Tifa likes Cloud in spite of his association with ShinRa, the people who killed her family, burnt her hometown, etc.

Aerith- at least initially- likes Cloud because of the association with ShinRa, because he reminds her so very much of Zack.

So if we want to get on a woman's case about liking Chocobutt for SOLDIER, the one to chastise isn't Tifa.

Also she doesn't seem to find Cloud attractive or search after him, until she finds out that he's a solider, before that, during childhood Tifa and Cloud were neighbors to each other, and Tifa didn't show much interest in Cloud.

Why the fuck would she search for him? She had no idea he was even at Nibleheim, and as far as she knew he did NOTTA to ever contact her or their hometown after he left. However, upon her DYING all bloody and shit, who does she think of?? Oh, yes, Cloud.... And yet she had no clue if he'd made soldier or not. She just wanted him there.

And she had interest enough to meet him at the well.

Throughout the game Tifa voices her dislike of SOLDIER and ShinRa. "I hate these uniforms" on the ship to Costa and lamenting how soldiers LEAVE. She never wanted him to GO, she never asked him to be SOLDIER. Cloud told her he was leaving. She believed in HIM enough to hope he'd remember her and be a hero. It had fuckall to do with her having a hard-on for soldiers either initially or EVER after.

FFS, when they meet Zack's parents she's once again saddened at the idea of people LEAVING to join Soldier. That calculating, manipulative, SOLDIER horny bitch.

I'll never be able to take this whole, "Tifa only liked him because he was going to be in ~*~*Soldier" thing seriously. It makes me think people were asleep in front of their playstation. Or they've got no grasp on characterization.

In general, it reeks of accusing her character of only liking people for shallow reasons like, he's so cool and he'll save me! Its underlying theme is that Tifa only wants people to take care of her, or that she has no interest in those who are not strong.

Which makes no sense in the context of the game seeing as she deliberately throws herself in dangerous situations, not caring or expecting if she is going to be saved.

She was willing to stay with Cloud when he was in practically a vegetative state, wiping the drool off his face until god knows when. The reason she kept Cloud close since the begining of the game was to make sure he would be okay. She supports and raises two children that are not her own, and addressees Cloud's emotional turmoil in AC/C.

The idea that Tifa only liked Cloud because he would have been in SOLDIER is such a piss poor argument, it's embarrassing. Even if you aren't basing this off of pairings or who loves who, you should be able to grasp the general feeling of a character.

It's one thing to shipwar, or even dislike a character. It's a whole different level of WTFery to purposefully mangle said character. The sad thing is, almost all Tifa haters are Cleriths. It's all about the ship. If someone was like, "You know, I really just don't relate to Tifa, and I don't get her so I'm really not a fan." Okay, I can understand. Hell, I'd even take: "Chick is dumb. Don't like her idiocy regarding Sephiroth and all that." Something other than "bitch was only after Cloudy-cock because he was SOLDIER." No, see, there, you're confusing her with Aerith.

I'm kind of half way in this argument. Cloud resembling Zack was definitely important to Aerith, since many assume she still loved him (although she was trying to move on with her life). In that way, you can't divorce her initial thoughts on Cloud and her love of Zack.

But there's a significant difference between intrigue and falling in love. Cloud's mannerisms definitely interested Aerith. But they didn't make her fall in love. And the idea that even after Cloud changed to who he was, Aerith's consciousness still professes her love for Cloud (in CoL). I always felt that the final result of their relationship was only superficially linked to Zack/Aerith.

Thing with Aerith and Tifa is you can make the case for both of them trying to edge Cloud into the SOLDIER persona, Tifa because she likes the idea of Cloud as a hero, and Aerith because she likes Zack and sees him in Cloud. They each sorta want Cloud to be that hero image for their own reasons. Now, I don't think Tifa was trying to shoehorn Cloud into that hero image, anymore than I think Aerith was trying to shoehorn him into being Zack, but there's a basis for both schools of thought. I don't think Tifa was trying to make Cloud the hero she had fantasized about and don't think Aerith was trying to make Cloud into Zack 2.0, but if you think so fine, your claims aren't entirely without merit.

Now, a few things. First, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, because Cloud's growth from a selfish mercenary with false memories to a true hero is his character development. Tifa and Aerith both pushed him to stop being a dick and be more heroic and discover who he really is. Second, who can say with honesty they haven't tried to change they're significant other for the better if it would make them a better person? This isn't a bad thing though, sometimes you need someone else to see the good in you and bring it out. Thirdly, Tifa and Aerith both got over their desires to make Cloud into the man they want and love the guy he really is underneath the complexes and fake memories, so more power to them.
