You know damn straight that if Sephiroth had EVER died before the events off FF7 ever transpired than Cloud would've done a hell of a lot more for him.

Sephiroth was his idol, a hero in the boy's eyes, and Zack was merely a dear friend. You can't really compare a dear friend to an ideal hero. There was true luv between Sephiroth and Cloud god-damnit (before Sephiroth fucked it up by going to Nibelheim and finding out the true origin of his parents, thereafter going insane, and wanting to punish and ultimately destroy all of humanity).

And yes this means WAR!

And, look at the deep sorrow for Zack Cloud expresses in AC, and Dissidia! Ofc FFVII is agiven. Cloud stalked Sephiroth to kill him. Cloud screamed in utter agony when his hot lover was shot down right on the verge of Midgar, on that cold, stormy day. He was then forever tormented by the loss of his one true love, and decided to take his loves' place. He let his only true love live through him by becoming like him. He loved him so much that it litteraly drove him insane with lonliness and longing.

Sephiroth just got a black rock out of the deal.

Sephy's fascination with Cloud is purely mutual though. During AC Cloud was still hung up on the remnants of memories that Sephiroth presented him whilst grieving for his FRIEND, Zack.
