What time is it?!

Anybody else still keeping up with this?

I am! Betty was an interesting episode... but made it once again painfully clear that Adventure Time realllllllllllllllllllllly needs to be expanded to a 22min slot rather than 11min. Everything was like on speed once the first few minutes passed.

I like how things both did and didn't go back to status quo (something the show does a bit too much....well 99% of cartoons are guilty of this....I think mainly due to pressure from the networks to not change much).

Kinda, but kinda not, too: Finn's not the only human on Ooo anymore.

Also, I didn't mind the pacing because it gave a real sense of urgency to the fact that Simon literally has no time without the magic of the crown keeping him alive.

This happened today in the episode "Jermaine"

tumblr_nnaq923RBX1r9yteuo1_1280.jpg

This scene Jake walks in carrying it saying, "Hey Jermaine, this thing is rad--woooah!" and falls forward, slicing the table in half (which they duct tape back together).

Also, it isn't just that brief scene. Jake keeps unsuccessfully trying to wield it to hilariously ineffective result, which includes this conversation:
• Jermaine, "That sword's too unwieldy, man…"
• Jake, "But it'll look decent when I triple combo this bozo with this thing, right?!"
• Finn, "Like how?"
• Jake, "Like this bro!!"
*lifts the Buster Sword up and falls over backwards*
(miscellaneous fighting as Jake tries to stand up and falls over again)
• Jake: "Ooof! -- WHY IS THIS THING SO DENSE?!"

It starts back up again soon, and there's also an 8-part miniseries, called "Stakes" that's about Marceline's complete past, and some information came out about it at NYCC, perhaps the most awesome part is that Rebecca Sugar (who worked on the show, and wrote all of Marceline's music, but left after a while to start Steven Universe) is going to be back as Marceline's mother.

I can't believe it's ending :/ I feel like a second childhood is ending... it's kind of weird knowing that as I get older, I'm probably going to have this feeling again :(

While I liked some aspects of the finale.... I can't help but feel disappointed by it. Rushed and disjointed at times. I mean I know they had three episodes to wrap multiple plot points up, and that's more CN's fault for cancelling AT then the writers.... I just wish things had more time to be wrapped up better.

Sure there're unresolved plot threads to certain things, but that's kind of the point. We're just looking at their stories in a world that's much larger and continues on long after them, and their tale doesn't have an "end" per se. They're not on a quest to destroy a ring or something that'll provide finality, and like Simon says when it seems like they're gonna die – is that nobody chooses how they get to go out, it just... happens. This episode really takes that message and delivers it well, which is WHY I like it. By having a more dense summary of that conflict delivered by BMO, it was also showing how things for the story have moved in perspective from "happening" to "happened" even in the telling of the episode itself. It's a framing device that helps to show why the show doesn't explore everything it introduced, because much like life – there isn't a point where it's written to end. I don't feel like there was anything that was absolutely necessary to close the door on that got left behind. I haven't binge-watched through the last season into the finale, so YMMV but I don't feel like there was anything that more time would've really fixed.

On a loosely-related note, the AT panel from SDCC this year's really good & they talk lightly about the finale:

Both of Rebecca Sugar's songs absolutely hit my right in the feels.

Adventure Time is definitely worth diving into now that it's wrapped. It starts REALLY wacky and feels more like miscellaneous vignettes that slowly start to stitch together into a bigger picture until it delivers everything to a comfortable stopping point. You'll notice that that focus changes around the time Pen Ward stepped back from it, but I wouldn't say it's negative at all. Just something you'll notice, like when there's less music because Rebecca moved off to do Steven Universe. It's got a damn special place in my heart for certain.

Announced on the 6 year anniversary of I Remember You:

The new Adventure Time: Marcy & Simon series will run for 6 issues, and will be written by Olivia Olson (Marceline on Adventure Time) and drawn by Slimm Fabert (Adventure Time comic series). The new series is set to hit in January of 2019 and will take place after the show's series finale as Marceline aims to help Simon in his quest to atone for his previous time as the Ice King.

"After the events of the Adventure Time™ series finale, Marceline and Simon have finally reunited! Now together, Simon asks Marceline for help in making amends for his time as Ice King, which leads them, Finn, and Jake on an adventure with so many twists and turns, even our skilled heroes have a hard time keeping up!"

“Craziness and wonder aside, the best thing about Adventure Time™ is the show’s ability to make you feel,” said writer Olivia Olson. “Great storytelling can punch you in the gut with laughter, tears or ‘Woah, me too.’ Playing Marceline for the past 8 years has taught me a lot about myself. Besides the whole, demon/vampire post-apocalyptic childhood, she and I have all too much in common. Some of that will definitely come out in this series. I want to thank Cartoon Network and BOOM! Studios for the opportunity to keep these characters story going. I hope to do our queen proud and keep the spirit of Adventure Time™ alive undead.”

“Marceline's history with the Ice King is honestly my favorite part of Adventure Time™, so I feel very lucky to get to work on a comic that explores their relationship in the present,” said artist Slimm Fabert. “Olivia's script is excellent, and I'm very excited to see where the story goes from here.”

This will be Olson's third time writing in the Adventure Time world, as she previously collaborated with her father Martin Olson (Hunson Abadeer) on The Adventure Time Encyclopedia, as well as co-authored Adventure Time: The Enchiridion and Marcy's Super Secret Scrapbook. Now she gets to lead Marceline and Simon on a whole new adventure.

“There’s a lot of reasons to love the world of Adventure Time™, from the unforgettable adventures to the surprises around every corner, but it’s the characters who leave a permanent mark on every fan. And when it comes to favorites, there’s few more beloved than Marcy and Simon,” said Whitney Leopard, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “It’s an honor to have Olivia, the one and only voice of Marceline, join us to bring these new stories to life exclusively in comic book form alongside the amazing visuals created by Slimm. This series is a treat for every Adventure Time™ fan who wants to know what happened to Marcy and Simon after the epic Cartoon Network series finale!”
