They should have called it "Spirit Edge" or something like that this time. Maybe "Chaos Edge," given what chaos is in FFXIII.

You know, really winked back at us since we all know what's going on here.

Knockout Wave? Is that what they're calling it? I thought it was Dark Wave?

Do you believe slight errors in a script can change the entire meaning of something when its changed over into English?

like God=Maker or that warrior goddess crap.

Oh, it totally can. Like the confusion of XIII-2's official translation having Noel say that he was the child to be born when he actually said "we were the last children," with Yeul being younger.

I'm having a debate where someone said I shouldn't use the more correct version when it comes to text/datalog and story bits because the English audience isn't familiar with it and the English version should also be correct even with the errors when comparing the two.

That person is wrong. :monster:

According to that logic, FFXII happened after FFTactics rather than the reverse (correct) order of events. Official translation errors are still translation errors.

I'm a firm supporter of unofficial ACCURATE translations.

Excuse me while I give you an example from Guilty Gear:

In Guilty Gear Judgement, Testament is labeled "The Ultimate Gear", but the character used to describe him isn't "ultimate" it's "independent" in context. And technically Justice (a Command Type Gear that came before him) was more powerful than he ever was.

So technically Testament was simply the first known "Independent" Gear after Justice' death (since Gears don't normally operate on their own without a Command Type).

And technically THAT is wrong too since Sol Badguy the Prototype Gear predates Testament by a few hundred years besides...and Sol was the one who KILLED Justice and nearly killed Testament, and he's independent.

*shrug* Oh well... Translation Error.

I'm bigger on fantranslations as well. Maybe being in the nerdy anime community made it be that way, but for a long time in the Naruto, there was a lot of transparency on how and why they translated it a certain way. Like, one person would translate like X, another translator would come it and correct them/ask people why they did it.

If there was a debate that centered around some information, translators would usually break down the sentence and explain different definitions of words and why they translated it that way.

If you are lucky enough to have multiple translators in your fandom, you could pick and chose depending on quirks of translating and level. It's easy to figure out who has the most experience and is just best in a translator group but it's not just about that. Some translators or more strict/faithful to the translators, some are more open to changing wording to make it smoother for English speaking audiences- some people keep in hard to translate words or suffixes (Nakama, -san, etc) and some people don't. Other translators make frequent translator notes so that the cultural background is more easily explained.

Anyway, I never bought the idea that official translators are better than unofficial ones. Sure average jo in Japanese 201 won't be accurate, but... lots of fantranslators are not 201. Just sayin'

FFXIII made me jump on the fanslations>>>>official English version train. With XIII I feel that the fanslations are closer to the JP than the English will ever be.

i hate those people

i can totally understanding using the english version if that's the one you understand, and not everything people say are in the japanese versions are actually there, but dismissing the original version because you happen to speak a different language is stupid. the english (and every other language's) version is derived from the japanese one. 'derived' means it's based on that one, so what's the issue with looking at that?

the only reason i can think of is if you've based some theory or viewpoint on the english version which turns out to be wrong, but that's still a silly reason.

I wrote a long rant on the subject but my browser ate it. But basically, yeah, derived from Japanese. People would analyze English sentences to death without even once consulting a translator/ different translations. It's probably ignorance slash lack of knowledge on languages and culture, but it still irks me.

so is 'darkwave' the name for the thing that appears on the enemies' hp bar in battle when you use the right attack? idk, 'knock out wave' is a simple name that tells you what happens afterwards; they go into 'knock out' status. what happens if that's 'dark wave'? they go 'dark'?

it's a minor complaint, like when they changed 'optima change' to 'paradigm shift'. then the japanese version of ffxiii-2 used 'paradigm shift' (which help signal that the battle system had been enhanced) and the english version just... used the same name. but i like minor complaints

This is why I hate console exclusivity... It's like having two merchants on opposite sides of the street shouting their wares for sale.

If I'm going to get what I want, I'm going to get everything I want.

If you don't have everything I want, why bother?

To be honest though, it seems like Playstation 3-4 are reaping most of the benefits regarding that (though I'm not too surprised since Sony won the argument regarding game-sharing).

Btw guys, the collector's edition of this isn't available in the EU. Which is a bit weird since I have them for XIII and XIII-2. SE just seems to hate the EU lately. Which again is a bit weird because we're the ones they shaft the most money out of.

I thought it was, since I remembered having pre-ordered it. But I checked the pre-order ticket and it's "just" the regular edition + Cloud DLC code (?). I am surprised at myself.

And this is thus bullshit.

Ok, I am on a NG+ now, doing Normal not Hard yet ... I just got a random free DLC ... it was a little orange mini flan thing (decoration) I'm not sure how this Square Enix Members thing works either ... do I have to log in somewhere ?

Or does it just work like in the same way getting the Siegfried costume did?

i started a new game+ but i went back on easy again :awesome: (at day 2 you should get an item which lets you start ng+ wherever you are in the game)

the mini flan decoration is their 'new years' gift. the members site says you just need to access the outworld service, you don't have to be registered at the members site. i haven't logged in today, but i guess from the sounds of it everyone gets this?

registering on the members site ( http://special.member.jp.square-enix.com/lrff13/ ) means linking your square enix members and psn accounts first though. i don't know if they can be unlink, or if you could link the same account to the japanese site and an english one.
