Ok folks, for the interest of actual conversation let's start including summaries for the shows we recommend, these huge lists without any description of what the show is, ain't really helpful.
Let's also keep in mind that people are likely have already seen the more popular shows on your lists. Kthnx.
Kyo Kara Maoh!, or Kyou Kara Maou! (今日から㋮王! literally 'Starting Today I'm the Demon King!'?) is a Japanese series of light novels written by Tomo Takabayashi. It has been adapted into an anime series and a manga. The story follows the adventures of 15-year old Yuri Shibuya (sometimes spelt "Yuuri") (Japanese Kanji: 渋谷 有利, English Transliteration: Shibuya Yuri), an average high school student whose passion in life is baseball, as he discovers his future in a world where demons and humans are fighting against one another.
Preview of that review:
It doesn't help matters that the girl just so happens to be a vampire capable of roaming about in the sunlight, while everyone in her family (not counting her younger sister Anju) must live the rest of their lives in the shadows. Actually.. calling Karin a vampire is technically incorrect. She's a special breed of vampire whose blood increases, a blood-maker. Being a blood-maker means that she can live outside in the sunlight and participate in social activites like most normal teenage girls.. with a catch. Her surplus blood must be injected into humans through vampire bites, otherwise an ungodly amount of plasma rushes straight out of her nose like a rocket! What's a girl to do?
Despite how crude the show sounds by my brief description above (I try my best), it's actually really really cute! The relationship between Karin and the mortal Usui-kun makes for great entertainment, and the situations don't fall prey to the typical anime cliches that often plague this kind of animation. Sure, you still have the usual character archetypes and guidelines that are usually connected to romantic stories, but the fantasy/vampire angle helps to keep the show from striding into "been there, done that" territory. It is a story about a blood spewing vampire after all! How much more creative can you get?!
Tell me about it. Started off neatly pretty much like Bonen no Xamdou, but the end totally disappointed me. Was pretty cool though, watching Black Star in action.
About Monster, indeed, lee. :< I wish they did more stuff like that.
Check Planets, Earth Maiden Arjuna and Scrapped Princess, if you haven't, Dacon. Hatsu recommended me those too, but I've still got to see them.
How has no one mentioned s-CRY-ed in this thread . and even though you've probably seen them, I'm gonna throw in Big O, and Escaflowne. Also just for fun, Nurse Witch Komugi.
Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit) - one of my absolute favorites - is about a young man who struggles to help his mother make ends meet by running a fishing boat rental service. He discovers that he has a talent for boxing, and goes pro. The animanga follows his life in the ring and at home, as well as documenting a few other characters' matches.
Sure, it may be your typical sporting series, but it's definitely worth watching, even if you don't like boxing. It has plenty of action, lots of laughs, and some very interesting characters (including Ippo's opponents, most of whom are not the "evil bad guy" type).
Basically, if you liked the Rocky movies, you ought to give this one a go. You probably won't regret it.
I'm not big on anime, at all; which means my suggestions will either be very well thought out or very badly thought out.
Akira is about the only anime film I can stand to watch that I've come across so far but everyone knows that. The first four episdoes of Death Note are good but it goes terrible after that. The only anime I've really ever stuck with for an extended period of time was Slayers but I was young and foolish then so it may seem awful now. It does have a fair few comedy elements in it though to keep you satisfied and does have one of my favourite lines ever in it:
I'm sure most people have already seen these, but I'll recommend them anyway.
Howl's Moving Castle: Young Sophie Hatter is cursed by the Witch of the Waste, and turns into an old hag. Ashamed of how she looks, she flees into the hills where a moving castle roams the hills. It is said to belong to the young and handsome wizard Howl, who has a bad reputation. Within the castle, Sophie befriends the fire demon Calcifer, who promises to help her become young again. One catch: she must help Calcifer to be free of Howl, and Calcifer cannot tell her how. However, Sophie agrees to stay and try to find out about the contract through other ways. Still, Howl can see that Sophie is under a spell like Calcifer can, and he falls in love with her for who she is and not for what she looks like. Sophie manages to bring life to the moving castle, and she helps Howl to face his former tutor, Madam Suliman.
Princess Mononoke: A prince is infected with an incurable disease by a possessed boar/god. He is to die unless he can find a cure to rid the curse from his body. It seems that his only hope is to travel to the far east. When he arrives to get help from the deer god, he finds himself in the middle of a battle between the animal inhabitants of the forest and an iron mining town that is exploiting and killing the forest. Leading the forest animals in the battle is a human raised by wolves, Princess Mononoke.
Everyone needs to see Michiko to Hatchin, it's so massively real. All the characters are flawed, and everything is just so amazing. Animation is done really well, but not in a very anime style.
Digimon Season 3. I know, I know, a lot of people probably think of Digimon like they do Pokemon and YuGiOh, a kid's show. But Season 3 isn't like that.
In Season 3, Digimon is just a TV show and a card game like the real world. However, a group of scientists years ago attempted to create artificial life, which became real Digimon in their alternative digital world. Somehow, they've found a way to manifest in the real world, and this is being handled (not always that well) by Hyponos, a government agency dedicated to covering up Digimon. As well, a few kids come across Digimon of their own, and start to use them to fend off the real Digimon in battles, fighting using their own Digimon trading cards in tandem with their Digivice to strengthen their partners. This brings them into direct conflict with Hypnos, which is against all Digimon and sees the kids as a threat.
Like I said, it's not a kiddy anime, it actually gets pretty dark. One of the major characters, Jeri, one of her definining character elements (and arguably one for the entire show) is that her partner Leomon is killed by Beezlemon. And it's vivid two, you see, on-screen, his fist go through Leomon's chest. Beezlemon also quite graphically uses dual-pistols that look like real shotguns, and they fire actual bullets. There's minor cursing, nudity covered up by creative cel shading, and a big theme of the show is morality, and if Digimon are real or just AI programs meant to fight, etc.
One of the writers for Season 3 was a guy who wrote for Neon Genesis Evangelion. That should be a hint to the type of content you can expect.
Well.... My recommendations are mostly 'girly' stuff.
Still: Sailor Moon, Ah! My Goddess, Adventures of Mini-Goddess (an offshoot of Ah! My Goddess), Revolutionary Girl Utena, Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust: Vampire Hunter D, and Crest (Banner) of the Stars.
Nothing I have to contribute is new, I don't think - but they have their comedy, and the art is good, plus a good storyline.
EDIT: Since I think Crest (Banner) of the Stars would be one that may be new to you, I'll add a description/website for that...
Honestly, it's a confusing story - in which I'm still new to. It's about an alien race who take over the planet of a young human boy, and said human boy's elevation to nobility in this alien race's culture. He meets and is pretty much bound to this young alien girl (about his age, I believe) who is the one to transport him to his training. Galaxy wide war begins to break out around this time, and the two get sucked into it.
