Just got it and beat the first zone. Pretty good. Its exactly like you said Tets, the kneejerk reaction to the physics is "terrible!" And while still worse than the old ones I think, you do definitely get used to the different ways to get Sonic moving and all that jazz and seems pretty fun. I'm happy the brought back the stage clear song, I love that song, lol. And the extra life song, and liberal use of that 16-bit snare drum :monster:

Biggest complaint so far? Is that really the boss music? Seriously? It's so wimpy!

Have the designers never heard this song?

Might pick this up. Or I might just plug in my Sega Genesis and play the 2nd one.

I like the 16-bit snare drum, that's a nice touch. However, I think they should've gone either full retro with the music and actually make it sound like a 16-bit Mega Drive game or improve the quality instead.
Because overall, the synths sound like cheap 80s keyboards or something. I think a lot of the music could make use of better instrumentation.

And yeah, the boss music made go all "wtf is this shit". Of course, it gets more boss music-like after the first few hits, when Robotnik brings out the new strategies but even then it's not in the same league as the classic boss tracks.

I mean, just listen to Sonic CD's final boss music:

That's some major epic shit right there.

Also, I just got all 7 Emeralds and beat the game for the secret ending. It showed pretty much...what I actually expected. :monster:

Oh thank goodness. I just beat Lost Labyrinth. The whole time I was playing it I was worried that it would be Sonic 1's Labyrinth Zone boss, which might be the hardest in the series. And then the boss STARTS that way, I was ready to be very dejected, but then it wasn't :P

I ended up buying and clocking Sonic 4 on the same day. Admittedly it was better than I thought, but not better looking than an amateur creation that has just been released (which I can't be fucked downloading).

So I just downloaded the Sonic Fan Remix demo and while it looks pretty at first, I actually prefer Sonic 4's style. SFR is a bit too cluttered and distracting, although some of the background details are pretty neat (Robotnik's mech in the first act for example or the whale) and I wish Sonic 4 would have had more stuff. Just...not as much as the fan remix.

But yeah, overall, I think it's funny how so many people say it pwns Sonic 4 etc. The only thing Fan Remix does better are the physics. At least those are more like the originals.

It's ironic that after 20 years of video-game development, we're back to a 2D platformer. I'm sure it's fun and all, but if you want nostalgia value go back and play the originals. They should put Sonic to rest, imo.

I don't know if this is what you're alluding to or not, but I never understood the obsession with video gamers/video game industry that older styles/methods are bad and must never be touched again after they've been discarded in favor of the new. Progress and development in an aspect of design or art should ultimately serve to supplement what an older style can offer, not to replace it.

tl;dr, 2D platforming is the shit and just because other stuff is going on doesn't make it magically not fun anymore.

The 3D games mostly sucked, so now they have to resort to cashing in on cheap remakes. It doesn't say a lot for the gaming industry.

It's what the fans have been asking for. Honestly Sonic 4 isn't exactly what the fans have been asking for, but there's nothing wrong with sticking to what works and what people like. Lord knows that Sonic Team has had almost a decade to try new things.

And the 2D Sonic games have aged spectacularly.

I know this isn't necessarily your point, but I hate the Sonic fanbase for stuff like this. EVERY Sonic game that comes out, they bitch and bitch about Sega changing stuff. "STOP TRYING DIFFERENT STUFF, WE JUST WANNA RUN FAST."

And then Sega does EXACTLY THAT and the exact same fans then go "BAWWWWWWWW THERE'S NOTHING NEW!"

I just played Sonic 4 again.

The save file is copy protected, so it doesn't transfer over to other PS3 systems. Since my PS3 died a few months ago this means I have to start anew. No big deal, game isn't that big anyway.
I thought "At least my trophies are safe."

And they were. Until I just started playing it again for the first time since I got my new PS3 console...which friggin' RESET ALL MY SONIC 4 TROPHIES. =/

That's just a dick move, Sega.

That's weird...I wonder what would have reset them. They're not too tough to get, at least. Except that last one. I never go that far out of my way for trophies, and after 2 or 3 tries and I decided it wasn't worth getting through that stage without getting hit.

The problem is that 4th boss (when you're chasing him). It's tough on its own skill-wise. But there's luck involved too regarding where you are when he throws the massive bubble. Because there are exactly two places where you won't get hit. And if you're not in either of those to places when he throws it, you're screwed. (At least for the trophy)

The final boss's haters-gonna-hate-attack also needs good timing to avoid.

Also, seems like it was just false alarm. After synching the trophies with the server, they reappeared. :whew:
