Sir George Martin, the record producer who worked with the Beatles, among other famous artists, and who had more #1 records in the Billboard Top 100 than any other producer, has died at the age of 90.

As someone who knows a thing or two about the Beatles, I can tell you that Martin had an enormous influence on not only them, but also on pop and rock music as a whole. He was a multiple-Grammy winner, an Oscar-winner, part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and from what I've heard, including directly from people who knew him, he was a lovely man, a real gentleman. RIP.

(If you've never heard of him before, well, he was probably the reason that the other George Martin has to use the middle initials R.R.)

I swear I literally did not know the Fifth Beatle was still alive until this point. RIP.

On the first day in the studio, Martin lectured the Beatles on their weaknesses, then asked if there was anything they didn't like.

"I don't like your tie," George Harrison reportedly quipped.

lulz :)

Johan Cruijff, (apparently) famous footballer died last thursday, just a day too early to match up with that other JC. Next to a footballer he was also a philosopher, with remarks like "If you don't shoot you can't score", "Sometimes something has to happen before something happens", and "If you can't win, you have to make sure you don't lose". :monster:

I don't listen to country music of any kind, but news of this particular death has been blowing up on my Twitter feed over the last 24 hours, primary from guitar publications such as Guitar World.

Country singer Merle Haggard at age 79.

Amber Rayne, porn star, 31. Circumstances of death not yet entirely clear.

I'm willing to bet it's drugs. The porn community already lost Tera Wray Static (notable in the rock and metal community as the widow of former Static X frontman Wayne Static) earlier this year, and the coroner has already ruled her death a suicide by drugs.

Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was murdered last night in a road rage incident at the age of 34. Smith was drafted 18th overall by the Saints in 2004, and spent his entire NFL career with that team. Notable events during his career include having to play home games in East Rutherford, San Antonio, and Baton Rouge in 2005 as a result of Hurricane Katrina and winning Super Bowl XLIV, but was also involved in controversy. In 2008, he and other defensive players were suspended for testing positive for StarCaps, a supplement that contained a diuretic on the banned substance list due to its reputation as a masking agent for PEDs, but due to a lawsuit in the state of Minnesota filed by Pat and Kevin Williams (no family relation) of the Vikings, it took 3 years for any suspensions to be enforced. In 2012, Smith was implicated in the Bountygate scandal (for which he and 3 other players, 2 assistant coaches, head coach Sean Payton, and general manager Mickey Loomis were initially punished with suspensions ranging from 4 games to the entire season, and the Saints organization was stripped of draft picks; the coaches and GM served their suspensions, but the players' suspensions were overturned on appeal).

The Hollywood Will Smith is still alive though.

You guys just don't understand though how devastating this is for the people of Minnesota.

The Current (local public radio station I listen to) blog post about what was going on this morning before his death was announced.

News post from The Current announcing his death.

Read the comments sections on both of those.

The Current is also playing Prince music probably all day, with periodic cut-ins from MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) discussing prince and taking listener calls.

News article from MPR

Link to listen to MPR if you just want to hear the talk with no music.

News report from WCCO

News report from Kare11

KSTP news

Prince was from here. Not only that, but he stayed here. He live here. He operated here. He had his music studio here. He would be seen about town going to local events and even giving surprise concerts at local venues where he would play until the cops shut everything down.

He was the fucking hometown hero.

Currently listening to the callers on the radio, people are fucking devastated by this. :sadpanda:

Even at my office, one of my coworkers was like, "Prince is dead!" And everyone shot up from their seats.

I stopped following wrestling after the Owen Hart tragedy, but I do know that Chyna's post-WWE life has been a trainwreck...not to mention that she is now the 6th person from Celebrity Rehab to die (which also includes Rodney King, Mike Starr, and Mindy McCready), and the first such death after the show was cancelled, so I'm not surprised to hear about her death. Even if she was totally sober, or if any drugs found in her system were too small an amount to OD on, I have reason to believe that she did steroids during her WWE career, because I see absolutely no way the female body can get that muscular without the use of steroids, and if that's the case, then an enlarged heart from past steroid use could be a factor here (and that is sadly a common factor in premature wrestling deaths over the last couple of decades).

Prince, on the other hand, caught me completely by surprise.
