Man of Steel / Justice League / DC films

I totally missed the trailer until just now. Looks interesting. I wonder if the Flash will get all the best scenes. Fast people seems to be the flavour of the month / year(s) of late :P. As for Icky Thump playing through out. It'd be nice if all movies had specialised music, but sometimes unoriginal stuff works. GotG's soundtrack I thought was brilliant.

So, in a first for me, I picked up the Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition, and I'm not sure if it was the rewatch or the added scenes, but this really does make a much better movie.

We get so much more context about Africa and why it happens how it does (also a bonus scene of Lois Lane randomly being a dick to Jimmy Olsen for daring to introduce himself)

Superman helps the bombing victims before he disappears, and Anatoly the Russian proves to be a first rate evil henchman, pulling off two murders and two abductions flawlessly, plus making a killing spree in Africa look like Superman. Seriously, If I ever put together an evil plan, I'm hiring that guy. We also get why the government guy won't go on the record, because that involves revealing that the CIA were about to bomb a village full of innocents (but in a nice bit of grey, the team they had on the ground were against the move.)

A lot of nice details I never noticed the first time, like how Bruce turns around the MMA fight by whispering in that guy's ear.

The actual BVS fight was better than I remembered, although I still don't think that was the Bat fighting at his best. Neither was Supes, but that's forgivable as he has no idea Kryptonite exists yet, so he thinks he has no need to go all out. There are a lot of things lifted from The Dark Knight Returns, but some of the really important stuff that made things work in that comic was left out.

We get Lois Lane and the Senator figuring out Lex's plan, making everyone look better as he had to work to keep them silent.

Great action (mostly), great soundtrack.

Weakest points for me as a fan of the Bat was that needlessly murder-filled car chase. You could argue that they're entitled to their own interpretation, but in the same universe where the death of Zod was such a big deal, you can't just go 'oh, yeah, he kills people now.' The only thing they had that was actually a threat to him was that one heavy gun, so it was unnecessary even if he didn't already have the truck tracked.

Other weak point was of course 'MARTHA', but on a rewatch it isn't as weak as it looks. Bat's first response is confusion/anger, he thinks it's some kind of taunt or threat, then when it gets explained he has a flashback to the loss of his own Mom. I'm not going to say that was well done or anything, but it's not the horrible mess the internet thinks it is.

Edit: Oh, by the way, one thing this film really needed that would totally be easy to have done

Have Martha be kept in a soundproof room. That would explain why Superman can't find her and also allow Anatoly and friends to not hear Batman coming

This is good to hear. I really ought to get 'round to checking out that version.

So I finally got around to watching Batman v Superman for the first time over the weekend. I bought the Ultimate Edition and, having heard that the Ultimate Edition is superior, I chose to watch that version. Mind you, I did not bother going to see this film in the theatres.

I have to say I am glad I didn't waste the money to see this when it was still in theatres. How do you fuck up a Batman/Superman film so badly? Fuck me, they could have just COMPLETELY ripped the story from the pages of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and it would have been perfect!

As it stands, I found the film extremely difficult to follow. In fact, I found it really laborious to sit through. The film bounces around so much that I felt like my head was spinning. I feel like I need to watch it at least one more time to try and tie everything together. However, I'm less than enthusiastic about giving this a second go-round.

There is absolutely no sense of fun whatsoever in this film. The whole thing feels dark and sad. For fuck's sake, they even manage to make Superman seem like a depressed alcoholic! HE'S SUPERMAN!!! HE'S NOT FUCKING BATMAN!!!

I very sincerely hope that Geoff Johns is able to turn around the DC film franchise because I don't know that I can do another piece of shit film like this.

I'm curious, folks, has anyone rewatched BVS since, and what did you then think of it? I had initially very mixed views, but on a rewatch it really, really grew on me.

Okay, how do I say this delicately. I am in no way happy that Synder's daughter died under such tragic circumstances. I'm sure Synder is a wonderful person, loved by his friends and family.

But man, I'm also kinda glad that he's off the film, and replaced with a director whose work I mostly like. I wish it had been under less horrible circumstances, but honestly, now I'm possibly going to watch Justice League without as much apprehension.

I don't think Snyder was particularly a huge problem for the films.

It's David S. Goyer :monster:

Feels bad though no one should have to experience that :(

I think they're probably at least relieved that if they did need to step down to focus on their family after this tragedy that they've left it in the hands of someone incredibly trustworthy and capable, such that they won't have to think about it and can fully put their attention on their loved ones.

Situations like this really hammer in why the internet (or I guess people) sucks massive dick. Really ruins your day when you see people on Twitter full on saying "She Killed herself after seeing BvS". Like seriously? ffs.

Snyder has always seemed to be one of those people the internet hates for no reason. I was bracing myself for internet stupidity immediately.Unlikely he gives a shit now, though.

I'll reserve any comments re Joss for another time.

Seriously, why do people hate Zack Snyder as a filmmaker? I don't think I've ever seen a film that he's been involved with that I would consider so fucking horrible that it would never grace my tv screen. I actually liked BvS; I think it's a better film than people give it credit for. Matter of fact I think I'm gonna watch it again soon. And I really liked Watchmen too.

Seriously, in a reply as non-biased as possible, tell me why people hate this guy.

And also, I cringed when I heard about Whedon's involvement. I haven't been a fan of his lately, mostly for how he's conducted himself on social media, but that's another Pandora's jar.

Idk why either. I've seen arguments raised but they are all kinda meh. At least the ones I've seen.

Watchmen : I've seen people complain that the trailers and Marketing were misleading and that basically all of the action scenes were in the trailers. Snyder actually went above and beyond with Watchmen to accommodate the action junkies by extending what little fights there actually were in the comics.

Considering Watchmen is one of like two comics in existence long thought to be "unfilmable" (The other is Sandman and it sure as fuck is unfilmable) I think he did an extraordinary job finding a way to make it work.

300: Anyone complaining about this 100% didn't read the comic.

Suckerpunch : Entertaining as fuck and chalk full of style. Idk what people were expecting he was just trying to make a live action anime lol. If you want to entertain some theory crafting and film analysis you could argue the film is pretty deep in the meta department and kind of craps on the young male demographic a la Kill La Kill style.

Man of Steel : As I posted awhile back in this thread a majority of the complaints people throw at this movie generally are by people who full on did not pay attention to the film and full on missed the entire freaking point of the movie.

Legitimately though the script work in the movie is terrible, but thats only on Snyder in so far as he agreed to work with said script. That's on Goyer for writing it and WB for signing off on it. The dialogue is very poor but luckily we had some great actors to help cover that in the film.

Pacing is kind of meh too but it's pretty hard to make a movie that could have been 3 fit into 1 film. Seriously, a Krypton movie, followed by young Clark , ending at the point he gets to the fortress of solitude for the first time , and the third opening up basically right away into a Zod invasion would have been pretty amazing imo.

BvS : Again scriptwork (Goyer) is pretty meh and it's clearly 2 films frankensteined together. Only watch the ultimate cut etc. Not really much to say about BvS lol It's definitely his worst but I've seen way way way worse movies get free passes all day long.
