How are we conducting this imaginary poll anyway? Are we asking people, "Do you know who Master Chief/Lara Croft is?" Or are we showing them a picture and asking "Do you know who this is?" Or if its the latter, is it merely "Do you recognize this character" with no need for an actual name?

Going with the picture method, I would imagine more people would recognize a picture of Master Chief but only know that its from Halo, rather than its Master Chief. But if they recognized Lara, they would probably know her name (moreso, perhaps, than that its from Tomb Raider).

This of course, raises the issue of which of Lara's various forms do you show people...

Additionally, Halo 3 sales made news worldwide with the midnight queues (the same way Harry Potter sales did)

But never did I see one that mentioned Master Chief's name, it only ever said Halo 3.

With gamers over 13 who are not douche bags. Laura is more famous.

With little dipshits on X-Box live.....

Ouch, I got called a douche bag,

I agree with Dacon, though - there are plenty of people who older than 13 (or 6 :P) who prefer the Master Chief... different genre-preferences can be one reason...

And most of the strangers I meet on XBL playing Halo definitely sound like they're over 13...

The main point here is that it's not a fair comparison - Tomb Raider is character-based, you play a character with a story, a voice, a face, epic breasts, etc. Halo doesn't have that - what do you know about MC? How much do you see him? What is he besides a green suit?

At least you get to see Lara's ass all the time in TR. MC doesn't even have an ass, he's most likely a robot or something lame like that.

What are you talking about Forcestealer?

That's kinda irrelevant. It's a question of how many people fully know who Lara Croft or Master Chief, is? You're thinking about that way too seriously. :monster:

It's a question of how cemented they are in pop culture, and honestly, I'd say right now, they both are. And Master Chief will only get cemented further.

Master Chief isn't as characterized as Lara Croft in terms of the story, but the sheer popularity and gameplay of Halo makes you identify with him, and Halo *Does* have a story, for what its worth. You're given a glimpse of what Master Chief is like, and while his story isn't quite as character driven as Croft, he's still able to be known.

The character is fleshed out more than Lara in the books.

And no he's not a robot.

Anyone who games as a hobby, or seriously know who both Croft and the Chief are. But Master Chief has a larger fanbase by far. It's fucking huge. HUGE. That's why people bitch about it being so popular and hate the fanbase because someone always defends the game when it's called shit.

Tomb Raider isn't that character based. Lara is a vehicle for the game just like Chief is. Halo is story based as well.
But Halo has best selling books and shit, and comic books that flesh out the game's plot and characters.

Fall of Reach is an awesome book.

thank goodness

But yeah, Halo's fanbase is absolutely gigantic. And like we said, he has very good selling books, comic series, and everything. And yeah, Fall of Reach was awesome.

Fully? I thought it was a question of how "famous" they are, that is, how recognizable they are as characters from a game.

It's not a question of preference or who is more popular, but who' more famous/recognizable.

Character development is also kind of irrelevant. Sonic has 4(?) television shows, a long-running comic series, and several [bad] in-game stories. But my dad would have no idea about any of that, he just knows the character.

Master Chief headlines in the news every now and then, he gets awards up the wazoo, almost every knows who plays games knows who he is, even people who don't play games are aware of the character, either through the books or the comics.

Hell, my mother bought Fall of Reach and enjoyed reading it and now she knows who he is, then she recommended the book to friends.

Tomb Raider never had a gigantic fanbase like Halo did.

And yeah I've read the tomb raider comics, I even have a lot of Hughes' cover art from it. They just don't add much to the franchise. Sales weren't spectacular either.

And Master Chief is definitely recognizable. I don't see how he isn't. He's definitely cemented into people's consciousness. There's no denying his popularity.

Lara Croft is a gaming icon, but her heyday has past. She's nowhere near as popular as she was back in the nineties. Right now, its Halo's time.

Lara Croft appeared in Playboy. Master Chief hasn't, as far as I'm aware. Clearly, you can tell who's more popular. :awesome:

Of course he's recognizable, who's denying his popularity? I just think a larger percentage of the population could identify Lara Croft by name. I also think a larger percentage than that would recognize Master Chief as "Halo" or "from Halo," but not necessarily "Master Chief" which think makes him less "famous."

Uh, I doubt many men want to fap to Master Chief.

And I think its bullshit no one would be able to identify Master Chief. That's undercutting his popularity, A LOT. If Master Chief can appear in Time Magazine, I think he's popular enough to be identified on sight.

The Halo fanbase is the larger percentage that knows who the character is. If you argued that a larger percent of the population doesn't know him, they'd be people who don't give a shit about games at all. Lara's movies sure as hell didn't make her anymore famous than the games did.

If MSNBC knows who Master Chief is, then I don't think a lot of people would call him Halo :awesome:

He's not saying no one, but there ARE a shit ton of people (who also play the game a lot) who just know MC as 'that guy from Halo'.

That's not really a lot of people compared to the audience that DO know who he is though.
