That is particularly stupid though. Even for IGN. But who cares? They've been saying stupid shit since 2000. No use thinking they'd stop now.

It sure is funny though. For a game that's considered "overrated" they sure keep feeding it attention thereby feeding the cycle of it staying in the forefront and thus gain more attention and etc etc.

Stupid. The second a game becomes popular it picks up a bunch of haters for the sole purpose of being cool and non-conformist. They push fans into further levels of extremity, overrating it, its a cycle.

It didn't reinvent the genre, far from it, but the fact remains that it got more people (westerners, anyway) into jrpgs than any other game.

That article was pretty funny, all I saw was comments from people who either loved the game or hated it. No neutral 3rd party that comented on it without being biased.

Final Fantasy VII, being my first FF, was a fantastic game that I really enjoyed, however it did have it's flaws and I doubt its the best RPG of all time, even to a fan like me (I actualy enjoyed playing Valkyrie Profile 2 as much as I did FF7).

Also nobody cares what IGN thinks

Final Fantasy VII is MY favorite game of all time, bar none. But I don't make claims to it being the best game of all time. You'd have a hard time making that claim about any game, its too subjective. You'd even find people that didn't like OoT if you look hard enough. (Actually, after the combat system in Twilight Princess, I have a hard time going back to Ocarina.)

"Overrated" or "underrated", is based on our subjective opinions about a game, related with the popularity it got.
If you think a game is not good enough to deserve the popularity it have, then it's overrated. If you think a game is better than the majority give it credit for, then it's underrated.

In the end, doesn't mater what you say, because this is your opinion, and nothing more.

Any game that gets as much attention as FFVII gets has to be overrated, just because it really isn't that much better than a number of other games that got far less attention. Though to be fair, some of that's just the fault of stupid development companies not releasing enough copies of their games (I'm looking at you, Suikoden II). But really, FFVII wasn't that much of a leap forward from FFVI and Chrono Trigger, and in reality has a lot of plot elements in common with both of them.

There is no such thing as something being "overrated" in general. If all those people think it's good, then that's that for them.

Mmm. I think it might be overrated. But the fact that it was good enough for the people who played it to say it's as awesome as it is, means it's really a great game. . It gained all the praises.

You could say anything is overrated if its popular though.

Trying to diminish the attention of something by drawing attention to it is rather dumb because all it does is validate its "ratedness" to the public. If something was truly overrated then eventually it'd fade away like a fad and thus be forgotten. Like pogs. Or tamagochis. Or the other thousands of things that faded into nothingness. If it gains a cult following and then subsequently becomes popular, then clearly either everyone is:

a.) Insane and being brainwashed into think its popular.

or

b.) It's popular.

Clearly, *SOMETHING* is in the FFVII stew that made it get to the point its at and claiming its one big illusion is highly pretentious and stupid. It's like ignoring what's already written on the wall. If you don't LIKE it, that's one thing. But hell, anything is overrated that's popular because people who like something will build it up to what they think it should be because they well...like it.

It's a subjective interpretation. And ignoring the majority popular interpretation of what its rated as is useless.

I found it incredibly distracting that they flipped Vincent in the picture at the top. His hair does not fall to the left, it falls to the right. Wtf. IGN failed before I even read the article.
