Van der Graaf Generator - [H to He, Who Am the Only One #04] Lost [11:13]

Fuck, I'd almost forgotten just how great this album is. This is only a slightly lesser work than Pawn Hearts or Godbluff.

Renaissance - [Live at Carnegie Hall CD1 #04] but he and Haslam were the foci of the music.

I'd have sort of have to correct that, Michael Dunford wrote/co-wrote most of their classic songs, even though he became an active full part member on The Turn Of The Cards album. Sadly he passed away too. Annie's still performing as Renaissance though, with no original members left.

I meant instrumentally. Obviously Dunford wrote most of their best songs, but to me the most impressive performers were Haslam and Tout.

Van der Graaf Generator - [Still Life #02] Still Life [7:25]

Caravan - [If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You #07] Can't Be Long Now / Francoise / For Richard / Warlock [14:21]

This is almost in the calibre of Nine Feet Underground as far as prog epics go.

Well for me L'aubergine Sangliers/A Hunting We shall Go also could be added to that list

Bolzer - Zeus - Seducer Of Hearts

I like how my comment on their live shows have butthurted some people at LastFM.

Yep, that's another classic.

This album definitely benefited from the viola, as did Live at the Fairfield Halls. It's an utter travesty that the latter wasn't released anywhere except France until 2002.

Another group that never really got the recognition they deserved :sadpanda:

This may be my favourite GG song, but it's hard to pick just one.

They're fairly well known but not on the level of Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, etc.

Gentle Giant - [In a Glass House #01] The Runaway [7:16]

Ofcourse they are second tier sales wise. Not sure about underappreciated though. Although there are many Progbands I'd rank above the first tier bands ( such as VdGG, GG, Magma ) I don't think some of the larger second and third tier bands are underappreciated really. :monster:

You could be right. I'd probably agree with you on VdGG, GG, Magma, etc., being better than some of the most popular bands, or maybe even all of them. :monster:

After thinking about it for awhile, I'd probably have to rank Magma and Gentle Giant as my top two prog bands. I'm not sure how I'd order the bands after them; I've got a pretty good idea whom I'd want to go on my list, but I can't even narrow down criteria for how to order them. Hatfield and the North only have two albums, but both are masterpieces. Does that put them above or below Genesis, who have four masterpieces (Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England, Lamb) and three near-masterpieces (Trespass, Trick, Wind) but quite a few lesser albums in their discography? And of course if I throw in progressive metal then that creates even more complications, because I'm not sure I can come up with a solid definition of what qualifies as genuine progressive metal and what's just prog-influenced metal.

It's all about how much you dig the material you REALLY dig. If I'd have a prog list Zappa would be above all obviously but he's too progressive to be prog :monster: Anyways lists are funny because everyone has a different taste, one can be pretty close (such as you and I prog wise) And yet very different. ( What's up with all the hipster Black you're into :monster:) Since human beings are usually such egocentric creatures very much shown in the internet era, there's always offence taken out of lists :monster: Which makes lists very amusing :monster:

Yeah, it's weird how our tastes in prog are almost identical yet our tastes in metal are pretty different :monster: After thinking about it I think I'd be remiss if I put Zappa any lower than #3 on my list, but after that I have no idea how I'd rank them. Enjoyment is such a subjective quality, after all. I'll keep thinking about it I guess :monster:

Gentle Giant - [Playing the Fool: The Official Live #06] The Boys in the Band [15:39]

This medley is just utterly amazing.
