Avatar: The Last Airbender & Korra (SPOILERS)

Did anybody know the premier was last week? Nick is a dick and advertised Korra only for a week before airing it. Ratings were very low (1.5 million) because of this.

BTW Episodes 1-3 was AWESOME I mean it has good writing and an interesting direction so far. There's no episodes this week because of the holiday but every week there would be two episodes and gawd I don't know why Nick treats this series so badly.

I did know they were last week and watched them. I was very far from excited about the new season and the three episodes didn't do a whole lot to change that.

It had improvements in some areas, interesting villains, Zuko, less wasting of time like the first half of last season was, Korrasami scenes and the storyline about recruiting
airbenders.

But then there was some of the same crap, pacing issues, whatever they're doing with the President, the Earth Queen, Lin's grand total of 5 seconds of screentime even though this season is supposedly going to give her a lot more focus.

@Avec, yep they weren't posting it online and it's off I-Tunes for now :<

@Melon Lord

About Lin Beifong, if you want her I'll just say from what I know because of the leaks you'll see more of her.
There would be at least one episode about her relationship with her family.

I haven't seen any of the new season, though I was intrigued by the trailer when I saw it. I was hoping they would be releasing the episodes online as well like they did last season, but the last time I looked, it didn't seem like they were.

At first I was reluctant that it was a beat em up, but after a while it looks good like Revengence. I was expecting vs battles, but I'm sure they will be in there at some point.

I'm really happy with Book 3 so far and so far I think the Stakeout is the "eve" of the finale.

About Zaheer
I really like it that we finally have a morally questionable airbender because one of my complaints in ATLA is that the nomads seem too good.

Someone in the Avatar forums pointed out the negative side of elements:

Firebender -> can be destructive, imperialist
Waterbender -> bears grudges, unforgiving, traditional
Earthbender -> stubborn, oppressive, resists change
Airbender -> anarchist or nihilist

Poked my head in with this episode, but I will start the season for real shortly

Zaheer = Letho?

I'm not sure if people in this forum still hate the live action adaptation (The Last Airbender) as much as I do now but a crew member recently posted in the forums the reason why the movie was shit:

Production wrapped 5 years ago so I don't think Paramount is going to care. They know it bombed.

What it came down to was M Night really was the only one who knew the show and what he was doing (the first draft of the screenplay? gorgeous. hence Bryke giving him the okay). The producers, who are actually in charge of at least 80% of production including casting.... not so much. They clearly never bothered to watch the show, nor had the ghostwriter who did the final screenplay.

Nicola was hired because she's the daughter of someone one of the producers owed a favor to as Hollywood loves its nepotism. (Her audition tape was subpar at best). In having to cast her they had to cast a guy who could pass as her brother - hence Jackson. His audition was actually pretty good. He's a funny guy and had clearly seen the show. Too bad the producers felt the movie didn't have time for intentional humor and cut all that out of the script. Noah was the only one who honestly openly auditioned and was chosen based on talent. He just needed extra help acting because with a lot of it being green screened he was talking to air a lot of the time. Experienced adults have a hard time doing that let alone a kid.

If you recall they initially signed on Jesse McCartney as Zuko. Why? Because otherwise the lead actor roster would be "starring: two unknown kids you never heard of and that guy who played a minor character in Twilight!". And then someone with a brain realized "wait a minute this show is kind of anime-esque and we're hiring a bunch of white kids. Um.". So what did they do? Because they couldn't can Nicola without someone being really ticked, Jesse willingly bowed out and went with another project offered at the time. Even still, they still needed a big name to draw people in but it couldn't be another white kid. Dev Patel just gave an Oscar-winning performance and was willing to sign on. And in getting him they had to make the rest of the Fire Nation match. Which is why it turned into heroic white kids VS evil brown people (which was intentionally unintentional).

And then it was horribly budgeted. The opening at the SWT all nice and pretty in Greenland? Cost big bucks. And then they realized with a story about people manipulating elements that couldn't be believably done with in camera practical effects. So they had to rebudget and gave most of the money to ILM for post production. You go from the beautiful SWT to everything looking dingy because everything else was shot in Pennsylvania. The Fire Nation Royal Palace? An old high school in Philadelphia. Parts of the Earth Kingdom (including Kyoshi Island which got cut)? Reading, PA. And everything that was the NWT.... some sets built in front of giant green screens in an old emptied aircraft hangar in the outskirts of Philadelphia. Yeah.

And ILM was rushed despite most of the movie's look being left up to them. And you had novice directors hired by producers to oversee that process. That's how come the pebble dance happened. Sadly at that point M Night was just tired of arguing with the overheads, gave up, and collected his paycheck. If you look at the movie's premiere and red carpet footage you can tell his excitement and happiness is fake. Bryke had little say in the film despite being listed as executive producers. That title was a fancy way of saying that they created the show it was based on and they're still alive so they need some kind of nice credit. The actual producers didn't know what they were dealing with and were only interested in a quick buck. Bryke and M Night gave up on the film around the same time for same reasons. The other people working on the film were a pain to deal with and Nickelodeon themselves only wanted the final product as quickly as possible and the money it would presumably make them.

At least they hired good caterers. The food was great on that set.

Just sharing... now I feel bad for hating Shymalan and not hating Paramount enough.

Anyway about Long Live the Queen... I think that's the true reason Book 3 is taken off air, that's dark and cruel.

Season watched in full. It was very good. I felt Zaheer did some interesting, crazy things, but also made quite a few goof-ups. But with that, Red Lotus threat unlocked in Korra's list of people that don't like her existing. I imagine she has quite a bit next season to spiral her into a deep depression.

I guess they're trying to phase out the Avatar concept? You have the radicals on one side, but also the everyday people that are relying on their own abilities through numbers.

Last thought: how to you deal with a Combustion Bender? Why, skate that Y7 rating of course :monster: I did some research,
I guess a previous combustion bender went out the same way, so ATLAB fans were probably seeing this coming.

Many folks in the Korra forums and tumblr agree that the past three books is kinda pointing out that no matter how ridiculously powerful an Avatar is, the world is changing and she might not be needed anymore.

I definitely loved the finale but it's something that I can't be fully satisfied with until I see the aftermath in Book 4. My satisfaction depends on what it builds up, or not build up.

But seeing Korra like that... makes me really sad.

Watched all the episodes now over three days. EDIT: All the episodes of season three that is.

Mad props to the creators for ending with a PTSD Korra. There's something very genuine about the ending not being entirely happy after the big threat is dealt with. The image of shellshocked Korra haunts me and I feel sad, but man do I respect the creators both for this and for having the balls to kill off the Earth Queen the way they did.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this season. Far more than I expected to, and far more than the whine fest I experienced during the first half of season 2. Much kudos Korra people. Now if only Nickelodeon will stop fucking you about.

I've started to watch ATLA and I think I've passed four or five episodes by now? I like it so far. It's a bit corny, but I think that's the general consensus for anime because it's Japanese? I don't watch an awful lot, so you can consider me a newbie in that respect. The story is interesting and all the three seasons are on Netflix, so I'll be able to catch up to you lot soon. :)

Also, Carlie can shut up now I'm watching it. :monster:

It's American actually.

I get what you mean about the cornyness though Ami, it's hard to reconcile with that aspect of the show. In that respect it improves and there are a lot of mature topics handled by the later episodes - for a kid's TV show anyway.
