Well if its like resident evil then no close range weapons arent the best option. But if its like the Walking dead where you have to die first....

A good melee weapon is important if you either don't want to attract attention or if you're trying to conserve ammunition.

Still voting for the military person, access to munitions, a boat leaving yourself protected 90% of the time. You run in the problem with not having a lot of food/drinkable water, but you already surrounded with people trained to work together in high risk scenarios. You could dock and it wouldn't be any riskier than any other group of people going to raid for supplies.

You'd be fucked if the infection got into your ship though.

Just gonna point out, while I loves my swords (and axes, and spears, and knives, and cleavers... you get the idea) I would use them sparingly if ever on zombies. All I need is for the blade to bind up in the bone during a frenzied melee and take just too long to yank loose and get me bitten. So yeah, its primarily blunt objects for me in the case of the zombie apocalypse. My bokuto is an obvious choice, and I do in fact have some experience fighting with a shovel As a bonus, if (when) I break a shovel smashing open zombie skulls, that's just a bit easier to replace than a sword.

I'm still slightly torn on the firearms subject though, got a tossup between this lovely 12 gauge (I'd actually probably let Clicky have that one for close encounters) and this lovely little carbine my grandpa left me. Don't have a whole lot of surplus ammo in it's size, but lucky us there is a gun and ammo shop right up the road and we live in the middle of nowhere. So, we might could get there before panicky survivors empty it of everything useful
