Actually... it wasn't But it wasn't the original 'go talk to a wall' either, it was 'talking to a wall'. So they didn't get it wrong, really.Yeah that's really dumb...it doesn't even make sense. Was the Japanese line ambiguous or something?

Although if they were going to mess something up, maybe they should have started here.
Gamespy writer can kiss mah ass.Final Fantasy VII's Sephiroth is just about the most overrated videogame character in existence. Basically, the dude is a whiny, pissed-off loose cannon who overreacts to the discovery of his test-tube-baby birth (or FF7's magical equivalent, anyway) by trying to destroy the world. Yeah, that's perfectly reasonable. His long hair, dark clothes, and cartoonishly long sword won over legions of gamers easily impressed by generic, effeminate Japanese character designs, and he somehow ascended to the pantheon of arch-videogame-villainy because he killed one of your party members. Never mind the fact that you could use a Phoenix Down to bring dead characters back to life in any other circumstance, but hey, this happened in a cut-scene, so no take-backs.
Except it's true, at least about the generic Japanese character things. Long silver/white hair is practically a staple for Japanese male characters. Sesshiroth just won the Bishonen Powerball Draw and got to be the one everyone remembers.
Because evil clowns are so original, right?
And everyone remembers JoKerfka. He is very popular too.
Except Kefka isn't a rip-off of the Joker, despite what people think. They made that connection on their own, but simple logic (Kefka originated from a Japanese video game, the Joker from American comics) will show that he isn't. Sephiroth, on the other hand, is just another anime villain.
