Sorry, I'm lost in translation. Dim like the light in a poorly lit room or like the light coming through a cloudy sky?
"Not bright" is an alternative way of saying "not smart" via metaphor. Saying someone is "dim" is basically an different way of implementing that metaphor. They're calling Zack stupid.

Don't know the exact origin of the metaphor, but it brings to mind the common visual shorthand for "having an idea" being represented by a lightbulb appearing over someone's head.

Sorry to confuse @Torrie

English isn't the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to ease of access lol.

Aren't all languages like this? One time my GF had to pick her mum up from the school she works at in Mexico City and a cab driver cut her up. She honked, and a cyclist thought she was honking at him. At the lights he started gesturing, she wound the window down and he called her "madre" something or other. Madre means "mother", apparently he was calling her a "fucking bitch" though. I still don't get how this works. He also dropped puta, which was surprising because it was in the business district and he was very well dressed, young working professional type.

So yeah, languages are weird with phrases. At least dim makes a metaphorical sense.

Madre de puta (IIRC), also works in French "sa mère la pute" or "la putain de sa mère" (the latter is less targetted at people rather than in general though) :D Slang is always a best guess for people when it's not their native language ;)

It's not the sharpest crayon in the chandelier, that's a fact.
cab driver cut her up
Another example: I'm pretty sure you want to say "cut her off", i.e. he blocked her movement. Cutting someone up is a much more violent and bloody action. :mon:

Ah, I didn't know French shared this and yeah, madre de puta might have been what he said. When people speak quickly I only tend to hear the words I know well, and they were having a rather heated exchange at the time, so I'm still not sure - other than that he was an overly aggressive potty mouth.
