I've decided to PM these to whomever wants to vote for Cloud:

He's already dead, what else are you gonna do to him?

Vivi. Vivi Vivi Vivi. Vivi veni vidi vici. Vivi vi veri universum vivus vici.

Let's all sing a song about Vivi to the tune of the Muppets'

Seriously though? Vivi had about as much thrown at him emotionally as Cloud, but didn't allow it to break him into someone else's pawn. All the FFIX cast pretty much held up better to mental stress than the VII and VIII cast, IMO.
All I'd like to add to the discussion at this point is that I decided which of these two characters to vote for before the poll opened, and I am going to stick with that. I'm not swayed by the "campaigning" that has been taking place in this thread, though I have to say I enjoyed reading it before it got overly serious.
Flint, I don't think anyone seriously would want you to change your mind. Stick your ground, come what may. :)

Although, if you were to do a poll on people's favourite FFIX characters, then we would be having words. :P

The VIII cast is on an entirely different level of mental instability. Cloud at least had an interstellar metamorphic alien messing with his head as an excuse.

Vivi found out his dark unknown origins, Cloud found out his life as he remembered it was a fraud. it ain't the same, and Cloud broke because he had presence in his head actively fighting him for control.

Yes, it would be most interesting ;). Most interesting indeed if Cloud did not win ;). If only people who haven't voted yet, who have the slightest inclination to liking Vivi, would happen to accidentally stumble across this thread ;)... and voted for Vivi ;). What an awesome coincidence that would be and also one that would lead to most interesting circumstances ;).

is this a good time to mention that I have not technically beaten FFIX because my game always freezes when I beat the final boss?

OoOoh!

This poll totally makes me anxious for the results. It's so much more interesting compared to the Aerith/Tifa one where the poll's too brutally one-sided. And to think that Cloud Strife has the possibility of losing in a popularity poll makes me tremble with anticipation.

I have no regrets.

I think that this is the first poll to be really, truly close for this long. Lightning vs. Aerith was close for a time, but then Aerith pulled away near the end and at that point, in the absence of a whole bunch of Lightening fans coming to vote, it was pretty much over. This one though could very easily go either way.

But, yes. This was a good match-up no matter the result. :)

Here's a little bit on Cloud and why I think he's an awesome character:

He starts out as a complete mysterious badass who just waltzes in, kicking ass and taking names. Slowly, you learn that there's a crazy event that happened with his past that personally connects him to the events. As you dig into it deepend, you learn that ShinRa was modifying their SOLDIER with Mako and Jenova Cells, which makes you more cautious about Cloud. Then, as more of the psychotic experimentation comes into the light, there's a whole period of time where you believe that he's nothing but a fabricated construction of a person, just a failed Sephiroth copy with no real family, and just an instrument in Sephiroth's reunion.

He's is pulled out of that lie by the people who love him and know that he's a real person. However during that process, he also loses one of the people he loves because of his powerlessness. As if to accentuate that powerlessness, he also comes to realize that the persona that he'd been taken up was that of his best friend who was slaughtered in front of him, in order to keep him safe from capture - AND that it was just outside of their final destination. You also learn that he's not the powerful SOLDIER warrior you thought that he was, and suddenly the circumstances of the conflict of Sephiroth seem strained, even though Cloud's come to control of himself mentally. Then, in the end, everything that he's become throughout the game is what end up making him powerful enough to succeed, because it comes from the core of his being. Despite everything that's pitted against him on a mental and physical level, he manages to overcome it all against seemingly unbeatable odds, and who both discover and define who he really is.

and then it has to happen again in advent children because square enix thinks fans can't cope with a non-messed up cloud

I didn't say it was the same, just that they had a similar amount of stress thrown at them.

But OK, challenge accepted. Just for fun. :) Let's skip the memory issue, as memory is the trickiest of things under normal circumstances. And, TBH, only part of Cloud's memories were false memories, specifically those about him being a member of SOLDIER. Everything else? He remembered pretty well.

But the presence in his head bit... I accepted that the first couple playthroughs, but a few things started bugging me about it. It's only mentioned/alluded to four times in the game, IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong), and only two of those have any veracity.

#1: when Cloud attacks Aerith at the end of the Temple of the Ancients.
#2: at the Northern Crater in the Nibelheim illusion (by Sephiroth).
#3: by Cloud, just after he regains his senses (IIRC).
#4: end game, final boss (anticlimax).

#1 and #4 are straight up, and pretty much unassailable. (Well, #1 is. #4 could just be Sephiroth latching onto the strongest party member, who will usually be Cloud, gameplay wise.)

#2 -- well, Sephiroth. Sure, the villain wouldn't lie. However, during the Nibelheim illusion, he claimed that Cloud hadn't been at the Nibelheim incident, and hadn't even existed before then. Now, either:
a) he's a lying liar who lies. He's saying what he thinks will manipulate Cloud the easiest.
b) he's misinformed/delusional. After all, he believes a brain-dead alien whose head he cut off is his mother, and "she" is speaking to him.

#3 -- this is the biggest problem. Cloud pretty much dumps the whole game at Sephiroth's feet. He wasn't chasing Sephiroth out of a very human desire to avenge his mother, hometown, and, later, Aerith. Sephiroth was summoning him. If disc one is anything to go by, with the party having to question whole towns, including the other Sephiroth 'clones' to know where Sephiroth was going... Sephiroth is a crap summoner.

So, bluntly, about the only time Sephiroth straight up mind controls Cloud is at the Temple of Ancients. And that itself could just be a form of hypnosis, now I come to think of it.

Actually, forget the whole half-assed theory. Cloud's shown to be susceptible to suggestion, so Sephiroth hypnotised him. After Tifa helped him place his mind together again, he was less susceptible. :awesome:
