Then again, "it was self defense" only works so much if you go into a building with the intent to blow it up.

Given that said buildings were pretty much destroying the planet, a strong case could be made that blowing them up WAS self-defence.

It's like everyone said. Avalanche was killing people, but that doesn't make them bloodlust monsters who enjoy killing and washing in the blood of their victims. They were just trying to survive.

Unless they blame them for the Meteor crisis to begin with. They were apparently willing to do so when Shinra tried to execute them.

But the Meteor crisis is the second portion of the Jenova War. And they are considered the heroes of it.
Not to mention that I'm pretty sure everyone knew it was Sephiroth's fault. I remember an NPC in Kalm saying something like "Shinra is going to destroy Sephiroth's barrier"(around the Crater). If they blame him for the barrier, they probably blame him for Meteor too.

Now, think of all the other Shinra grunts you kill while playing through the game. It gives me chills, Cloud and AVALANCHE slaughter Shinra troops by the dozen, and how many of them were just like Cloud and just wanted to impress the cute neighbor girl?

Then think of the grunt-genocide Zack committed, but then we're supposed to sob for him because he wanted to be a...."hero."

The gang indicates they hoped Shinra's plan to blow up Meteor would work, despite the fact they spend so much time sabotaging it! If they let them launch all 4 huge Materia in it, maybe it would have worked!

I'm pretty sure Bugenhagen explains to the party that the Huge Materia would have no effect because the idea is that Meteor is being summoned to the Planet so even if it was damaged, it would continue to descend. Or the Black Materia would summon another planetoid. On top of that, he believes it is a great waste of the knowledge and wisdom in the Materia to launch it into space. If Bugenhagen says it, then I for one believe it.

And tbh I hadn't gotten that far in the chronology, but good spot.
