I'm not clear as to what you mean by "originally a typical FF love story".
FFVII played with your expectations, knowing that in most games the hero got the special heroine (white mage/magic user) and that the audience would expect this upon first meeting Aeris. It took that and turned it on its head. This play is in no way an original blueprint of any love story. They never intended Cloud and Aeris. They only thought the audience would expect it to unfold in a certain manner based on appearances. Then they went "HA! NO!"
This was because FFVII did want to move away from those models with this game, after all they were trying to make a big splash at the time. People would have expected someone like Barret to die (as they say), for example, but no one expected Aeris. Not only does one of the heroines die, she never comes back. AND she's not the love interest.
