This blood (though I didn't have time to splash him with blood ), this sweat and these tears are for you, Octo <3 Thanks for all your encouragement and help and for generally just being awesome

As I said in the PM it's a "beta version" - there is tons of stuff I didn't bother to do yet, so it looks a little unfinished. The pose was a challenge to do, but I'm so proud by the fact that I barely used any references for this one. Which made all the worth it!

I refrained from commented because I thought Octo should speak first - but dammit, that's awesome. I love the shading on his face. Does it sound stupid if I say I really love the shadows and creases in his trouser legs and the shape of his shoes? Also, Octo's avatar as Midgar graffiti is very cool.

Not at all stupid, I really like the trouser creases. I have always enjoyed his trouser creases and Fangu has really captured them here

It does really look good in there, like LicoriceAllsorts says Also, the "A+R" is a reference to the Aviva/Reno pic you did but that is sorta vague and can mean anything you like really

No thank you! I've figured dedicating stuff to people is an awesome way to get stuff done But it's also nice to do something for good folks Now I feel bad that Licorice and Vivi got crappy pencil art, so now I have to figure out new ones for them!

No that's just cool and not stupid - I'm quite pleased with the left leg at least. The legs in general gave me the most amount of pain - and the mouth, which I still hate and was the last thing I did. Also, I had some light paintbrush shading going on in his face, but then I thought - screw it, I have to be rough here, and I made a new layer and just splashed on the shadows you see there. And now you love them This is the wonders of getting feedback Also, thank you!

Spoiler: Boring art rant for the interested

A have a few more notes about the process that are like fun facts:

- There is supposed to be blood on his feet, a little in his face and on the gun, but I ran out of time. Will add it in the final version.
- I screwed up the writing for the graffiti the first time, I'd shaded it and put brushes on it and darkened and turned and scaled and everything, and my bf says "is it really supposed to say 'avlanance'?"
-His pose is almost done without reference, and the shading and folds in his suit are 100% improvised.
- The bench he sits on was supposed to be rough but still high tech looking. When I think of it now it needs to be something wooden and worn out.
- The initial idea was to make him look much younger and a little more stone cold. Eventually he ended up a little older and a little more bored
- The gun was a pain to do
- The wall was originally dark purple, but I liked the reversed effect I did almost accidentally better
- I tried making my own graffiti first, but failed. So I downloaded a font.
- It took about 25 hours to do
- I listened to an awful pop record while doing it and I am not listening to that record for a long time

Ok that's all I can think of as of now.

Huh, you don't say. (And thank you!) There is something about line art - when trying to transfer it to colors, I lose something.

Spoiler: More rant

I thought the initial line art sketch was better than the colored outcome, or -- not better maybe, but it has a different expression. It's easier to 'cheat' with line art and pencils - you can use the tool to trick your eyes into seeing stuff that is not there - drawing is, after all, only about what the eye takes in and reads into something in your brain. For this particular one I tried 'translating' the line art into color, but it's very hard for me to tell what went wrong and what went right. I constantly kept looking at the line art, wondering where I exactly threaded wrong, and my conclusion is that it has to do with how the eye reads an image. It would take a different type of coloring: maybe less sharper colors, shading in a totally different way, sharper lines, thinner lines, I don't know... I'm very unexperienced with it and I need loads more experience.

I'll try to stick truer to the line art. I feel it is sort of cheating, but I don't have to make everything into twenty-hour coloring marathons I guess

Ok nuf rant, I'll try to produce some more instead.

Time to bump the club. Sorry it's nothing better than this doodle of 12-ish year old Tseng that I made during a staff meeting. The messiness is due to there being lots of other stuff on the page - notes and sketches.

Its strange seeing him with short hair. I was thinking maybe he spent his early years with a shaved head like the children in the King and I, and that is why his hair is so awesomely luxuriant as an adult

99.9% of what I draw is unfit for public viewing. Often I don't even know what or who it's going to be until I'm halfway through. But I spend a lot of time doodling (because I spend a lot of time being bored) and just like with that saying about a roomful of chimpanzees randomly banging out Hamlet on their typewriters, every so often something halfway decent emerges on my page.

I really liked what you said about pencil sketches tricking the eye into seeing what isn't there, Fangu. Maybe that's what I like about them? Line art is my favourite. I'd much rather spend time looking at Da Vinci's sketches for his paintings than at the finished paintings themselves.
