It's always been difficult for me to control charcoal when going in for details. I was going for a more cloudy than smoky look but I'm not sure if it worked out.

Hmm, looking at the value studies on a different monitor has them looking really washed out with the darks being lighter than intended. Hopefully my settings aren't wonky or anything.

I took a stab at going beyond the sketch phase but I still can't get things to look as finished as I'd like (I do like to keep the pencil sketch but I haven't figured out how to emulate a traditional look with the coloring):

I try to get some sense of the personality of what/who I'm drawing as I draw, but I don't really have stories in mind - I wish I could think up that sort of stuff, though!

I've got quite a bit of sketchbook stuff. Sorry for the cell phone pics for most of them. My scanner is so old I have to hook it up to my old laptop and transfer files over on a USB stick, which is a pain; plus, the binding on the sketchbooks that I've been using lately doesn't let me flatten them out for scanning, so I don't really bother trying to scan stuff anymore.

Are you using just an orange colored pencil to do shapes before penciling in actual feature like the nose, eyes, etc...?

Thanks! Yeah, for the under-drawing I use an erasable colored pencil; I usually try to focus on working out the gesture, forms, and rough placement of things, but for tricky stuff like eyes and hands I'll generally try to work out the details with the colored pencil, too (or at least to the point when I feel more confident that I'll be able to draw in the details with regular pencil).
