Eh, I am not surprised he got cut, since in interview the developers did say they would want to avoid the “predatory gay man” stereotype in the Remake. Which regardless of how positive of intentions/benefit you give Mukki’s character, he does still fall into that stereotype at least somewhat no matter what.

I'm curious about the reason for everyone's dresses...

I've figured out Tifa (still went for the original), but I wonder what changes Aerith's (I got the red one) or Cloud's (got a Black-Purple-ish corseted dress) choice...

I'm loving this game so far. It's an incredible love letter to the original. Yes, we've had some odd shenanigans whenever the shadows were involved... but it hasn't been TOO obtrusive (yet?) and I'm okay with most if not all the changes so far.

I think the crossdressing section is a bit less iconic than the original but still good. Onwards I go!

I haven't finished with Chapter 9 yet (I stopped tonight after dropping Aerith off with Madam M to have her dress fitted) but I think if anything influences Aerith's dress it'll be the price you paid to Madam M for the hand massage? Either that or how well you did in the coliseum, but I'm assuming you have to beat them all there anyway so I'm not sure how that could influence it.

I'm more interested in Cloud's dress up options tbh but the characters haven't even floated that as an idea yet lol. There's a dude needing the toilet and a pharmacy so even if that part of the OG doesn't make it in the attention to detail with the references are on point, even down to the materia shop dude and inn crier :monster:

I read on another thread that Aerith's dress depended on how many side quests you'd do on ch7 (I think?) while Tifa's dress is how many side quests you'd do on ch3. TBH I don't like Aerith's red dress much, I prefer her on one of the cuter pink dresses that you can get, but I'm not sure on how to get that once I'll be there (though I'll look it up by then there will be plenty of explanations lmao).

Yeah I'm fairly certain Tifa's dress depends on the Alone at Last event you get for completing all the Chapter 3 sidequests. Tifa asks Cloud to go out for a night on the town at some point and asks what kind of dress she should wear. You get 3 options and the one I went for (something exotic) certainly matched what she was wearing in Wall Market (a sexy kimono thing).

As for Aerith and Cloud, presumably the massage choice for the former and how many people you manage to help out in the clothes shop owner quest for the latter?

This chapter is absolutely amazing. Just finished it and I loved everything. The long way to the Wall Market with the cool new music, the silly bandits with the awesome version of Oppressed People, the playground, Wall Market itself, the Colosseum (Hell House appearing was so hype), the motherfucking Honey Bee Inn with the hilarious dance mini game, the massage... I could go on. I was smiling almost the whole time.

It even had the gun on the ceiling in the weird shop!! Also, check out the other waiting room in the Colosseum after each fight. It was so funny when I saw the trashed robots from Chocobo Sam after the fight. :D
Don Corneo is also perfect. And I loved when Tifa and Aerith teamed up to get to Cloud.

The only thing I didn't like so much was the new Wall Market theme, as @Tetsujin already said. Not really memorable and it felt like a pretty short loop. Other than that... PERFECTION.

I got Aerith's and Tifa's trailer dresses and Cloud in a very pretty corset one. I wonder if there are different wigs because the pink bow one doesn't match the dress and it's the only part I don't like :P

Haven't finished the chapter yet, just met up with Tifa. Didn't want to miss anything of what's to come due to being too tired.

Also I've got that new version of the oppressed stuck in my head and by that I mean just the part were it goes do do doooooo :closedmonster:

I'm keeping a log of my thoughts after each chapter. Here's Chapter 9!
  • As Cloud watched Aerith walk away, he received an emotional surge. So strong that he shed a tear. The moment was further pronounced by the music, which featured the first few notes of FF7's opening. I captured a video clip and rewatched it a few times, then thought long and hard about what it all means. I think I sorted some things out. The Guardians are not giving Cloud visions of the future, they are giving Cloud visions of a parallel universe. The universe of the original game. Somehow the remake's timeline is deviating, but there are certain events that cannot be changed, hence the Guardians appear (i.e. fate, i.e. the player's expectations) to correct the course. I have not seen the remake's final trailer and am avoiding story discussion. My brain is processing everything whenever I'm not playing. It's a bit exhausting!
  • I remember when this site was so happy to see the robot hand from the collapsed highway in the remake's concept art. Well now we have three whole puzzles centered around it! And they're... okay. I found the puzzles were tedious due to the slow animations
  • The battle music throughout the collapsed highway is my jam. I put on headphones for the first time since starting the remake just to listen more closely. So far my favorite tracks have been the brand new ones
  • The park scene is important to me. Again, one of my favorite bits of foreshadowing in the original. I think it made the conversion okay. Aerith seemed to mouth the words "Zack Fair". And, of course, I played on the park equipment before heading out
  • I was happy to see that all the NPCs involved with the original's optional Wall Market quests are still present in the remake
  • Crazy that both Kotch and Scotch are given expanded roles. Hilarious roles at that. The whole coliseum sequence is brilliant. And I'd be remiss not to mention...
  • HELL HOUSE. Shoots flaming chairs out of its chimney. It flies. It eats people. By far the best glow up in the remake
  • I like how the remake handles Jules. Jules is never the butt of a joke and everybody respects them. Good stuff. Also, does anyone know Jules' preferred pronoun?
  • WOAH. That Honey Bee Inn dance minigame. Too much for words. I love it. Whatever wild thing happens with this remake, I'll try to remember Hell House and the dance minigame. It will get me through

Thinking about it further (and having watched the scene again), I actually think Cloud crying might be a reference to Aerith leaving to perform Holy and eventually, her death.

That was my initial interpretation, there's a ton of foreshadowing in this game that I wasn't expecting. I'm curious and excited to see where it all goes in the end.

