Silly enemies

VII was definitely the last - and possibly the best - entry in the main series for completely batshit enemy designs. That's not to say they were missing altogether from VIII onwards, but not in nearly the same volume. Even today, when I'm playing the game, I'll sometimes come across an enemy and think to myself, "have I ever seen that before?". It was only a few years ago that I realised you could get into encounters in the mural room of the Temple of the Ancients, for example, and that's the only area where Doorbulls can be encountered (outside of the Battle Square, but only on disc two, and I usually leave it until disc three). And looking at that list now, I had to look up Killbin to check if I'd ever seen one in the game, and I'm honestly not sure I have.

I'll be disappointed if some of those monsters don't make it into the remake. Some of them, like Hedgehog Pie and Hell House, add a lot to their respective areas, I think.

hedgehog pie is probably one of the tamer ones in that list, it's just a spiky land mammal

like, is manhole a devil crawling up from hell, why does he look like a cutsie sewer satan

where did gighee get that vest, did christopher give him it, and is that a cigarette on the end of its tail

Now, if the remake had taken the route of going full anime similar to the original 2D art design, instead of the realistic style, then all these enemies could make it in no problem =S

Those descriptions were pretty hilarious.

But why do I not remember the pony?

Also, where is the triceratops tank?

I guess Hell House is that world's version of the platypus? Some higher being going for irony?

What's even more funny is that while a lot of FF games explain where their monsters come from, and what they are - FFVII's world is inhabited by all these weird creatures and semi-machine creatures that murder travelers and there's literally no reference, rhyme or reason as to what they are and why they're there.

I mean who or what made hell-house?
What's that Ghost Ship doing? Are they connected?
Are they all friends of Christopher?
Why does Ghirofelgo live in the Shinra mansion? How did he get there to begin with?

I've often said that FFVII is like this weird drug induced nightmare at times, and in no place is this more apparent than in the monster design.
What the hell where they thinking?
I mean, I love it, and it's brilliant - it sets FFVII apart from other FF games as it seems to have been almost entirely deigned based on a philosophy of how much visual crazy can we put into this game.
Awesome. Just how the hell do they plan to square this in the remake?
Probably just cut it out?

I remember quite a few of those but like Tenny, I'm scratching my head about the pony. Is it just me or does anyone else see a guitar neck with a lit cigarette on the end instead of a tail? :monster:

I love the batshit enemy designs :awesome: Like Tenny I'm wondering where the triceratanks thing is though on that list. Also Unknown 1, 2, and 3, where are they? Those are freaky as shit. :monster:

I actually think the realistic graphics would make these weird enemies look even more stupid and hilarious. I wanna see it so bad :wacky:

Also Howl, yeah that's a guitar handle sticking from the pony's butt :monster: I thiiiink you encounter those on the grass above Gold Saucer? I forget...

But why do I not remember the pony?

He's in the North Cave. In the area with the Magic Pots, and appears with Christopher.

Also, where is the triceratops tank?

I found this on the Wiki earlier about Gighee:
The katakana for Gighee (a play on 'Gee-gee', an insulting nickname for a bad horse) can also be read as "Ziggy", the persona of David Bowie, "Ziggy Stardust". The model is largely based on this pun, looking like Ziggy Stardust, and with a guitar for a tail. Both Gighee and Christopher use song attacks, and Christopher uses an attack called Stardust March only if Gighee is alive.

The monster designers were apparently these two guys : Shin Nagasawa and Tetsu Tsukamoto. Unless they died of O.Ds after FFVII, somebody please track these people down. They have a remake to work on.

Well I remember Christopher. Mainly because a random enemy named Christopher is, well, random. :monster:

I don't know why but this is my favorite random enemy.

I should write a front page article. "Ode to the Triceratops Tank."

In addition to a guitar tail he also has a cigarette on it. :monster:

No matter how realistic and gritty FFVII gets I am convinced that Square will be aware enough of how important the classic monster designs are. The contrast between the often serious story and the ridiculous monsters is an integral part of FFVII's humor.

If anybody is doubting this assessment, then perhaps they may feel less doubt when observing the monsters from this list that ended up appearing in Crisis Core: Mover, Hedgehog Pie, Dorky Face and Foulander.

Time will tell if my gut feeling that *most* monster designs will return in the remake is correct or not.

I reckon though that they will move the placement of, or completely ignore, the enemy "Sculpture". This enemy appears in the Whirlwind Maze. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ROBOTIC ENEMY EVEN DOING THERE?!?!?!

It totally fucking is! I mean thats a thing innit that guitar players do sometimes, stick their ciggie in the end of their guitar so they don't have to interrupt their jam session in persuit of lung cancer.

Hedgehog pies remind me of Critters.

Vargid Police are a pretty cool, almost 'normal' monster design. But what the fuck is up with that name? Is it a translation error? Or is there a whole Vargid society and we just keep getting into trouble with their police force?

Don't remember Killbins. But lol at the name.

I hope you're right . I hope they are able to keep some semblance of the game's silliness.

But I agree, Sculpture can go. :monster:

While there's at least a bit of a unique battle concept going on with the whole matryoshka doll thing, I think Grangalan belongs in the silly pile, nonetheless.

And, of course, you fight icicles.

Sure, its attacks are likely meant to be from a result of you breaking away at it (as it only "attacks" when you do, but the whole setup is definitely silly pile material).

Gotta also love some of the attacks, too.
In the Whirlwind Maze,
270
has an attack called "Bad Mouth", and it'll inflict Sadness on a character.
In one very selective, choice interpretation, it hurts your feelings in battle :monster: (But hey, not feeling your best will benefit the enemy)

I was always confused by it's name. As I always thought it was supposed to be a battery. But I guess if those are flames on the top instead of electricity it's supposed be like a little shrine? But why is it sentient? And it's attack to just sorta...tip over on you.

I really did appreciate the Grangalan's more detailed design in Crisis Core.

It looks like a remnant of some ancient civilization.
