No story is original. :monster:

What specific stories is this really copying though? Is this plagiarism?

I actually thought there was a movie recently, which had the same basic storyline. Humans come to some alien planet, and try to defeat the natives etc. James Cameron has the apparent excuse that he was working on this story for like a decade or something though. Yes, they do need more original ideas, but I'm all for more comic characters having movies.

For the record, reviews are about as reliable as... oh wait, they're their own analogy.

You want to know why games only get high ratings these days? Because only good games are sent to reviewers. Shit games (Rogue Warrior, recently, for example) are silenced to death, and won't appear on most review sites (or so the creators want).

Same goes for movies. People are afraid of rating a movie negatively.

Last movie I saw that was OMG FOR THE WIN in terms of graphics was 10.000 BC, and it was a complete crock of utter shit. Seriously.

True, the reviewers I pay attention to arnt afraid to say a movie's shit tho.

Battle for Terra, which was actually a pretty damn good movie, but got overlooked cause it was a cheap movie, and it showed in the animation, turning people off

What did they want to do with it?

From what they said in the DVD documentaries, they went to Miramax with the script for two movies, and Miramax wanted to bunch the three books into only one. Then they went to New Line, and were pleasantly surprised when NL told them: “And, why don’t you make it in three movies, one for each book?”

I don’t agree with that. A story is a combination of plot resources, and those plot resources are the ones which are already invented. What really makes a story “original” is how the author combines said resources. I don’t know you, but Avatar’s story sound pretty old to me. It’s ok that it’s not a remake, or sequel, or a prequel, it’s just a retelling of the Pocahontas’ story, and that’s old.

Oops, sorry ^^; But thing is that, though I heard from Ferngully on its day, my brain blocked that memory so I wouldn't get permanently traumatized :monster:

You have my sword thanks.

Also (from what I've read), this movie has more elements from Starship Troopers (the book) than the official moviefication of it has. Tr00 combat suits and space marines and shit.

I watched this movie, and I actually enjoyed my Smurf v Marine viewing experience. Needed trimming for time, but the fight scenes were a spectacle, at least.

It was very predictable though.

Fuck, another combo breaker? You were supposed to say

Blue Furries. IN SPACE!

or Smurfs. IN SPACE!

or Cameron's Sexual Blue Furry Indian Fantasies. IN SPACE!

or IN SPACE!

Also, Cameron's next project will most likely be AS KIDS!

As kids? I'm waiting for him to do something with his Battle Angel Alita rights. His ownership apparently restricts me from buying the anime.

This, although I think it's victories make up for its failures.

and the cg really is outstanding.

Like I was saying to Dacon last night, it instantly damages my opinion of a movie whenever its titled as 'Director's Name's: Movie Title'. I think that might have have tainted my entire experience of this movie, or if it was just too predictable to hold my interest. Either way, I wasn't a fan.

Hmm, interested in this now due to my sister (who hates all sci-fi/fantasy) claiming it was breath-taking.

^ This. It gives me the impression that the movie is not good enough by itself and it needs to carry the director's name in front of it so people notice that it exists.

I think that it's mostly for the differentiation between this & the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" film. Either way, I quite enjoyed the film.

it probably would have been better for me if there wasnt a group of jock assholes behind me laughing whenever action was happening cause violence is cool and laughing at all the na'vi stuff cause in their words, "huh huh, what retards". and they were literally laughing with that stupid beavis and butthead "huh huh"

Wasn't exactly disappointed, but there was definitely a lot of unnecessary hype. I'd seen the story done before. The dialogue wasn't anything special and kind of pissed me off at times. The acting was pretty good, but not amazing. I did enjoy the graphics, though that seemed to be the highlight of the film. It did get a little long and drawn out. Had they done the story better or given me something innovative to stick around for, I doubt I'd've considered it an issue.

There were so many things they could have done better or different to take it over the edge, and yet they spent so much money to do stuff I'd seen dozens of times before.