The Wall Market theme in the tunnel was fantastic, I'm loving the new soundtrack in general but that's a highlight for me. Also some of Cloud's lines/scenes are absolute comedy gold, especially with Madam M and in Corneo's mansion! I'm seriously impressed by Cloud's VA.

I've just realised I never found a use for the crazy shop with the machine gun, I forgot about it as I was running around after Johnny. Anyone find they could use it or is it just a nice nod to the original?

Okay, literally just started this Chapter. I've had this conspiracy theory for years that in the original game, you were going to have to use the crane to pick up the iron bar from the hand and place it down so you could progress, but they cut it out because it would have been tedious. They have a similar scene with the big hand here in the remake, so I'm thinking I'm right.

Omg... The fact you've essentially caught up to me, and I had a two-day head start on you scares me. :monster:

What the hell, you're like powering through this game like whoa.

Is it about the Chapter 18 Thread, Ody? You really want to discuss the ending huh

No I'm just still mad people had over a weeks head start on me. That said, I do want to know what the monster that's lurking at the end of the game is. You guys sure won't shut up about it lol. I'm having enough fun paling around with Johnny right now though, no rush.

I usually save posting my impressions for one post.

But.

Holy-muthafuckin'-shit.

That Hell House was a monster. That fight was intense as hell, and no calling it a boss-battle doesn't do it justice. That felt like an optional superboss.

Every battle in this game commands a level of respect, awareness and prep that just demands your full attention and it's incredible.

But that fight pushed me to the limits. Oh my God. The spectacle. The intensity. The thing's sheer tenacity and refusal to just fucking DROP IT'S GUARD AND DIE. That thing was Hell, indeed. This entire arc so far has been phenomenal. The new characters are fucking amazing and the battles feel legendary. A fucking house-shaped weapon that torments you with neverending salvos of chairs, plush-toy bombs, and roof tiles before violently careening into you while it launches itself at you with a fucking rocket engine is the stuff you can't explain verbally... It must be seen.. and felt.

This entire arc is a fucking full course gourmet meal.

EDIT: One thing I want to add, and this is sorta late to be saying however it's exemplified in this fight.

Do not be afraid to use ATB and always be building it up. Do not be afraid to attack, even when it's just chip damage.

You can't be hoarding ATB because you will die. Don't wait til it's at 2 bars unless you need to spend it for a 2 bar skill. But you need to switch, use commands, attack, and keep going. Pressure must be consistent. Even when you're getting your face kicked in.

Aerith is good but bless her heart she definitely exemplifies a mage character. Had to revive her like 4 times this fight, and i know she limit broke 6 times. Like she was vital but you really can't expect her to handle herself and tank, so in order to build up ATB to heal, you gotta keep attacking. Even when you're afraid one hit will kill you. Don't stop. Keep attacking. The game was surprisingly lenient when you just are chipping away at an enemy. Don't run, just fight.

Steadfast Block is a fucking godsend too. That shit needs to be on everybody.

Okay, I gotta say what I'm thinking before I fight Aps.

Square knew how high expectations were for this remake, that much is clear. Chapter's 1 to 8 are all extremely well made, full of love and care. But chapter 9, chapter fucking 9, Jesus Christ! They blew it out of the water in every way imaginable! Every last moment of wall market is full of so much life and energy, its the first time this world felt completely real to me! I cannot believe the level of quality they achieved here. Cloud's clear discomfort, his hesitation towards the whole thing, it was so real. The way they elevated Johnny from a small cameo to a full on actor in the Wall Market story was amazing, and how they used him to tie together all the side-questing from the original was great! And like Mako is saying, the Colleseum was phenomenal! Fuck, I wish I was better at putting my feelings to words like some of you are. This chapter shows exactly how much square understood the anitcipation for this part of the game, it is absolutely...

Perfection.

Also apparently I'm amazing at rhythm games, I did nearly perfectly with the dance performance and got what I assume is Cloud's best dress and the ear rings.

What determines Aerith and Tifa's dresses btw? Aerith was the same as the trailer, but Tifa was in this white leopard patter dress with Chun-Li hair. Fuck this game is good.

Just got Cloud's level 2 limit break Climhazzard Ascension.

Don't sleep on Punisher Mode. Cannot overstate how fucking awesome and useful that mode is. It's so great for crowds that want to get up and personal.

Gonna try and get Aerith's now, but I imagine that one might be harder :monster:

EDIT: Disregard, Aerith fucking killed it. Just some Barrier materia and Cure, and she handled herself well. Who knew :monster:

Drunk Planet Theorist: Shh, listenin' time okay? I'm tellin' ya. Mako? Shit's bad for the planet.
Friend: Don't start. You're gonna ruin the night...
Drunk Planet Theorist: HEY, this is serious shit!!!!
Friend: Didn't the doctor tell you 'lay off the booze?' Worry about your own health instead of the planet's...
Drunk Planet Theorist: Yeah, that's a good point but, counterpoint. I love drinking...
Friend: You could say that liquor's your mako....

This is NPC dialogue at the bar is so fucking hilarious and on brand, it just perfectly sumates Wall Market and Midgar in general. I love this fucking chapter.

You know, in their character bios it was said that the wall market trio all wanted to take Corneo down a peg, and that's why they help Cloud. While that is sort of a part of their characters, its not really as explicit as I thought it would be. I was imagining some big multi-tiered scheme to take down Corneo, but it really isn't. Cloud's just some bad dude who wanted to mess with the don and everybody just kinda went with it because they were all a little annoyed with Corn man.

Also, RIP Mukki. Coulda at least named one of the body builders in the gym after him.
