Took me a while to get to grips with everything but I feel fairly proficient in blocking at the correct moments now, even if it's still a bit of a pain. I like the battle system. From an objective standpoint it's better than XIII or XIII-2's in terms of strategy if I'm honest, but I prefer the paradigm system.
The degree of freedom with the schema micromanagement is really cool but I find it a little overwhelming and I think it's stupid that 2 different schemas can't share weapons and abilities and accessories even though they're universal weapons, skills and accessories. Like I have to have thunder twice to have it simultaneously equipped on 2 different builds (even if one of them is in reserve!) which is a bit dumb but hey ho.
Still getting to grips with how to stagger effectively. I mean I understand exactly how it works, but I keep making the mistake of pausing to think in battle when you're supposed to constantly attack. Either that or I don't keep enough of an eye on the ATB and I'm pressing the button even though the game is like NOOOOOO SWITCH YOU IDIOT. But again, it's all good.
Exploration is actually surprisingly fun. Running around and jumping and climbing up ladders and stuff, it's a hoot. One thing that irks me a little is the chests that cost EP or the chests that have red swirliness on them and can't be opened yet for whatever reason and NOTHING IN GAME TELLS YOU WHY THIS IS I MEAN WHEN CAN I OPEN THEM
Also soooooooooo many shops everywhere wtf. I don't have a problem with it but there are a lot of them.
I love the open world gameplay. I just love it. The only area I've completely explored is Luxerion, I've seen most of the Wildlands too. I did a quick pit stop in Dead Dunes at one point and I automatically fell in love with the place, which is weird because I'm not a desert-loving person normally but I just thought it was great (possibly just the music did this for me
).
OK story:
Snow is hot. I haven't seen him since the prologue but he's just so delicious. Anyway, I like what they did with his character etc. Noel, I also kind of liked his storyline too but I felt like he just kind of flip-flopped. One minute he's the most determined person ever then the next he's like "no this is wrong". Well OK then Noel. It didn't bother me that much probably because I'm glad he saw the light (lol).
Vanille: VERY INTERESTING. I've just done the quest where you meet her again for the first time and she explains about the chaos and stuff, so I'm wondering where that's going. And obviously that'll lead to going to see Fang which I can't fucking wait for.
Nursed my chocobo back to health and called him Odin (because it's Odin. I mean I don't know if that's a thing that comes up again later but it's very clear that this is who it is from the things they all say about him).
Went to Moogle Village in the Wildlands and literally howled with laughter at the hug scene between Mog and Lightning. The Moogle village is really pretty.
Overall very interested to see where the story is going and I prefer the narrative to previous games - it's just a lot more direct in terms of what the characters actually say to each other. It's all about them and their history and there's no floaty weird makes-no-sense crap dialogue between them which is awesome.
Side-quests: I've seen reviews moaning that it's just a lot of fetch quests and "collect x of this" but I'm like... what else do you expect? I've never seen side-quests that are so arbitrary so damn fleshed out either. Every single NPC has a voice actor and honestly I struggle not to skip dialogue sometimes. You're talking about minutes listening to some dude tell you he lost a shoe on the other side of the world 50 years ago. You're just like DUDE I DON'T CARE LET ME JUST GO GET THE SHOE! However this is awesome and they put a lot of effort into it.
Sidequest where Lumina turned some random person into a cat was hilarious but also quite challenging when you have to avoid all the cats near the end of it.
The music in this game is phenomenal so far.
I think that's it for today
