New Ghostbusters film

Probably because it's easier to 'fix' by not casting someone non-white than it is to y'know make a good film :monster:

Anyway, I think it's all bollocks. There have been plenty of successful (and good!) sci-fi/fantasy films with female leads.

Comedy films? Not so much it seems. Bridesmaids was funny - or at least as funny as any similar films with blokes in. Though I wonder if calling it Bridesmaids was a good idea, because when I first heard about it I thought 'oh god that sounds like one of those shitty chick flick things'

I can't really comment on the Melissa McCarthy stuff. She was funny in Bridesmaids but the trailers for her other films put me in mind of a female Paul Blart Mallcop or something, she seems to have been typecast anyway.

Studio execs will take from F4's failure that it was because they made human torch black. Even though I dont think I've actually heard anyone complain about that.

They always take the wrong lesson from why something was un/successful

IIRC right when the movie came out the studio basically put all of the blame on the Director more so than anything else. It's why there was quite a bit back and forth between the two for like a week straight.

Why would you think Ghostbusters bombing means no more female leads?

I mean, it's doubtful that we'll lose any more female leads if it bombs, but it would reinforce the notion that shoehorning a bastardized version of diversity into well established franchises never ends well. The latest reboot of the Fantastic Four featuring a black Human Torche is a prime example of its failure.

It fucking bombed. Hard.
Why, you ask? Because it tried to change a franchise in order to appease a small group of people. What Hollywood is trying to force down our throats is almost equivalent to the Democrats sticking a Conservative in the presidential race and calling him Bernie Sanders. He may be Bernie Sanders, but he's still not The Bernie Sanders you know and love.
Please go watch "Shittastic Four" and come back and tell me that putting a White dude where the Black dude was would make a speck of difference in how much that movie sucked.

If the trailer had four male actors instead of female ones I'd still think meh.

This movie is being made by Sony Pictures who recently gave us the instant classic and masterpiece Pixels. <_<
(Which has 17% on Rotten Tomatatoes.)

My worry is the makers of this film will blame the all female cast if it goes wrong, that'll be the excuse they hide behind rather than admit they did wrong.

"It's not our fault the new Ghostbusters failed. We didn't make a bad film. The audience rejected the all women cast. Yeah that's it.
I guess the lesson to learn from ghosterbusters failure is that an all female cast doesn't work. We don't make bad movies. Everyone loved Pixels right?"

If the movie bombs it'll be because it's shit, not because of the female cast.
I want it to be good, but I don't have much hope.

Anyway; The new bright-neon ghosts just don't do it for me.

You just lose something with (cheap looking) CGI.

I sense an oncoming rant about practical effects vs CGI so I'll stop here.
The Force Awakens added the dirt or grit back into Star Wars, that's what I feel is missing from the trailer. It just looks to clean & slick.

Den dey done fuked up :wacky:

Less is more. It looks too processed & clean where the original looks more grungy.

Honestly, watch Spy. That's how it's advertised, as lady paul blart, but it's really, really not. If anything she's the most competent person in the movie, having to deal with other peoples bullshit and thinking that she IS just a lady paul blart.

The original premise is just as absurd, but I think the original doesnt go wacky, so it feels more.. normal? I dunno, I don't actually like ghostbusters that much.

The original Ghostbuster movie took itself at face value. We never see anyone in the movie question whether all the supernatural phenomena the Ghostbusters are dealing with are real or not until the EPA agent shows up and he's an out-of-towner government agent, so he doesn't really count. Everyone else agrees that yes, there's supernatural stuff going on and yes, the Ghostbusters deal with it, and very effectively at that. While the premise of the movie is crazy, no one in-universe thinks that it's crazy and that helps sell the premise to the audience.

What is an immediate turn-off for me is that I can't tell what era it's supposed to take place in. The costume design and ghostbuster tech-level makes me think it's set in the '80s, the same era as the original movie, but all the settings look like modern day New York and the humor isn't '80s era humor, it's 2010's era humor. So the setting doesn't feel grounded in the "real" New York, but rather a fictional version of it.

Also, it looks like the plot is making heavy use of the "someone non-paranormal is causing all the paranormal problems" trope which kinda falls flat nowadays because of overuse. This is pretty much the opposite premise of the original movie where it really is the paranormal that's the main conflict of the movie. Or, it looks like the "ghost" in "ghostbusters" is just window-dressing for the "busters" part of the name.

Oh but it does. I think if they had made Ghostbusters today, like a 1:1 remake, it'd be considered a naff B-movie. Actually that can probably be said about most 'popular' movies.

Actually if you take them at face value, the Marvel movies are naff and corny as fuck too, :monster:

I think people forget that a lot of the comedy in the original was improvised. All of the actors came from UCB, and worked off eachother. That film came together in the edit. I don't really like improvisation for the most part. It usually feels awkward. Try watching "Happy Christmas" :/.Even in Spy there is some awkwardness, but I really like what Melissa McCarthy can do.

Fantastic 4 didn't bomb because of racial diversity. It bombed because it was badly written and badly executed.

While the race changing of FF isn't WHY it bombed, I do think it's a telling symptom of why it did. And it's not because Johnny Storm is black.

It's because Sue Storm is white.

That movie didn't even have the goddamn balls to stick to its guns with changing the game. It halfassed it because it wasn't brave or bold enough to go whole hog. And that's basically the entire core of the FF movie's issues.
Nobody gave enough of a damn to go the extra effort. To take a chance.

I mean, we all know it was made just to prevent licensing rights from expiring, but not a fucking person gave a shit about that movie from start to finish that made it. I mean, I'm sure the actors gave it the old college try, but the people behind the screen? Not one fuck. Because they knew it was a spite movie.

I don't think anyone is paying enough attention to FF to take good or bad lessons from it. They know it's a movie made out of spite, not love.

Then there's the Jem movie which was also utterly terrible for not giving a crap about its own source material...

Are we talking about Jem as in Jem and the Holograms? Because that was always going to be shit, the source material was shit. The only way that could have ever been good I think is for it to have been a total campy pisstake. I say this as someone who used to watch and enjoy it as a kid.

Yes I am. And I'm not going to defend the original material as art, but it was blatant campy fun.
They tried to make it a serious coming of age movie without any camp. The movie has one hologram and Synergy is a tiny robot that projects home movies at the end of the film.

But Jem itself is not my point. Rather another example of relying on nostalgic fans to sell a film but doing things to arouse the ire of those selfsame nostalgic fans.

Just watch Josie and the Pussycats. Its the same basic film, but done with more campiness and satire.

Jem and the Holograms could've at least been slightly entertaining if they hadn't removed the lesbian relationship.

That would have required them to keep the enemy band in the movie.

Also that didn't get made into a full fledged relationship til the IDW comics.

Yeah, it's a better trailer than the US one, but the fan trailer is still better than both.

Let's see what some schlub on the internet makes of this one.
