If an official source is saying Cloud and Tifa express love for one another then they express love for one another. It doesn't matter if there is just the one scene, or two alternatives, or three - the outcome is still singular.

That makes no sense, the feelings ARE desire.

Deliberate ignorance, stubbornly and determinedly applied. Likely they already know the canon's not going their way, but they'll try their level best to reject the canon or muddy its conclusions using any excuse they can think of to create a gray area, and then insert their interpretations.

It is somewhat problematic that "It's been going on all this many years" is being used as an argument that it wouldn't be ended -- since that just means it's going to, in the mind of whoever is making that argument, continue on for however many more years, in which case "It's been going on all this many more years," in which case ... you get the idea.

That's what I thought Crisis Core's scenes of Aerith and Zack were. "Oi, people seemed to miss the big important reveal that Cloud was acting like Zack and that's what attracted Aerith. Better make every thing that happened between Aerith and Cloud something to do with Zack."

It seemed to the point of over kill, so the only reason I can see is that they really wanted to hit that idea home.

And even then they added the whole, "Aerith's feelings for Zack explains why she acts the way she does around Cloud in FFVII." quote in case you still missed it.
