I don't think so.
I think that Lara Croft actually represents something, and is more of an icon than Master Chief could ever hope to be.

I grew up with Tomb Raider/Lara Croft, and most of the people I know have heard of the game too. Or... atleast the movies. And I gotta be honest, I have never heard of Master Chief before o_o

Welcome to Generation Gap-101.

I think you'll end up getting very different answers based on the ages of who answers, and what system they first started playing.

Master Chief is going to eventually be up there with other iconic video game characters. If he isn't one now, which I honestly think he is...he will be. Halo is way too damn popular to exclude him or ignore him.

As of right now, I'd say Lara Croft because she's been around longer and has had much more media exposure. But Master Chief is still popular as well, and will continue to be.

....Unless you've lived under a rock, never read a single gaming magazine/blog, have never ever touched an X-Box or known anyone who's touched an X-Box. :monster:

I still think the general public consists of considerably more nongamers than gamers. And nongamers are more likely to know Lara due to her exposure in more widespread mediums. Now the actual game "Halo" rather than the title of its nameless main character might be more famous than Lara.

....What? That doesn't even make any damn sense. How the hell did Master Chief, sell out, when he's a fucking fictional character of a popular profit driven video game franchise? He sold out the minute you had to pay to play the damn game.

@Forcestealer

I'd say current figures of how many households and young people game would disagree with you. :monster:

I can't believe you people responded to this shit.

And very few people give a shit about Tomb Raider in gaming like they used to. She isn't much of an icon anymore simply because of her mediocre games.

Master Chief is obviously more famous given that his games have reached a much larger audience than Tomb Raider, and he's beloved by millions of screaming teens and kids, and even adults. It's bizarre that he has that kind of clout given his lack of a personality past stoic soldier.

Anytime you see comments about what's big in gaming and shit, you hardly ever hear anything about Croft.

Lara Croft is a bit of an archetype, and is both referenced and parodied in general culture, for a recent example, the latest Doc Who special.

But Samus, who is who both Lara and Chief aspire to be, is more awesome.

Possibly less strictly known, but still better.

Also, due to a hilarious typo, I must now insist his name is Master Chef and he is actually Ship's cook. His ingredients just happen to be Aliens and robots and such.

But we're talking about more than in gaming. I don't think I know a single non-gamer who would have any idea who Master Chief is. So I guess the argument comes down to whether or not gamers outnumber non-gamers.

Yeah, Lara has kinda fallen from grace sadly. But her first few games were pretty awesome and successful in her heyday and considering her memorable character I doubt she'd be forgotten.

Anyways, in regards to how many people in the US are gamers. Here's a nifty poll on the subject.

Now that's just in the US. Imagine what those figures would be...in Japan. I definitely think those who don't game are in the minority now.

And if you don't know who Samus Aran is by now, you should hang yourself with your controller. Or shove it down your throat if its wireless. :awesome:

Okay, but how many of those are just Wii-gamers who I would argue are no more knowledgeable about Master Chief than any nongamer.

And Japan doesn't care about either one of these western characters ^_^

Mako, I was just mixing a serious statement, that Chief has far too many similarities with the far more badass Doom Marine, with a joke, the selling out bit since Chief is more famous than Doomguy.

But we all know Quake is the best FPS possible.

Anyway, Dacon, it's not all about game sales. If records are all that matters, than Chief is more well-known than Pacman. If importance to gaming today is all that matters, than Chief is bigger than Sonic who hasn't ha d a good game in about ten years.

And "Halo" is probably better know than "Master Chief," he doesn't even have a name, after all
Actually, he does :awesome: It's John. iirc.

I didn't say anything about game sales. If you play games as a hobby, and surf the web regarding them, then 9 time out of 10 you know who Master Chief is.

Yes, it is! Master Chief Petty Officer John 117! :awesome:

Actually, according to Gamespot, Halo 3 topped game sales in Japan for a bit...

Additionally, Halo 3 sales made news worldwide with the midnight queues (the same way Harry Potter sales did)... And even in my tiny, mostly non-gaming country, some mention was made that news of the Master Chief's fate was contributing to the madness.

The last Tomb Raider game didn't elicit that kind of response, unless I was narcoleptic that week and missed the news... So perhaps it's fair to say that maybe now at least a few more non-gamers know about the MC.

(Btw, my family, who hates games, knows about the Master Chief but not Lara Croft. But that might be because they've seen his poster in my bedroom. ^_^" )

With gamers over 13 who are not douche bags. Laura is more famous.

With little dipshits on X-Box live.....

Halo has a massive audience with 17 years olds to people in their twenties. This is not a valid statement.

I see where you're going with this. A lot of people do know what Halo is but have no idea who the main character is.

And yes, before anyone asks, it's very possible for that to happen.

Halo has a massive audience with 6 year olds to people in their thirties. This is not a valid statement.

Fixed.

Then you obviously haven't played X-Box live.

I'm sorry, you want my gamertag?

I have played Halo with 40 year old men to 18 year olds, to 30 year old women, on a regular basis.

People encounter children often and they assume this is all there is to it, but it isn't.
