YOU'RE MINE, MAKO. YOU'LL NEVER BE ANYONE ELSE'S!

But I also agree that no one who owns Halo doesn't know his name, but does the majority of the population own Halo?

Yeah, but the amount of people who buy the game and not play half of it is in the minority.

And the campaign is multiplayer too, always has been.

Ugh no Halo movie plz. God knows it'd be just as bad as the Doom movie or the Tomb Raider movies. :shifty:

When I say multiplayer, I mean the multiplayer multiplayer, not the campaign.

But like I said, there are a lot of people who buy the game and the game is shared between brothers, girlfriend (in my case), household, frat houses, roommates, etc. I can tell you that a lot of those people aren't quick to recognize MC by name.

I try to forget the Doom movie even exists.

@The Notorious M.O.G.

And how the fuck does that happen? Do they play while high or drunk? Do they not read the package? Do they not read any sort of video game magazine, blog, review site, or anything? I seriously want to know how you can go into gaming culture, specifically regarding X-Box/Microsoft and be completely ignorant of the name of the main character, especially when its said in the game proper. Especially with a simplistic name as "Master Chief."

I thought the Halo movie had been canned? I don't know if I should be happy or sad...

And yeah, going through people's service records on Halo 3, you'll find that most people have at least started the campaign. And they don't have to know the character in depth, or understand the little details like whether he has freckles, or what color his hair is, for him to be a gaming icon. I'd say if you sat through the opening scenes where he crash-lands, where he's found, and where Johnson tells him he's gonna die jumping off stuff one day is good enough to "know" he "exists". :D

You don't even have to know his name is John. The "Master Chief" is enough. ^_^

Yeah both of which didn't make the franchises anymore famous than they already were.

If anything it made them think badly of the games.

Exactly. Unless you've somehow never seen the opening movie of Halo, there's no way you cannot know who Master Chief is.

That's of course excluding the numerous reviews, commentary, game magazine coverage, and all the other shit that just shoves Master Chief's name and character down your throat.

@Ninra

You're sadistic, you know that?

Although I'd rather watch all of Doom, Super Mario Bros, and Mortal Kombat right after another than watch...Alone in the Dark even once.

Also there are shittons of people that actually play through the whole campaign, and skip through the cutscenes.

For better or worse I know people do this because to my chagrin when I watch someone play or play with them, people have pressed (whatever) button to skip through cutscenes in games ever since I was a little kid.

Even so they were still more famous after the movies. Well, at least in the case of Tomb Raider. Doom gets enough bad press from school shootings to be famous without the movie.

And Mako, if I showed Halo's opening movie to my mom, she wouldn't think that's the character's name (which it essentially is), she'd just think its his rank. And he looks the same as everyone else, so if some showed a picture to her she'd know it was from Halo but not what his name is.

FYI on the Halo film: The director (not sure about the rest of the crew) worked on and is releasing a film called District 9 this summer. I forget the synopsis of it, but I think it's loosely similar to that of something along the lines of Halo. Iirc, if this movie does well, they may reconsider doing the Halo film.

Not the first time through.

This's been discussed to death through the fandom, and most people watch them at least once.

Well then if you're skipping cutscenes without even watching them once, you're insane. You should fucking watch it once if you paid for the damn game. That's so silly. I don't think that's a majority or even significant minority MOG. How the hell would he be this iconic and popular if there were a good portion of people who didn't even know his name? That's just bizarre. His name is easy as hell to remember. MASTER. CHIEF. It's nothing complex.

@Force Stealer

Interesting point, but if she stuck around for a bit more, or read some other stuff regarding Halo like the manual, some magazine coverage, or the like. It'd be easy to see he's just...Master Chief.

I'm sure, but this mostly applies to people who bought the game and are interested in it, not everyone who plays it.

A lot of people who play the game didn't pay for it. A lot of people are just. not. interested.

Only if she's interested.

Being not interested in something is a powerful thing. I have had tons of information given to me through people, school, books, etc that I haven't retained simply because I'm just not interested in it.

A few more people knew about the games after the movies, but compared to the widespread popularity of the games, both Tomb Raider and Halo, it's a joke.

The games are known widespread, among millions of people, some gamers some not. Denying that is silly.

The people who bought the game and are interested in it are the majority of the people who played it. It's highly unlikely that anyone who has played the games doesn't know who the chief is. As in, cannot place his name to his appearance.

Also, who buys a game if they're not interested in it?

Man I hate it when they do that...

... But even then, the marines keep calling out to you - "Chief!" or "Arbiter!" - whichever you play as, during normal game play... (At the very least, from the grunts, you'd know yourself as the demon or the heretic. :P) So even if you keep skipping all the cutscenes, you'd know you who you were, unless you were very daft, or very drunk, or both. :awesome:

I bought Halo 2 when I was in high school and my entire household liked it. Only me and my brother actually gave any damn about the story. Conversely, the same now applies with Halo 3 and my girlfriend. Yeah, you can BUY the game and be interested in it, but you're not going to be the only one who plays it. I used to play Halo with some frat dudes, roomates, and dormmates in college, and what, 2 of them knew anything at all about the story?

Well I think it's pretty obvious from the multiple gaming boards out there that most people who play the game know about the story are in the majority, how else would they be able to complain about how it doesn't make sense?

Seriously, if you play the games, I don't see how you could not know who the main character is.

I mean, do you know how many EXTREMELY POPULAR things are around that none of us have really heard of? Shittons. The world is a huge place.

I'll never live down when my European friends gave me tons of shit for not knowing who Rafael Nadal was, for example.

No shit, probably because if you join a gaming board in the first place, you're more likely to be into the character and story. I'm not saying that MOST PEOPLE don't know who MC is by name. No shit, the LARGE majority of people know his name. But Halo is SO popular, that even the RELATIVE MINORITY who don't know his name is a shitton of people.

No, you said that there are people who played the games that didn't know.

And Halo is popular all over the goddamn world. A shitton of people know about it and the main character all over the freaking world, and this is thanks to the internet too.

You don't have to play the games to know who he is and what he's the main character of.

There are people who played the games that didn't know. Of course. I'm just saying that no, they're not the majority or anything. I agree there.
