I always got the impression C/A was the more popular ship at time after the OG, where "Cloud searching for Aerith in the Promised Land" was a more popular reading (egged on by stuff like FFT and KH). Death and ambiguity is baked into the appeal of the romance, and it makes sense within certain confines/interpretations of the OG. I feel like the compilation has pushed C/T to popularity, and has Z/A its own thing for pretty pragmatic storytelling purposes. By making the choice to continue the narrative as they have, there's really no way to ignore C/T being together without characterizing Cloud negatively. By making Zack a lead guy, C/A becomes a harder sell because they want you to have investment in this guy's romantic life just as much as anything else.
Honestly, when I was playing FFXV it felt like they were trying to recreate that romantic appeal that was present in the OG reading of C/A in Noctis/Luna... but uh... Results may vary on that one
Funny thing is I see more comparisons to Noctis and Luna from Zerith-shippers.
That is the thing though. If Aerith hadn't died there's no telling what might have happened instead. Cloud and Tifa's connection runs deeper than just "she is other grill" to be sure, but the feelings he never got to process for Aerith still linger. That's why I don't think the LTD has a winner. The remake might change everything though, so we'll see.
I disagree. Cloud's "feelings" for Aerith always rested on a foundation of guilt over her death. Nothing would have come of it, had she lived.
It always seemed to me that Cloud had feelings for both the grills, and there isn't such a definite answer to the LTD as people would like.
Cloud ends up with Tifa, yes, but he's obviously still got hang ups about Aerith, as does Tifa in her own way. Those feelings don't just go away.
That's called guilt. Not love.
Currently writing a long analysis on this (don't judge to harshly I'm in month 3 of quarantine where I live and going insane), it won't be ready in time for posting to relevant discussion here but basically there are almost no Clerith scenes after chapter 14.
I've seen a few people claim that there are, so here is a summery of the moments I've seen posted on tumbr/twitter:
The look/smile between Cloud and Aerith in her bedroom following Wedge telling them to get to the roof
Her grabbing his arm at Destiny's crossroads
After you beat the Whispers Cloud asks Aerith where they are and then looks at her when he hears Sephiroth's voice
The ending scene where Cloud says he has to go after Sephiroth and Aerith tells Cloud that they can beat him
Edited to add: There are a good number of both "ship" moments and subtle C/T moments after Chapter 14, which is really interesting. The big ones being Cloud saving Tifa after the heligunner fight, Tifa going to Cloud during his headache in front of Jenova, Tifa by Cloud's bedside, Tifa saving Cloud on the roof, Cloud saving Tifa when the Whisper Rubrum attacks her.
Those don't strike me as "Clerith" moments. Those scenes could easily be written off as "he's the hero and she's the heroine of the overarching plot, and so they interact with eachother."
I've also seen "you came for me", Cloud checking on Aerith in the truck during the Midgar highway escape, "Barret, do this for me- please." Cloud checking on Aerith while on the bike while in the Shinra Building entrance, mentioned.
- His response was "yep." Not a Clerith moment.
- Cloud was worried about everyone in the truck.
- Cloud asked everyone to escape while he dueled Rufus, not just Barret for Aerith's sake.
If every time Tifa touches Cloud is going to be used as a shipping moment of course people are going to do the same in the other case ?
Things like Cloud and Aerith sharing a non verbal exchange after the Domino and Wedge event I don't think are less than CxT things.
Disagree, because most of the time there's no point to Cloud and Tifa's touching. It's just there, which makes it seem even more intimate.
However, when Aerith grabbed his arm before Destiny's Crossroads, it was for a functional purpose.
Speaking of Scarlet, I can't wait to see the slap fight this time!
That slap fight still makes no sense to me. How does Tifa, an experienced martial artist, lose to Scarlet?
