Was it ever explained how (apparently) the First Order was able to take over / replace / the Empire rename itself so quickly after the emperor died and such?

I mean granted, I can imagine the Death Star and its protection was only a relatively small component of the Empire and if it had a solid government (it had a chain of command at least) then the remaining generals etc could probably take over easily.

Speaking of, I have a hard time imagining the scale of the star wars universe. How many people are under the Empire / Order's rule? How much is neutral?

It's never explicitly said, at least in the movies (don't know if any of the novels do say it).

'As much as the plot demands' is the one and only correct answer :mon:.

@Lucis Caelum – On that video.

"Can you import the aesthetics of fascism while kind of tabling fascist ideology so that you can sell _____?"

Yes. Star Wars has been doing that exact thing with the Empire since the franchise began. I don't know why she suggests that people somehow attempt to eschew the parallels between Star Wars and WWII, because I've never seen that happen... ever. Like literally never in any discussion ever in the entire time I've been obsessed with Star Wars. Everyone knows the Empire are designed after space nazis.

Also, the destruction of the Hosnian System in TFA was to destroy the remnants of the Republic that overthrew the Empire, and to have the First Order step into the power vacuum that was left behind to easily seize political and military control. TLJ shows that war profiteers have been funding them to maintain the conflict and refuel the whole event intentionally, because they'll be on top no matter what.

"Kylo Ren didn't join the fascists because he was seduced by fascist ideology. Kylo Ren is a fascist figurehead out of spite."
He was literally turned to the Dark Side by Snoke BEFORE the confrontation with Luke in The Last Jedi, or anything bad happened with Han. He was quite clearly seduced by the idea of being the next Darth Vader, and doing what Vader had failed – bring peace and stability by ruling the galaxy – which he achieves in TLJ. He's absolutely not in that position out of spite at all. He's there because he sees it has the destiny of the legacy of being a Skywalker. Luke was the straw that broke the camel's back, not the motivating factor. How the hell do you miss that?

Just like her Hobbit videos, it's well-researched... but far too-long, hard to watch, and obsessively misses the point several times, and then builds up off of that to an increasingly pointless and ill-thought-out conclusion.

In the new canon novels, the Emperor basically left instructions behind to blow everything up in the event of his death. The battle over Jakku was basically just a stage to destroy as much of the fleet as possible and leave an ungovernable galaxy in his wake. The admiral appointed to enact this however send the best ships into unknown space to rebuild for a counterattack and at some point some Dark Side guy called Snoke sensed them, went over there and took over.

I'm so puzzled about why even someone who really really really hated the movie, and even who is an asshole, would bother taking these complaints to some actor. Surely you know at least the most basic facts of the film industry and would have to know that the actors have nothing to do with the construction of the film?

I can see that idiot losers would harass Rian Johnson or JJ Abrams. But an actress whose name I didn't know until this story broke?

Agreed. I've been hearing "rumors" that she was done since TLJ came out -- but they're always from people who hated the movie, hate her, and constantly talk about some SJW conspiracy.

Allowing "Star Wars" to be ruined by bad writing (i.e. character and casting decisions they don't like) on her negligent watch because she's only concerned with paying attention to pushing a feminist Illuminati agenda.

Or so the insane grumblings go.

Mark Hamill on playing Luke in The Last Jedi said:
"It is tragic. I’m not a method actor, but one of the techniques a method actor will use is to try and use real-life experiences to relate to whatever fictional scenario he’s involved in. The only thing I could think of, given the screenplay that I read, was that I was of the Beatles generation—‘All You Need Is Love’, ‘peace and love’.

I thought at that time, when I was a teenager: ‘By the time we get in power, there will be no more war, there will be no racial discrimination, and pot will be legal.’ So I’m one for three. When you think about it, [my generation is] a failure. The world is unquestionably worse now than it was then."

That bit of his interview with IGN really sums up what I love so damn much about Luke in TLJ. Even moreso what with the current state of politics and other shit, it feels like Star Wars couldn't've chosen a better time to hit with that kind of message and imagery.

Hahahaha. I'm never gonna be able to un-think that now, Shad. It makes for so many hilariously bonkers references that I want to see a comedy comic about it that takes the whole thing very seriously.

That was a super solid video. +10000 Internets.

Also, as a comment on the last (pseudo-joking) comment about Rey learning things too quickly, there was a Twitter conversation that I can't find now that nailed WHY that is really well. It's that Luke's training was him constantly doubting that the things that he is being told he can do are possible, whereas Rey has always believed in things like the legends of Luke Skywalker, so she inherently lacks the doubt that continually held Luke back all throughout his training in the films.

That's the core difference in Luke & Rey's characters, and the "acquiring Force Powers" quickly. The Force has always been about potential and belief in that potential, which is also interesting when you take a look at Anakin & his abilities along with Luke & Rey and how their struggles are all different and where it lead them and is leading her.

• Anakin has incredible potential but is taught to fear that potential by the Jedi, because of both his age and the prophecy. He eventually falls when that fear and hatred is answered by the fact that the power that he's always wanted exists, but at a terrible cost that the Jedi withheld from him, and becomes a Sith.
• Luke has great potential but continually battles self-doubt about the possibilities of that potential in himself. He spends a great amount of time unsure, but it's in RotJ when he is confident, but still wary of the places that that power might take him if it's used incorrectly that he truly becomes a Jedi that overcame all odds to become legendary. Then he's confronted with his hubris and doubt, before eventually realizing that the most important role the Jedi served by existing was always to bring hope.
• Rey has incredible potential that she believed in as a story, knows definitively is real from Han Solo & Ben, but initially only rejects her own role in it. When she accepts that she has a place in all of this, she then rejects the idea that it deserves to fade away, because she believes that the Jedi are more than the sum of their collective deeds – which is why Luke passes on the mantle to her rather than letting it die.

How she goes on to define what that means in Episode IX is gonna be really interesting (and I'm still REALLY REALLY hoping that we get to have Force Ghost Anakin play some role in it).

^ FUCKING. THIS.

His performance is what makes Machete Order work so well, and brings out absolutely AMAZING emotions in Return of the Jedi when you see Anakin's arc come full circle. Watching Revenge of the Sith into Return of the Jedi is still one of my favourite things ever.

I really can't overstate how damn much I want him to be in Episode IX. It made me really REALLY happy when he actually showed up to Celebration last year, and got such a warm reception from the fans.
