Thank you Reanbell and Winter for actual replies kthx.
And yes, all right, Tifa shows a crapload of affection towards Cloud in game, and the Aeris/Tifa stuff is again imaginary (must...not...snicker...) but I find that Tifa's devotion to wheelchair Cloud, heartbreaking as it is, is almost Twilightian.
You will explain this. You will do so now.
Because comparing ANYONE in FF to fucking twilight needs some goddamn explaining.
But apparently this thread isn't about what the girls think.
Nope. It's about Cloud's choice. Canonically.
If that's the question, change a few words in my cool-bro-story and you get the same answer. Why is it so hard to believe that he loves them both? People love more than one person all of the time.
It is. But there's insufficient evidence to say he really really loves Aerith.
Depressing and angsty is good but I would like some Clerith fluff for once.
And I don't necessarily think Cloud and Tifa would have been together after AC, not necessarily that quickly. They're still rebuilding their relationship, especially considering how much they've been through. I think it makes perfect sense.
I think I know what fanfiction you're talking about. It's in Aerith's POV in AC, right?
Them getting back together makes sense. Them getting together for the first time...
does not.
Also, one of the cutest and also creepiest doujins I ever read was one where Zack and Aerith came to visit Tifa and she was the only member of 7th heaven who couldn't see them.
IIRC, Aerith talked about being reborn and called Tifa 'mom'
As I said, cute and creepy.
We have a hard time believing that Cloud loves both Tifa and Aerith the same way because:
- he knew Aerith for two, three weeks at best (while he's been in love with Tifa like forever)
- he wasn't even himself during that time
- he never truly showed a sign of romantic love towards her
- he just wants to be forgiven by her for failing her - he doesn't really show that OMG he can't lieve without her, or that he's given his heart to her
Yes, if she hadn't died, MAYBE things could have been different. Thing is, she died, and their bond never got past that. The player CAN make him bend towards Aerith for a bit, but that's as far as it goes, because the player as that time is the one who drives Cloud's heart. Cloud, after becoming himself again, is yet again about Tifa. He cares great deal about Aerith, yes he does, but love? Where? We've been waiting for so long for someone to show up and point out at signs of true love after he becomes himself again (because up until then, he's manipulated by Jenova so he would become closer to Aerith in order to make him kill her, hence, I think, the few occasions given to the player to "flirt" -kinda- with her). Clerith is just one big red herring.
Edit: darn, this was for ite
Oh, and also, you'd be surprised at how many depressing and angsty CloTi fics I read... a long time ago.
Remember, 90% of all fiction is shit.
I respectfully disagree on that one. I think that Cloud's feelings for Aeris were real - perhaps informed by the Zack-fusion thing, but their interactions - at least in the fanfic I've read (and I honestly love Cleris fluff) are charming and unique to them.
I know you thought this was a preference thread, but FUCK, man, even in such a thread, this makes no sense. Fanfics don't count. PERIOD.
Null, it's like being back on gamefaqs for one brief moment.
I also think it's awesome that a video game could challenge us to question exactly what makes love authentic, what validates it, in what way is it illusionary? Deep shit.
The problem with Cleris is that the canon sets Aeris up to die, and so she's two-giggles-and-a-wink away from a Mary Sue and her relationship with Cloud is all butterflies and roses so that he can feel maximum pain when she dies (although I would argue that she feels maximum pain, being, you know, stabbed to death).
1. It takes more than being written to die to make a Mary Sue. Nor is death needed for Suedom.
2. Aerith's interactions with everyone are designed to pull the heartstrings, not just Cloud, and are in no way 'butterflies and roses.' She's the bright and cheerful transfer student in troubled times archetype.
3. Being stabbed as she was probably rendered her completely insensate, if she didn't die instantly.
That opens the door for lots of fluffy nice stuff but the death is 1) the only piece of dramatic tension in their whole ship and 2) overdramatic.
No, Cait Sith's death is overdramatic. Hers is brutal.
Also, Zack, if there was an actual relationship, Zack himself would make for good dramatic tension.
In other words, fanfic writers are not clever about this shit.
Doesn`t this mean Cloud would still say “Mother?”, even if he saw that it`s Aerith who he is refering to?
Nomura said he got his eyes closed because it looked scary.
Interesting I think..
Yes.
Have you actually gone back and read this thread? There's no debate, it's 503 pages of horsing around.
*neighs*
::whinnies::
Anyway, is there a real, unresolved love triangle we could argue about? My wife likes to watch the Vampire Diaries. I noticed that Sensitive Vampire Guy and his renegade brother both like the lead chick lady.
While this is a LT, it's not an unresolved one. It's a 1_>2<->3 triangle, like FFIV. The chick, barring going stupid- and she might, writers can always go stupid- she'll be sticking with Sensivamp.
this thread isn't facts, it's actually 500 pages of circlejerking.
also lol HORATIO CAINE
Winter, this is facts. And circlejerk or not- I'd say it's more fucking around- one can circlejerk over the truth.
I'm in class right now, my prof is talking about boring-ass nature poetry and I'm afraid to open the horse link.
Unresolved lt? ANGEL/BUFFY/SPIKE (hint: it's all canon. BUT WHICH IS THE MOST CANON?). Which is irrelevant anyway because Buffy/Faith is the most interesting Buffyship.
Also now that Lost is over, I'm inclined to finally watch it
Angel/Spike.
But it's only half as canon as Spike/ Captain Jack.
Here we go:
""I'd say, [who Cloud likes] is all how you perceive the game. Cloud, as you know, is a very popular character, so I don't want to confirm the answer either way. Since the players have affection towards him, I want to leave it up to the players to decide who Cloud likes." -2002 interview with Tetsuya Nomura"
