I can now officially say that I much prefered Where the Wild Things Are to this.

Hell, I even thought 2012 was a more enjoyable cinema experience. Like Avatar this movie is so predictable, but its self aware enough to just roll with the punches. Avatar takes itself too seriously for what it is.

Good battle scenes though. But there's been much better films than this released this year.

I will fill you all in with my expert opinion after I watch it tonight.

Edit: my opinion was; while the story was predictable, visually, Avatar is breath-taking and ground breaking. Certain scenes gave you shivers up your spine, and although it had a serious issue with scenery porn, I didn't take issue with it, due to the fact the environment was amazingly rendered.
Pretty amazeballs, definitely will take cinema to the next level.

I no get. All stories have similar elements. Shakespeare stole from everyone and their uncle. Anywhooozle...

I really enjoyed it. Visually it was stunning and you gotta give it props for building an entire world in like...ok fine, 3hrs. Yes, the story was predictable, but to be honest I went in expecting nothing spectacular. Trailers were laaaaame.

I give him props for making me so interested in the spectacle that I overlooked things like cookiecutter black and white heores/villains.

whatever, I thought it was AWESOME!

I enjoyed it very much, and thought it was a great movie. Yes, it was predictable in a number of ways, but something made me forget about that, which is a victory on its own!

Of course, it might be just me (and a lot of more people, it would seem, haha) since I tend to like cliché stories, and I enjoy the depiction of their culture, which is not "story" per se, so it wouldn't have been "copied".

Anyway, until one week or two, I didn't feel like I specially wanted to go watch it, but now I'm all "wow" about it.

I saw it in 3D. The story wasn't great, perhaps the worst part is the villain who is so cliche and over the top you could never take him seriously. But it was a great movie with AWESOME visuals. Definitely gonna be in the history books.

I just saw this movie, and I loved it. ♥ Yeah, it was really cliche and I agree when people say it's like Pochahontas in the sky, but I really got into the movie. I loved the characters, the battle scenes were spectacular, and it even got a few laughs out of me. It certainly wasn't boring to watch, and wasn't a waste of my money... Well, not my money. Matt's money.

it will definetly pass it.

in its second week it had a 3% drop off. that is insane. When all's said and done, this'll be the highest grossing movie of all time.

I actually didn't mind Titanic, as much of a chick-flick disaster film it was. I refuse to watch this film. I think people are only going to see it because of the hype, and to observe pretty graphics. If the story is average, it doesn't impress me. Unless of course it is an action film, then it doesn't need a good storyline. Discuss.

I didn't mind Titanic, and I sort of am proud to say I have NEVER watched it :desu:.

However, I do think that, watching Avatar sort of defeated the purpose of not watching a movie just because of the hype, but in my case it was a bit different. I really didn't get hyped until the very last minute. In fact, the decisive point was when I wanted to buy tickets and I was forced to stay home because there were no tickets left.

After then, I went "damn, want to see it!"

So yeah.

That was the best thing you could do. I was literally bullied on watching it and the money I spent on the ticket still stings me after all these years -___-

I can imagine... I guess I was lucky because I was young enough not to be bullied, and my parents didn't take me to watch it, probably thinking I wouldn't be interested. Needless to say that, when they've put it on TV, I couldn't be bothered to watch it, and so, the tale goes on...

But hey, wow, bullied on watching it? Men, people are scaaaary!

Female classmates are scary, and even scarier if you happen to be another female :wacky: It was stupid of my part because I was fed up of being called dumb because I said I wasn't interested, so I went just to show that I wasn't dumb... and ended up feeling even dumber :monster: . But, you know, we tend to be quite stupid when we are 13.

That was a real valuable lesson, by the way, so in the end I think I won something: the ability to not to give a shit about what people say about me :monster:

I remember a few female classmates being scary to each other :monster:, and while it might have been stupid, you said it, 13's a bad age!!
However, I have to say, kudos to you for being a 13 year old female who was not interested in that movie! I remember all the girls from my class who were absolutely hyped about it...

Thanks!

Girls were hyped only about diCaprio, I guess :awesome: But that guy has always creeped me out :(

Yeah, I never quite understood why girls would like such a "man", but anyway, sometimes, some things really are a mystery, to me...

Oh, and I hadn't seen your edit before, I think it is a valuable lesson, indeed!

There's a difference is not liking something others like, and not liking something *because* others like it. Take Titanic, other people like it and you don't, that's fine. But making a point to not like it or not see it just because it's so popular? What's the point of that? "Everyone likes this, so I'm not going to see it". That's a really poor decision. See it and then decide if you don't like it.

I don't listen to hype or propaganda either, though, in the end the only person fit to decide what I do is me. I went to see Avatar because it looked cool, and yeah I heard the story sucked but I wanted to see for myself. And yeah the story *did* kinda suck, but for the gorgeous visuals and the pretty cool action scenes it was a great movie.

I fixed my post and added "about me" to that sentence, which was what I really wanted to say :awesome:

You are right.

That "Everyone likes this, so I'm not going to see it" logic was not my reason, it was only that i never liked diCaprio, and knowing that Titanic was a tragic love story was a let down for me. I've always hated tragic endings, and Titanic reminded me why. I can't see the point of going to the cinema with a box of tissues ready so you can cry your eyes out over a drama, when life gives you plenty of chances to do the same thing for free :monster:

And for Avatar, my critic has only been all along about the script. I don't doubt that I would come out of the cinema starry-eyed because of the special effects, but sometimes it bugs me that some movies are officially considered "better" because they are the work of certain director. I know it's stupid and what the Academy thinks about a movie when they give the Oscars won't have a hand on my personal opinion. But somehow it seems unfair to me.

Avatar has passed 1 Billion and counting. If it hits 1.1, it'll be the second-highest-grossing film after Titanic with 1.8
Oh shit, not another Cameron movie as highest grossing. What was the figure for Dark Knight peoplez?
Also, there were crazies that watched the movie dozens of times in the cinema at the time.
wasn't there a guy who watched it over 100 times or something?
