Star Wars Rebels

vaderSW1

Dark Knight of the Red Wings

I respected Filoni so much already and now I respect him even more. What an awesome move to bring Thrawn in and even to consult with Timothy Zahn first. Plus we're getting a new Thrawn book from Zahn! Kick ass!

I love how he dealt with the Mara Jade question. It seems like a lot of folks that work with Star Wars on canon things have a similar reaction to people bringing her up. In one way it is sort of disappointing. The reason why people ask about her is because she is very much beloved by the fans. She was a HUGE part of the Star Wars EU. I hope she gets to appear in some kind of official capacity at some point in the new canon.

Still pleased about the YT-2400, and that Thrawn is getting a novel. Also- Tom Baker is our Grey Force User? How is this so amazing?!

So let me start by saying that I watched the Clone Wars when it was airing, but haven't been paying attention to Rebels all too much.

I found the season 3 trailer on YouTube and decided to watch it.

Without spoilers it looks like I need to do some serious catching up now as watching this is a must for me.

Rebels is AWESOME. Season 2 is at or above Clone Wars at its best, and Season 3 looks like it's gonna blow that away. I look forward to your thoughts/reactions/etc.

I cared absolutely nothing about Rebels.

Was always a bigger EU fan than a movie fan, so the scrapping of the EU just ruined the movie for me, and I just kind of lost interest in the franchise.

But then.....!

THRAWN IS BACK
THRAWN IS BACK
THRAWN IS BACK

See? To me, loving the EU but not caring about Rebels makes absolutely no sense.

Personally, I grew up with the Expanded Universe stuff, but I was more than happy to get rid of all of the terrible shit that spiraled out from it over time and start fresh with Episode VII – even if it meant losing some of the awesome things with it.

My love of EU stuff is also a big part of WHY I've been following Clone Wars and Rebels so closely, because they've done Star Wars Expanded Universe stuff so damn well, and Rebels built off of what Clone Wars established to do some AMAZING stuff and has been slowly bringing in Legends stuff and (imo) it's SOOOO much better this way.

tl;dr – You need to watch Clone Wars & Rebels. They're the best.

Not even remotely trying to imply that I'm being rational about this. :P

The movie caused something I love to end, therefore, I take out my frustration on anything that occurs as a result of the movie.

That being said, I will be checking out that Thrawn book. Because all hail our glorious Chiss overlord.

Also, I disliked the Clone Wars show even before all the new canon stuff. Mostly for fucking up the timeline for two of the really, really good novels (Shatterpoint and Dark Rendezvous), and because I'm not a fan of the artstyle, or Darth Maul in general.

I did, however, really like the Clone Wars shorts that used to be on Cartoon Network. :)

Honestly – you're majorly missing out if you're a fan of the Star Wars universe stuff more than the movies. You should at least give it a chance.

Also, for all the good things that got lost, it also purged things that got woefully out of hand, like the Yuuzhan Vong, and all the other less-than-stellar content from the EU as well. The did it in a way to let them reintroduce good parts bit-by-bit like Thrawn along with other really awesome canon into something that's far more solid than what came before even if it's different.

I like to think of Legends as being a rough draft for the current Canon in the same way that the Darth Maul Infinities story was a draft for the Canon events of Maul's return, or the way that Genndy's 2D Clone Wars set up for the main Clone Wars series.

Also - how far into Clone Wars did you get?

While I appreciate the effort you're making, like I said, I'm not rational about this. I despise everything the post Crucible EU stands for with the blazing hot intensity of a thousand suns. My relationship with Disney's Star Wars is like that of a father watching his son get snatched away by an evil ex-wife, and yes, I realize that is ridiculous, and I don't care, because it keeps me from being ridiculously intolerant about something that actually matters. All my negative post adolescent emotions are pointed at one place, where they can do no real harm, as it were. :P

And I liked the New Jedi Order. Nothing wrong with the Vong. What came after, though.......

Anyway, only the fact that it is Thrawn, and that Zahn is writing the book, is what is keeping me remotely interested in this. Until that comes out, Imma go back to quoting Matthew Stover's RotS novel.

"This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker, forever:
The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain.
The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew upon your flesh.
You can hear yourself breathing. It comes hard, and harsh, and it scrapes nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You can never stop it. You cannot even slow it down.
You don’t even have lungs anymore.

You open your scorched-pale eyes; optical sensors integrate light and shadow into a hideous simulacrum of the world around you.
Or perhaps the simulacrum is perfect, and it is the world that it hideous.

You remember the dragon that brought Vader forth from your heart to slay. You remember the cold venom in Vader’s blood. You remember the furnace of Vader’s fury, and the black hatred of seizing her throat to silence her lying mouth -
And there is one blazing moment in which you finally understand that there was no dragon. That there was no Vader. That there was only you. Only Anakin Skywalker.

You killed her.
You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself…
It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith -
Because now your self is all you will ever have.

In the end, the shadow is all you have left.
Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself -
And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame.
This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker.
Forever…"

I am Vader, the EU is Padme, and Disney is Palpatine, and holds Marvel, which is my other great fictional love. So I'll spend my time hunting down Jedi (meaning, silently bashing the new stuff in my head.)

Well... If you're knowingly accepting that it's an irrational reaction, aren't you just screwing yourself out of enjoying some REALLY damn good Star Wars stories – that contain characters like Thrawn that you already like – all for a reason that you already know makes no solid sense...? (Also, if you're intolerant about something that matters, you can actually put your burning rage of a thousand suns to good use rather than let it rob you of a good time). #JustSayin

:awesomonster:

tl;dr – Your irrational reaction makes you miss out on something you'd very clearly enjoy and that makes me sad for you.

In the words of Anakin Skywalker...
"You are expecting me to be rational. This is something I cannot do."

I still have all my books and games and comics. I have nearly the complete Legends EU in my basement bedroom, and I've experienced maybe a quarter of it. I have more than enough entertainment to keep me busy for years, if I so choose. I have no need to devote my time and energy in support of a company that made a decision that I profoundly disagree with on an insurmountable level.

I'm in a similar boat with Marvel, at the moment, without all the rage, lol. Secret Wars was a good jumping off point, and while I may jump back in later, I'm content with that as an ending to "my" era of Marvel. For now, anyway.

Don't feel sad, because I most assuredly don't. In the end, this is all just entertainment. Something to distract us from the monotony and general shittiness of the world around us. And I have more than enough to keep me entertained, even as I futilely engage in a self-imposed boycott on any Star Wars stuff to occur after 2014.

I'm really wondering if the things on Mortis with Father, Sister, & Brother set the stage for the introduction of The Bendu as the middleground between the Jedi and the Sith. I'm really hoping that that becomes an official in-universe term for the Grey Force User path that we've seen Ahsoka somewhat follow, and could potentially be the Path that Kanan sets Ezra down, since, "Once something is known, it cannot be unknown."

Even looking at Father's design, the old wizened beard, with the notably blue hue in his eyes does bear a loose resemblance to The Bendu.
