[Mideel] In this topic I comment on all of the towns of FF7.

From a gameplay perspective, the only reason this place exists is for the Fort Condor minigame, which in itself is pretty decent.
Lol, I always hated this game. I'd just let the things attack and fight them in a battle. It's easier and doesn't cost as much money :monster:

ANd I love that scene in FFVII. I mean the thing's head is just blown to bits and it's unexpected. It's like shit man, that's power.

The Fort Condor mini games were great. Probably one of my favorite parts of the entire game. That was just plain fun. But yeah, expensive. :(

Yes, same - Midgar and Junon are my two favourites, too. I always look forward to getting to Junon, both times, and I often go back just to wander around. What I really love about it, aside from its visual awesomeness, is all the life going on inside - the soldiers' barracks, the shops, the bar where Rude is shooting craps, the guy in the harbour - and all the little stories and one-liners they have. It all helps build the impression that this is a real world full of people going about their business. Old Junon is quaint, but I'd rather have a top floor apartment high up in New Junon.

BTW, is Junon made of bronze? Or is that just an effect of the sunset?

Who in Square was responsible for designing these cities?

Junonian: My city is cooler than your city.
Midgarian: Fuck no, my city floats, bitch.
Junonian: Yea? Well my city can shoot giant monsters in the face.
Midgarian: *pwnt*

Junon = Greatest City Ever

Going back to Fort Condor. My opinion is that Shinra did want it back as if was their reactor. But it looks very old...possibly built before the construction of Midgar (correct me if I'm wrong).

It wasnt on the top of their adgenda until they needed the huge materia. And the population of hippies living in it. It was possibly easier to just allow them to stay rather than to forcefully remove them and have to do another cover up.

Possibly the reason why Cosmo Canyon still exsists with so many anti Shinra. Although they like to control everything, they have to let some slip through the net to allow them to show a public image of extending the hand to the other party.

As for the Junon cannon, I think Pres Shinra was just compensation. I mean yeah its a big fuck off gun....but it takes that long to charge and fire its sort of pointless. I know it took down 2 weapons and a energy barrier...but I'm sure that was never forseen as its use during construction

Really? Maybe it was meant for Wutai. :monster: It's obviously got monstrous range. :P A blast or two on a civilian area or military encampment from afar, and charge and firing time don't really matter - most of your enemy's probably already gone.

The Junon cannon strikes me as having a similar role as our world's nuclear bombs -- they are never fired because nobody wants to fire them. It's a last resort, but I'm sure that during the Wutai War that thing was constantly trained right on Lord Godo's forehead.

MOG, you have a frontpage account, don't you? Why don't you update the frontpage with this? Make it a bit longer and stuff and this would be great :monster:

Awesome front page post and introduction. I am very amused.

So the question is..do you want to keep this on the front page, or keep this on the forum and the front page, or what?

I think it should stick to the front page, but that's just my vote. :monster:

Nah don't do that, the discussion will die very quickly if it's restricted to the front page. (This is where I echo once again about Quexy's suggestion of having discussion threads for front page articles...)

Hmm..that's a fair enough point. :monster:

And at this point, I think our front page is now more than capable of sustaining itself in terms of comments and discussions.

Why not branch out? Why not add it to its own section? You know you click on FFVII and then have an area that discusses locations? I think that'd be neat and that way it won't get lost in news updates.

You could have like "If you want to discuss this, click here." and have it link to this thread. But yeah this isn't really news, I think news should be on the front page, and things like this should have its own sections.
Tres' articles should be in there too I think but maybe it's just me.

(glad you like my idea though ^_^)

I'm also for the idea of having Mog make his posts to the front page, but with a link directing the discussion here. Or to a thread specifically for it under the news. Might as well be here, though.

Might as well be here, I agree. You can easily disable comments on the frontpage as well, if you like.

Sorry guys, I totally had this Christmas party at my job, got drunk as shit, made out with one of my hot as shit coworkers, and slept on my friends floor, and had to go back to work the next morning (as in, today), which is why there hasn't been an update. As soon as I take a shower and uh, eat, I'll add in Costa Del Sol and Corel.

This is a great topic! I'm new here and this happens to be the first thread I've come across; needless to say, I enjoyed reading your interpretation on FF7's towns a lot, especially Midgar (yeah, nothing can beat that atmosphere). I always tought that one of the most striking aspects of FF7 was the discrepant world itself.

Anyway, keep up the good work :]

Sorry about the bit of a hiatus there. Uh...there's really no good reason for it, I got lazy. But I intend on finishing this! I'll kick it off with Costa Del Sol.

COSTA DEL SOL

You guys know Costa Del Sol is a real place in Spain? No lie, check it out. In Spain its more of a region, but I guess on that note, I always figured the FFVII version of Costa Del Sol to be a lot bigger than the game presents it to be, because well, port towns are historically usually pretty large (New York City, for a major example), and doubly so when it's connected to another big city (in FFVII's case, Junon). I figured if this city had a real life equal, I'd like it to be Miami. That would be pretty cool. It's a pretty modern city with a modern port, docks, helipad, cruise liner, sea planes, etc etc. It's pretty cool to see.

I figured that if there was ever a remake, the city would be a bit bigger, but one thing that sorta irks me about the original is how its sort of 'typecast' into a seaside resort image and little else, which is why aside from the villa you can buy (which would be awesome in a remake with more stuff added that you can actually DO with it (card games with Barret and Cid in the middle of the night, anyone?)), there's really not much going on and there's no reason to go back to it. It's sort of out of place in the FFVII world because there doesn't really seem to be any sort of national culture attached to it, it's a Spanish inspired resort town with a military installation on one side and a WESTERN COAL MINE on the other side. It's pretty weird, so hopefully a remake can make it more...fit in?

So basically that's what I think about Costa, I suppose. I like it, but uh...it's weird! What do you guys think?

Next up, Corel and the Gold Saucer!

I think you're an asshole for making us wait this long for an update. :monster: Lazy fuck.

Anyway, I agree with your sentiments about the town. Definitely feels out of place, but I can't help but like it. Part of the reason is probably the relaxing atmosphere. The music helps with that.

Like you, I like to think it's bigger than what we see and that it might have a Miami-like vibe to it. Because Miami is awesome and having something like it in FFVII's world would make FFVII's world more awesome.

Pro-tip: Don't stay at the inn before speaking to Hojo at the beach or he won't be there! At least that's what happened to me the first time I played through there.
