Setzer is actually kinda fun to play as, even if slot is rather gimmicky. Looking forward to using different party combinations in subsequent playthroughs. I’ve hardly used Gau, Relm and Strago and I’d like to change that.

Looking for the rest of the party right now, and then I think it’s the endgame? Don’t know where else this game could go if it isn’t, unless if Kefka just nukes the planet into nothingness.

Having such a great time with this game. It’s pretty cool that something nearly three decades old is giving a bunch of modern games a run for their money in the enjoyment factor. The characters are some of the most solid in the series so far, as is the music. Very consistent in quality in both regards.

Apologies I haven’t been getting into everything. Again, I’ve just been having a blast and pulling myself away from it to write about it feels wrong.

Ahh dammit. I think I didn’t recruit him when I could’ve at a certain point, is that a life or death decision for him? Didn’t pay up like a cheapskate

Let's be honest and blunt™.

The game kind of armtwists you into leaving Shadow. We all left Shadow the first time, and anyone who didn't is a liar or used a walkthru. I did, on my first playthru, and the timer was right at 5 seconds, so if I'd picked Wait, then I'd have gotten Shadow.

But the box only says, and I quote:

"The airship's below!
>Jump!
>Wait!"

The game in no way informs you that Shadow is COMING, and after you make the choice, your only other indicator would be to step back onto the same tile and bring the box up again, whereupon its text changes to...

">Jump!
>Gotta wait for Shadow..."

I say again, anyone who found this by accident has my kudos; I would not have thought of doing that when I was 14.

What didn’t help was the fact that after stumbling my way through the floating continent, I jumped on the airship right before the Atma Weapon fight, thinking it was how I needed to progress. That led to me having to do that whole section all over again. I was not very pleased.

So when I did finally make it to the end, and it was 100% clear I needed to jump on the airship, I did it with no hesitation

Like any sane person would do, right??

Just imagine playing it in 1994. VI was peerless in its day, truly the golden age of Square. With the exception of Earthbound, I doubt many people even remember the other RPGs from that year. Lunar: Eternal Blue is the only competition I can think of due to the technology advantage (i.e. anime cutscenes w/ full voice acting).

Have fun exploring the second half. There's tons of stuff to do and lots of surprises.

Those dragons do not play kindly, yeesh. Think I need to level a bit. Seven more? Up for the challenge!

Think Celes is going to be my healer with a gold hairpin and Terra is going to be my black mage with two earrings in the endgame. Need to find her first, if she wants to hop aboard now.

Need Locke too, man. I miss that guy.

Yeah it's hard to say how "far" you are. Literally as soon as you have a party of 4 and the ship you can take the fight straight to Kefka. So, you're on the equivalent of Disc 4? But if you want to recruit anyone else (including new secret characters!) they have a side story, quest, or boss... so in terms of available content, you're on the equivalent of Disc 3? FFVI is wild, man.

Phoenix Cave might be my favourite dungeon yet - I loved switching between characters to solve puzzles. Also a dream sequence with Cyan and the three stooges? I uh, huh. This game is something else

Got Locke back, and got another Rachel scene. C'mon game, first you continue to throw the Cyan family stuff at me, and now this? I mean, I love it, but give me a breather!

Got the Ragnarok, freed Tritoch, killed two more dragons, got Sabin’s last (?) blitz and found Strago. About to redo the magic tower, this time with suitable relics.

A moment for the character themes in this game. Terra, Celes, Cyan and Relm all have some my favourites in the series so far.

Well not now. You've mutilated the Esper into a sword. :wacky:

You'll 100% want to get the Esper next time. It teaches you Ultima. And it has the unique ability to morph enemies into items/gear. Which is how you get some the rarest things out there.

You can steal a Ragnarok sword from Kefka and even keep it. Well technically it's not from Kefka, it's Lady, but that's neither here nor there. Just know you can steal shit from the final battle. :monster:

Kefka's tower is a nightmare. Think I need to grind out magic power espers on each character.

That last boss, man. I use the Carbuncle summon to cast reflect on everyone, and I still get nowhere. All of the relics I have on are either magic offence or magic defence, and I'm still dealing 0 damage on this weakness altering headache.

I know it's optional, but I really want to keep the 2x magic relic at the top of the tower. That and there's a dragon I want to get rid of.

and I'm too stubborn to turn away from a challenge

LMAO you mean the Cultists' Tower.

The Tower of Kefka is the final dungeon where Kefka awaits. You briefly got me worried for you! :monster:

Yeah, the Cultists' Tower is no fucking joke. Like, it's a challenge. And oh my God. I need to warn you.

You need to cast Reraise on everyone during the final boss of that tower. Do not forget this or you will regret it.

FFVI is actually a very hard game especially of you don't do everything, grind and get all the optional bonus stuff out there. It's a challenging game. I expected this one to trip up your usual speed runs of FFs, lol

Good luck and have fun!
