity of certain parts of the original has generated nigh on twenty years of debate and discussion and fan theories and fanfiction and fanart and everything else.

No definitive canon where it wasn't before, please. Broker audience discussion and debate. I'd rather go the rest of my days re-reading and re-reading every LTD thread on this forum than have Square just point blank tell us "He really liked this lady all along." Or "Oh yeah, it was totally all Sephiroth controlling Jenova. And that smoke you see coming out of the Midgar ruins in the post-credit scenes? It's totally just a bush fire, not people or any form of civilization."

FFVII did ambiguity like the love triangle so well. I mean hey, we're still nyatterin' about it today. It'd be a shame to strip that potential for extrapolation and debate from the game.
