This thread really throws into relief my confusion about what the Remake is going for with its Compilation references. Like, I get that even mentioning something in passing is enough to drive fans into an orgy of declaring that this or that must therefore be canon. But I also know how developers/creators tend to see these things. They've kept to morsels and breadcrumbs when the Remake presents ample opportunities to go all-in on Compilation content.

The subject of the mutability of canon relative to how seriously fans take it could keep me typing all day, but it intrigues me that the Remake kept the Compilation nebulous in places where it might've gone specific. So far, we've mostly had stuff that falls between plausibly deniable Easter egg (S and G cells, for instance) and something that could be a Compilation reference but could also just be seen as elaborating VII's plot (a larger Avalanche, labs under the slums). It's sort of like the "Final Fantasy X is definitely a prequel to VII" debate but, like, internally. I'd describe their approach so far as "cake and eat it" territory.

That alone is enough to make me wonder about Genesis and the entire raft of Compilation content going forward. I assume they'll get bolder about the Compilation as they move deeper into the Remake, but if they keep on their current trajectory, we might hear someone repeat an urban legend about one of Sephiroth's contemporaries and that'll be that. And I wouldn't hold my breath if I wanted to declare the entire Compilation canon to the Remake per se (I mean, there are already a ton of retcons to VII's world, for starters).

The references are subtle in their presentation but the Remake Ultimania and creators themselves explicitly state that the laboratory under Sector 7 is Deepground, the Headquarters AVALANCHE we see in the Remake are remnants from Before Crisis, and etc etc. The writers aren't denying anything about the Compilation lol They're just using the references and plot points from the Compilation in a measured way. They're only using what's appropriate and not just trying to inject randomness into the story that would unduly distract from the plot itself.

An urban legend on "G" being referenced by someone is about what I'd expect in reference to Genesis, and that's it. That would be the most sensical type of reference. And I wouldn't expect such a thing to happen until we inevitably come back to Midgar near the end of the saga.

On another note...I never understood why people would think Genesis would show up in the next part of the Remake when it literally takes place beyond Midgar, and goes further away from it. If for some reason he were to appear, it would be in Midgar where he's actually sealed up. It would make even less sense for Genesis to magically appear in like, the Mythril Mines lol.

No no, they're called "Headquarters." They're the "Headquarters" of AVALANCHE. No we don't see the location of said headquarters lol

They're the main group of AVALANCHE that Barret's group split off from. You know, the ones that came in and bailed out Biggs, Wedge, and Cloud when Shinra overwhelmed them. They're the ones that look like the BC AVALANCHE members, because that's who they are.

- Genesis is revealed as the real master villain. Part 2 actually opens with this revelation...we see Sephiroth kneeling to him, and Genesis turns and looks to the camera, then starts howling with laughter until he cries. Slowly the screen fades out and the title of the game appears: Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2: The Return.

- Part 2 consists of Kalm (fleshed out with a lot of sidequests about water filters and accountancy work) and Junon, and then ends.

- It slowly becomes apparent that the plot is now about Sephiroth ripping portals to alternate timelines to defeat the team. Every time they travel the Back to the Future theme song plays.

- The final battle takes place where various timelines all converge and Genesis has turned into a megaboss. Cloud teams up with Alternate Zack and Edge of Creation Roth to bring Genesis down.

-They mess up Jenova's whole naming scheme through a questionable localisation choi---ooooh wait.

(Seriously, though, "Jenova Dreamweaver"? Wha? It's not even a translation of the Japanese! Even if they were intent on localising the illusionist element specifically, "Jenova Conception" is, like, right there as the perfect wordplay.)

The new Batman trailer makes me want something like that for FF7R Part 2's trailer.

Cloud slowly walking through the dark streets, everything is very moody with guitar in the background, then we hear the voice of Genesis. 'Let's play a game.'

Cloud sees graffiti sprayed on the wall in front of him:

Fades out to a black screen, then we see 'Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 will arrive in 2025.....'

The plot is able to go any place, at this point. Even if Genesis is a mastermind or woke up in relation to some sort of threat, Sephiroth still hasn't abandoned his arrogance. The Edge of Creation Sephiroth is more humble than he typically is, but he's still arrogant, since he views death as a sort of humiliation and wants to avoid death because of that (According to "On a Way to A Smile?" or one of the compiliation books). Until Sephiroth can get over his arrogance and coldness, he's always going to be the villain or have his own agenda, imo.

Someone brought up this idea in the Discord... Skip the Kalm Flashback of Nibelehim entirely.

As in... don't shorten it, don't summarize it, just... never bring it up at Kalm.
