I think the modern Dragon Quest games do it pretty well. When you fly in the air, it's on another map completely different than the one you usually traverse on and there is no need to render most of the details on the map outside of the obvious things like landmarks.

As far as Chocobos are concerned, I 100% expect to be able to ride them for the Mythril Swamp. It would be a damn shame if this were to happen:

Cloud: "There's a chocobo! We can capture this to ride across the swamp!"
*fight ensues*
*loading*
Aerith: "Phew! I'm so glad we were able to get past that giant snake!"
Red XIII: "That was even bigger than Barret himself!"
Barret: "I'm getting real tired of your fat-shaming shit you damn cat-dog thing!"
Watch this be an epic cutscene with the Midgar Zolem chasing them. ?

There was a chat on the server recently about how there is almost no info on Cloud's father in the og....so now, years later, SE realise this and decide that it needs to be fleshed out. But why stop there? Cloud's father will be revealed to be special in some way, and Cloud will become 'the chosen one' in a glorious retcon.

Granted, Emerald Weapon's "Shape of Water"-esque daliances with Cloud's mother do keep the player guessing, as the game never ultimately answers the question, hence an often heated and deluded debate happens between teams #Claudiroth and #Clauderald for decades after, much to the detriment of community moderators' mental health and staff cohesion everywhere.

I had a dream that everyone in the party died except Aerith. The worst plot twist ever.
And then Aerith realizes she has to die for them to live and accepts her Fate.

That would be so lame. I'm scared about their "vision".

Her death impacted because of the surprise element; it wasn't a metaphysical thing, but a tragic turn of events motivated by pure evil... and nothing else. But this is modern SQ so expect it to be more convoluted than that.

I had been spoiled back then so already knew she was about to die, but I found Cloud's (and the party's) reaction far more impactful.
They just can't not do it again. We must get to see the reactions to that with REMAKE's newfound character brilliant performance.

They will, I am so sure that we will eventually get a quote from the designers along the lines of: "When discussing the plans for the new story of the game there was one thing we all unilaterally knew for certain from the start, Aerith was absolutely, positively, not gonna make it outta this alive."
I am so certain a quote like that will emerge at some point that I feel like I can already remember it happening in the future.
Hell, it's not even that I think Aerith will die that I think that quote will emerge, it's just that I am so certain a quote like that will emerge that I am so certain she's doomed.

I had another dream the other day. I can't remember the full details (my dreams don't have much detail anyway), but it was our first visit to the Northern Cave and everything was normal until the part where the mako cocoon came down from the ceiling to reveal Sephiroth. But it wasn't Sephiroth in the cocoon. It was Genesis.

And then Rude died trying to save Reno while everyone was scrambling for the Highwind. A lot of people thought that the scene was really well done, but I couldn't stand it. Turks aren't supposed to die dammit.
