Death Stranding -A Hideo Kojima Game-

I think that the most spectacular thing about all this is that the whole shit that went down with Konami and Sony picking him up set Kojima up to be in a really unique position. Not only does he basically have a blank check to make his friends do weird stuff within a game that looks mind-shreddingly gorgeous, but at the same time he's not relegated to test the concept of something that is TOTALLY fucking insane as a smaller indy title like most people/companies would be for something this... out-there.

Every time I see something for this, all I can think of is,
"Literally ONLY Hideo Kojima could or would ever make this."

Like... most other games – even ones that I really love, I can see the possibility of someone trying out something similar on some level if those games had never been made... but the fact that everything about this seems SO off the wall and indiscernible but intriguing is what gets me the most. It's one of those things where if it's properly successful, I can see it making huge waves in the industry for just going in a weird new direction. Like Octo mentioned with the Un Chein Andalou reference, it's like seeing full-blown surrealism in video game format at a time when the rest of the major industry is in a completely different era of art.

(Also, for some reason I'm most curious about the rainbow being upside down in the trailer. It's such a minor little thing, but it's there intentionally and that feels so very different to just about all of the other forms of weirdness on display).

This dude's videos have been really good. Additionally, I wonder about Norman Reedus' scar now, since the umbilical cord seem to play a pretty big role, but he's specifically scarred to be unable to make that connection — and this is a game about connections.

Finally watched the trailer and here comes my (provably) unpopular opinion.

Sooooo, Kojima, you showed us a trailer. Have some nice interesting visuals and presentation and concepts but......
WHERE THE F*** IS THE GAMEPLAY? YOU KNOW, THE THING THAT DEFINES A VIDEOGAME!

That alone (imo) makes this trailer a failure. This would be a good trailer if this was for a movie but, unfortunately this for a videogame.

Kojima you need fix this shit ASAP, you´re making videogames, not movies.

…You DO realize that this trailer was basically the announcement of the engine that they're using to develop the game, right? What degree of gameplay are you expecting to see at this point? Gameplay trailers are best revealed when the existing gameplay at that stage of development matches what the game will actually deliver. Until then, cryptic cinematic trailers are just fine.

The first trailer was a concept, and he was still building up Kojima Productions when it was released. How far along do you really think this game could be by now?

There is obviously a lot of pomp and circumstance at every little development, but this rather unique situation itself kind of warrants it, given the recent history of what's happened.

I'm just speculating but I think the 'gameplay' is gonna be pretty out there. I can't imagine it being straightforward. It wouldn't surprise me if it does end up more like an interactive movie.

The whole thing with the umbilical cords makes me wonder if Kojima will play with restraint. There's been the recent interest in making big open sandbox games that try and make things seem fairly realistic. I think it would be nice to introduce factors that restrain that freedom, and all these tethers seem rather symbolic of something like that. Kojima is the sort of guy who likes to deconstruct games, and the relationship between the game and player, so if there was anyone who would do it, it would be him. Sure, I think he has said that the cords had to do with connectivity, but I think he'll explore the down sides of that, and probably numerous other facets.

He'll have us playing with our toes in an adjoining room looking at the game in a mirror :monster:

hmm, not too sure about this

The team created a restaurant setting and they're working on figuring out who the character played by Reedus meets there, the table they sit at, the dialogue between them, and even the menu they look at.

Like, I get testing different game engines and graphics and even designs and shit, but characters and dialogue? Makes it sound like even Kojima has no idea what the story is going to be about.

I was expecting it to be total batshit, but I'd like to think Kojima knows where it;s going at least. Otherwise it'll end up like Lost with a bunch of weird shit and red herrings over and over :/

It's a very good message and all but, don't we already have games like that?

Which games are ones that you feel meet that qualification.
Additionally, are any of those games like what Death Stranding seems to be?

I feel Undertale does do that which he's talking about in his column, for instance. It's probably the best example. And while I haven't played it, I believe Life is Strange does focus more on connections rather than on conflict.

Not saying those are exactly what Death Stranding is going to be, but I feel saying we haven't reached that type of gaming is not too fair.
