I believe the word for "love" used in the Japanese here is "koi" which already puts their relationship in a pretty romantic light. So "platonic love" here would be more in line with a "platonic romance", as in Zack and Aerith shared a romance that was not sexual (yet).

Well, C/A is the pinnacle of romance despite Cloud beating Aerith's face in, almost chopping her in two, and despite him living with and saying that it's another woman he wants to be with always. So saying Zack and Cissnei are potential lovers like that is at least being consistent.
