So I'm curious, how is this game? I'm considering on downloading it.
I've never played anything with the
Dissidia title attached to it but, so far, I'm quite enjoying
Opera Omnia.
Like other 'FF All Star' games, it's core feature is about the novelty of seeing all the different characters - all from different incarnations of FF games - interacting with one another, and it is implemented really well here. Though not particularly lengthy, there are several little character nods and small story beats on each specific character introduction which reflect their time or experiences from the main games.
For example, Sazh mentioning that he has better Aim against the upcoming Bat monsters because of his pistols, or that 'all soldiers must be strong-headed' when encountering Cloud - in reference to Lightning. That sort of thing.
There is a general story about the endless battles between the Gods - who use warriors in their place - and the imminent collapse of the one tranquil world that was created expressively to give those warriors some respite. Distortions - or Torsions as they are known in the game - are threatening to rip this world apart, and those imbued with the 'Light' must stop it with the aid of Mog. But the monsters breaking through seem to have a purpose, as the story shows you a glimpse of Kuja manipulating and using the Torsions.
The gameplay is turn-based and is pretty neat. It works on a Brave vs HP system. The higher a character's Brave stat, the more direct HP damage that they will inflict on an opponent once they use a HP maneuver. The lower that Brave gets, the lower the direct HP damage output. Brave can be increased through inflicting specific Brave attacks, which each character has. Each character also has their main HP attack along with a character specific attack (which can either by Brave or HP) with an empty slot that shows more flexibility down the line.
Though the limit of battle commands might seem restricting, there are so many characters being introduced and added to the roster to keep things interesting alongside enemies which make use of their different areas of expertise. There is a decent enemy variety so far, and they all have some special moves to keep things interesting. Some enemies have Evasion raising skills, which is where Sazh comes in handy, or are resistant to physical attacks or susceptible to Fire, which is where Vivi shines. Heck, Vivi is pretty badass and he is on my main roster.
Battles are a fun tactical mix of breaking an enemy's Brave meter in order to then unleash the full potential of your main HP attacks, or just pummelling away at weaker foes with HP moves. Combat is fast and flashy and your three characters can also do a combination move together.
Unlike
Record Keeper, this game features no Stamina bar! You can play, and grind, to your heart's content. Only some of the optional areas with equipment and enhancement drops feature an SP stamina bar that recovers over time. For someone like me, who can only play a little bit each day but could blitz it on the weekend, this is fantastic. I'm not restricted in my schedule or available play time.
Obviously the counter-argument to this is that you could easily find yourself racing through the content and grinding to become overpowered - but at least you are given that option and not forced to stick to playing in limited chunks dictated to you.
So yeah, hope that helps. Definitely give it a download and a try. Really enjoying it so far.
At least this game's story's still heaps better than XIII and also a bit better than XV, and the character styles heaps better than in Bravely Default.
Just wish the Kingdom Hearts X/Unchained X/Union X had this game's style instead of what it has now.
Woah now. I will not hear a bad thing said about the fantastically overlooked
Bravely Default. I respectfully disagree with you on the character styles comment. The 3D models in
Opera Omnia are nice, but rather blocky and rigid. The artstyle of
Bravely Default however is beautiful.
