Interestingly enough I never broke my copy. Its still playable after several playthroughs, though by now the discs are a little worn from use.

But some people who would otherwise agree with you are turned off by the fact that FFVII gets more love than any other installment in the whole series. And some of the more vocal fans of it just make hating it all that much easier.

Well, it sounds like the majority of the hate is not caused by the game itself but by the fandom/popularity. Which is silly, but happens a lot, unfortunately.

But I know what you mean about preacher-fans who consider it the Bible of gaming and view any word against it as blasphemy. Every fandom has them and they always manage to give me a headache.

And that still means hatred of the game is unfounded if the the foundation on which the hatred is based is completely unrelated to the game.

If you hated the game because...I dunno, you think the combat is too slow or something, that would be founded (and you would likely hate most of the series). But to hate something based solely on its fans, while not uncommon, is still unfounded.
