A staff isn't a very hard weapon to learn how to hold, unlike a huge sword or a gun-arm. So she'd probably just have learned how to use it because it's easy to use.

(On the subject of staves: the original UK English (and fantasy literature) plural of staves is staves, whether the American version is staffs. I prefer English, )
