Difficulty is up, there's a limited amount of items and resource. From what I heard, there's some back and forth about it, with the Japanese saying it's too hard but the streamers saying it ain't too bad.
you don't get healed after battle any more, and you're limited to 6 healing items (at the start, judging by the stats screen you must get expansions later) and gp abilities.
since you're on your own, there's that too. there's no one to heal you. i'm playing on easy first since that's what square recommended, but the only battles that have caused me much trouble is are bosses or bigger enemies.
but battling along isn't going to really help you since you don't level up from battles. any kind of improvements comes from completing quests to get stat boosts. sometimes quests will involve having to battle to collect items (the chocolina/prayer canvas quests), but spending your time just fighting is only going to waste your time and lead to a game over.
Customization appearance wise is limited to one accessory (like XIII-2) and changing colors. All the direrentish costumes are bought at different stores.
you can only change colours on wear, either for individual parts or all over. you have the choice of a preset palette or a custom one.
The textures look really rough in this game, it's kind of awkward. On the flip side, the game's maps are actually quite big and more than once I popped in the player was lost or something.
i think some of the textures look really nice taken on their own (
look at this sand i spent 5 minutes in awe of this sand), but together they can look odd and out of place. luxerion is the only location i've explored thoroughly, but sometimes the textures there can look really disjointed
then there is the npcs, with their odd looking accessories like
hats precariously balancing on their
heads (that could be a whole category of npcs right there). there's some purpose behind that, since you seem to get those accessories for completing their quests but it still looks strange sometimes (and i know you've just taken a bunch of stuff from ffxiii-2). plus the npc cutscenes which have a kind of stilted and awkwardness about them, which ffxiii-2 had too.
it's a 'ffx-2' type game. it doesn't look godawful but they haven't pushed the boat out or anything graphically (maybe all those jibes about polishing rocks hurt their feelings). but on the flipside, they filled it with lots of things to do.
and i can attest to getting lost
