Yeah I know how you feel. My computer case came with these annoying bright blue LEDs that illuminate my entire room at night and it makes the darndest noise while it tries to keep itself cool (even though I know for a fact that it's doing this without any problems at all), and thinking about the ridiculous amount of power I waste with it just sitting there downloading a couple files for 7 hours, urgh

I'd much rather use my laptop which probably uses less power to do the same thing, except my bro is overseas atm and he's taken it with him >:

Two words: Seedbox, . Or a NAS. I'd like to build or buy a low-power NAS or similar system with low power usage that I can keep on all the time. Hard drives will go into sleep mode when they're not used, using little power. It would be able to keep downloading pr0n too, if configured that it first tries to fill up the memory before writing it to the hard drive. Alternatively, an SSD for caching, and a normal (set of) hard drives for slower storage.

New policy restricting internets speech at work. At the recommendation of the store manager I'm going to be removing all references to the name of my workplace; henceforth it will be "a major retailer specialising in books and music." Additionally, this should be so obvious I don't even need to point it out but all posts have been representative of my personal opinion and not the company's. I mean come on, does anyone really expect that some bookseller dictates corporate policy?

There's plenty of people that fuck up, spewing bad publicity about a certain major retailer specializing in books and music even without realizing it themselves.

I had to sign something like that too. I am not allowed, if I recall the contract properly, to 'go into specifics' about my contractors or the jobs I do, . Corporate secrets and such, I guess.

Doesn't stop me though. Usually, when it's particularly sensitive, we are explicitly asked to not publish anything about it. A recent example (my first work day actually) is when we got to fuck around with a month or so of raw access logs from the webserver of a major online retailer specializing in books and music ( ). This can be considered privacy-sensitive data (as you can extract a user's preferences and search queries and behavior from IP addresses and such), so we were only allowed to publish about it after review by the company - I'm kinda sure that, in particular, we weren't allowed to actually say we were using potentially private data.

Still, we got some nice things up and running in a day, such as a time-lapse of purchases done, projected across a map (so you got little popups whenever a purchase was made and where).

@thread, almost constant / chronic neck and upper back pain, most likely due to constant strain, a shitty bed, and a computer job. Somehow it's unable to relax or recover or something. Maybe I should see a doctor, finally, who will most likely go 'yeh uh use less computer LoL!'.
