What are you reading?

Thought I'd culture myself in some reading, so I finally got around to doing that with Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. It was a good story, but I really didn't like the writing style :P. Doesn't really flow. The book came with some background, having a 50 page foreword on the author and such, so it was interesting reading the historical context, and comparing it to today's events.

Okay now I thoroughly enjoyed Animal Farm because it read like a children's story but 1984 was like trying to ride a bike uphill through molasses. :wacky:

Dune and Foundation are on my wishlist. :]

I'm still reading Musashi and I just started (and am almost halfway through) Outlander.

I think Musashi has lost some of the original context in translation but it's an easy and engaging read. The female protagonist makes me roll my eyes a lot because she lives to serve a man, but that's my only gripe.

Outlander is holding my attention because DG is a good writer (so far), but I can't relate to the main character at all and she's dreadfully boring.
The woman's traveled back in time and makes no mention of her struggles involving the lack of common conveniences like plumbing and mooncups.

I'm hoping to pick 1984 back up soon - it's been a while since I read it, and I can safely say I fully appreciate the extent of your description. I might've been reading it at the wrong time though (I was kind of force-feeding to myself for college), so maybe a reread at a more leisurely pace will be better

Steven Erikson - Deadhouse Gates. I feel like I understand only roughly half of what is going on in any of these books (which is intentional on the author's part), but the world and lore are intriguing enough that I feel compelled to keep reading.

In between that I'm also re-reading Foundation. I feel kind of proud that I've actually read half the works on X's list (the first four and 1984).

Last fantasy / sci-fi thing I managed to read was Dune, which got kinda tl;dr eventually; the book goes from a sci-fi classic to a post-human thing (?) to some kinda philosophy treatsy. Spans quite some time, too, which I likes. IDK if that was all Frank Herbert or in part by his son though, IDK where the border lies. I stopped when it went from regular books to history / world books or whatever those were.

I should do Foundation. I started re-reading the last GoT book but either I lost interest or I can't read long text anymore. Although the last GoT book wasn't actually that great, IIRC.

I can't wait to get my hands on Wraeththu.
Among mannnnny other books. One of my hobbies is reading summaries/reviews on Amazon and adding kabillions of books to my wishlist. :monster:

When I finally buy a book and get halfway through I go "ho hum ho hum I wonder what everyone else thinks of this" and I scour Amazon's reviews for spoilerific conversations, totally ruining the ending of the book for myself. E-v-e-r-y time. :wacky:

I feel like I started reading Dune a long time ago...In fact, I'm sure I started reading it (the memories are coming back to me) but it lacked that special magnetism that keeps a person glued to the pages of a book. I feel like I might be able to conquer it nowadays.

I believe next up (since I already bought all three books eons ago) is The Sevenwaters Trilogy.

Aaaand tomorrow I'm making a trip to the dollar bookstore. <3

About to finish book 3 of A Pattern Of Shadow & Light. Despite the plot just feeling very much 'been there, done that' it's really difficult at this point not to get invested into the characters that you've grown with for all this time. I know what she was trying to do, but the whole 'balance' and 'paths' concepts are really annoying though.

Ooooh I saw a wee bit of that a while back. IIRC I follow the arteest on DA. It's very beautiful. Thank you *so* much for reminding me of this. I've gone and had a poke around the artist's website and I think this is one of the things I'm going to get with my burfday monies (hard copies of the work, that is). ^.^

Yeah, her art is super beautiful, Howl. To be honest when I first came across her manga a while back, I didn't get into it, but I saw one of her illustrations again recently, was reminded of the comic, and when I went back to read it this time I really got into it.
Getting a hard copy would be so nice; I'd feel good knowing I helped support an artist like her. ^,^ Ooooh and if you do get some of the volumes, you should take a pic and show it off; I wonder how big they are?

There are some pictures of the actual books on the artist's site (Idk if it's a guy or girl :wacky:) and they are 5"x7", about 130-160 pages I think. I do believe I'm going to buy the complete works, which is all four mangas out so far and the artists's first artbook (all signed). ($70 + $5 shipping).

I usually read newspapers and magazine daily. Today I have kept the routine alive as well. :)

I have almost completely lost interest in fiction, which is sad because it used to be the thing I lived for.

I recently read "Man's Search for Meaning" for Victor Frankl, which was one of the big ones on the Holocaust that I hadn't previously managed to get my hands on. The hope and positivity that suffuses his experiences is awe-inspiring.

I'm not currently reading anything (the book about clouds is gathering dust) but I will post this gif anyway. :D

Joe Abercrombie, Half the World. Opens with the sole girl in a class of trainee soldiers trying to get into the army and being set an unfair final exam by the armsmaster. Sigh. Rest of the book is okay so far, but is there some by law I don't know about about where this has to happen in order to publish a novel where a woman is trained to fight by an institution?

Aw, that's a shame. Are you just burned out from reading too much of it, or is it something in the fiction itself?

Re-reading LOTR <3

How's it going? I remember rereading it before and being surprised by how good it was, because a lot of the things people parody about LOTR type fiction aren't actually in it.

Where do whores go? :monster:

I actually liked the book, not as much as the third one, but I still enjoyed reading it. It is insanely long though.
This is why it takes him five years to write the next one. :monster:

It's part two of something that turned too tl;dr to fit in one book, that's for sure. I guess he just went "Ehh let's just add loads of shite to this one too, loloo". He's too busy signing shit and approving / not disapproving radical changes in the TV show to be writing nowadays, :monster:

Just finished all four parts of the Evermen Saga by James Maxwell.

A nice light fantasy read. Not something that's going to stay with me for a long time, but I enjoyed some of the characters and the 'lore' aspect.
